🌕 Chapter 15: The Echo and the Oath

738 Words
The path to Emberreach was carved through red rock and thorned woods. It was the last outpost before the Hollow's border — a rebel sanctuary buried under illusion of magic and raw flame power. Kaira’s palm-runes still glowed faintly beneath her gloves. Her body ached from the trial, but something inside her had settled. She felt... whole. Riven walked beside her in silence, eyes always scanning. He hadn’t touched her much since the kiss, but the way he looked at her — like she was the center of gravity — said enough. “You’re too quiet,” she said. “I’m thinking.” “About?” “How long can I keep others from falling in love with you?” She flushed. “Is that a threat?” He looked over, a rare grin tugging at his lips. “A warning.” --- 🔥 Emberreach The rebel camp shimmered into view like a mirage — flickering heatwalls cloaked the entrance. Lava channels curved around tents and stone walkways, powered by old Flamekeeper tech. They were barely through the gate when a voice rang out from the upper terrace: “Well, well. The Wolf returns.” Kaira turned just as a tall man dropped from a ledge — fire trailing from his boots. He landed smoothly in front of them. Ashen Vale. Hair jet-black, eyes burning copper, and a smirk that belonged to someone used to being both worshiped and wanted. He wore a red coat with a dagger at each hip, and flame tattoos spiraling over his arms. “You didn’t tell me you were traveling with a goddess,” Ashen said, eyes locking onto Kaira like she was a puzzle he planned to solve. “Don’t,” Riven warned under his breath. Ashen extended a hand to Kaira. “Name’s Ashen Vale. Captain of Emberreach. Keeper of bad decisions. I’ve heard stories about you.” “All true,” she said, shaking his hand with a smirk. “Especially the dangerous ones.” “I hoped so.” His smile widened. Riven stepped between them, not quite subtly. “We didn’t come to flirt, Ash.” “Speak for yourself, Brother Wolf,” Ashen said, winking at Kaira. --- ⚔️ The Friction Later that evening, during the council fire, Kaira stood with Riven on one side… and Ashen on the other. The tension was thick as melted steel. Ashen casually leaned closer. “You know,” he said softly, “I get why he’s brooding. I used to be the same. But you? You’re not a creature meant for chains and cold silences. You deserve someone who burns with you.” Kaira looked at him, amused. “You always talk like that?” “Only when the fire’s mutual.” She didn’t respond. But Riven noticed. His jaw clenched. --- 💥 The Test When the council asked for volunteers to scout the Hollow’s outer ridge, both Riven and Ashen stood. “I’ll go,” Riven said. “She’s not going without me,” Ashen added, gesturing to Kaira. “You don’t speak for me,” she said firmly. Both men looked at her. She stepped forward. “I’ll go. And I’ll choose who comes with me.” The council waited. Kaira looked between them — the calm fury in Riven’s eyes, the confident spark in Ashen’s. Two kinds of fire. But only one felt like home. “Riven comes,” she said. “I fight better when I’m with someone who knows me.” The moment was quiet. Ashen lifted his hands, mocking surrender. “No hard feelings.” But his smirk faded just slightly. --- 🐺 That Night By the edge of the firelight, Riven sat sharpening his blade. Kaira approached slowly, dropping beside him. “You jealous?” she teased. “Should I be?” “Maybe,” she said. “You never called me a goddess.” He looked at her, eyes glowing silver in the dark. “Because I don’t worship you, Kaira,” he murmured. “I walk beside you.” That silenced her more than anything ever had. “I’m not trying to own you. I’m just… afraid of losing what we are.” “You won’t,” she whispered. “I chose you, In front of them all. And I’ll choose you again.” They didn’t kiss this time. They didn’t need to. Their silence burned brighter than any fire.
