Elen and Keith heard footsteps and the sound of the door opening. Elen guessed that the voice came from the room where the Brighton Family was talking. That means they've finished talking about something and now they're out of the room.
Elen felt very panicked, she didn't know what would happen to them if they stayed in this house. Keith stepped to the window and opened it, he knew it was never locked and could easily be opened.
