The Alpha Who Knew

770 Words
Evelyn couldn't move. The words echoed through her mind. The last female Alpha. Royal bloodline. It couldn't be true. Her entire life, she'd been told she was ordinary. Weak, even. She had never been the strongest wolf in Blackthorn. She had never displayed the abilities that other young wolves discovered after their first transformation. And now Kael Draven was standing in front of her, looking at her as though she had suddenly become someone entirely different. “You're lying,” Evelyn said. Kael didn't answer. “You're lying!” she repeated, louder this time. “If I wanted to lie to you, I would have told you something easier to believe.” Evelyn stared at him. Behind Kael, the wolves who had been pursuing her remained strangely still. None of them dared move. “Why are they kneeling?” Kael glanced at them. “Because your blood commands respect.” “My blood?” “Royal Alpha blood.” Evelyn shook her head. “My father was the Alpha of Blackthorn.” “Yes.” “He wasn't royalty.” Kael's expression darkened. “That's what everyone was supposed to believe.” Evelyn's chest tightened. “What aren't you telling me?” Before Kael could answer, a howl erupted from the trees. This one was different. Deep. Powerful. The wolves around them immediately lowered their heads. Kael's eyes narrowed. “They're coming.” “Who?” “The King's hunters.” Evelyn's stomach dropped. “The King?” Kael grabbed her wrist. “We have to move.” She pulled away. “Don't touch me.” “We don't have time for this.” “I want answers!” “And you'll get them if you stay alive long enough to hear them.” Another howl echoed through the forest. Closer this time. Kael turned toward the northern path. “Follow me.” Evelyn hesitated. Every instinct told her not to trust him. But another part of her remembered her father's letter. *Trust the man who brings you this message.* She followed. They ran through the forest. Kael moved quickly, but he slowed whenever Evelyn fell behind. After several minutes, Evelyn noticed something strange. They were no longer being followed. She looked over her shoulder. “Where did they go?” “They're afraid.” “Of you?” Kael looked at her. “Not me.” His eyes dropped to her glowing wrist. “Of you.” Evelyn looked down. The golden mark was still there. It pulsed softly beneath her skin. “What does it mean?” “It means the royal blood has awakened.” “Why now?” “Because your father is dead.” Evelyn stopped. Kael stopped too. She stared at him. “You said you didn't know where my father was.” “I didn't.” “Then how do you know he's dead?” Kael was silent. Evelyn's anger rose. “You knew!” “I suspected.” “You were there.” “No.” “Then who was?” Kael looked away. “That is what we need to find out.” Evelyn stepped closer. “You knew my father before tonight.” “Yes.” “How?” “He saved my life.” That answer caught her off guard. Kael continued. “Years ago, your father came to my territory. He was wounded. Someone was hunting him.” “Who?” “The same people who are hunting you now.” Evelyn's heart sank. “My father was running from them?” “Yes.” “Why?” Kael's expression became guarded. “Because he knew the royal family had been betrayed.” Evelyn frowned. “What royal family?” Kael looked directly at her. “Your family.” A cold sensation traveled through Evelyn. She wanted to deny everything. But the mark on her wrist continued glowing. Her wolf whispered inside her mind. *He is telling the truth.* Evelyn swallowed. “Who was my mother?” Kael's expression changed. For the first time, he looked genuinely uncomfortable. “You don't know?” “My father never talked about her.” Kael looked toward the mountains. “Your mother was Princess Elara.” Evelyn's breath caught. “Princess?” Kael nodded. “She was the heir to the Moon Throne.” The world seemed to tilt beneath Evelyn's feet. “My mother was a princess?” “Yes.” “Then why did she disappear?” Kael didn't answer immediately. Evelyn's voice trembled. “Kael.” “She was murdered.” Evelyn went still. “What?” “
