Satisfied with himself and his decision, Dorian slid behind the wheel. He couldn’t wait to see her. The question gnawed at him—how had she done on the exam, and had Bert kept his promise? He dialed her number, but instead of the familiar ring, an automated voice told him the phone was switched off or out of service. A wave of unease swept through him, but his pragmatic mind quickly countered it. He tried again—same result. Next, he called Sam. “Yeah,” Sam answered. “Where’s Clara?” Dorian asked. “She’s still at college, caught up in a talk with her professor.” “Why isn’t she picking up?” “Maybe she turned it off.
