CHAPTER FOUR BLACKBEARD When the explosion took place, Rogers was sleeping. After his meeting with the governor, he had spent the rest of the evening shut into his cabin. He had lain down on the hammock, following with his eyes the hypnotic swinging of the lantern hanging over his head, pushed by the backwash which was making the ship roll. He had slowly fallen asleep, lulled by the rain pattering against the glass. As soon as the uproar woke him up, he opened his eyes wide and jumped to his feet, just in time to see the door of his cabin being thrown open.
