CHAPTER TENEach morning the great city was born afresh every day was like the start of a new world. Central Park was divided by curtains of sunlight stretching across Fifth from between the tall buildings. Heading north, Ash passed from warm sunlight through cool shadow and into sunlight again. He could feel the change in temperature through his jogging suit. The early morning air was cool and sweet. This was the first chance he’d had to jog since last Friday. He never bothered on weekends. Only three weekdays—Monday, Wednesday and Friday—but this past Monday he’d overslept after his late supper with Mara at the Russian Tea Room. He wondered if Marnat was asleep this morning. After staying awake all night and planning what he would do with that ten thousand bucks. Only a few joggers
