*SEASON 4: THE TREE OF MYRA* *EPISODE 1: THE TREE* One month after Myra slept, the tree did not stop growing. Its trunk was as wide as three men, its branches punched through the palace roof. Kael touched its warm bark every morning. Lyra brought soup. "You're talking to the tree again? People think our savior is crazy." "The roots are reaching other cities," Kael said. "I felt them in the market." Eli, the white-haired girl, sat on a branch. "She is looking for the others. Like us." A blue leaf fell into Kael's bowl. When he touched it, he saw a vision — a boy on fire in a desert village, parents tying him to a post shouting "Cursed!", and soldiers taking him. Their banner: Varric's throne sewn back with gold. "Varric had a son," Kael whispered. "Joren." Far away, Joren with cold eyes watched a blue bird fly over his camp of caged children. "So the Ashen Child lives. Let him come." *EPISODE 2: THE ASH BOY* Kael, Lyra, and Eli rode east for seven days following the tree's root. The desert village from the vision was burned. Only one house remained. Inside, a boy of ten sat with his hands in a bucket of water. Every time he lifted them, they caught orange fire. He cried. "I didn't mean to burn the bread," he sobbed. "I didn't mean to burn mother." Kael knelt. "What's your name?" "Tomas. They said Joren will take me to be cured. But I heard the cages..." Lyra untied him. "We are not Joren. We are like you." When Kael touched Tomas's burning hands, his own fire met Tomas's and calmed it. Orange and orange became warm, not wild. "You are not cursed," Kael told him. "You are ash-blood. Like me. Like Eli." Behind them, hoofbeats. Joren's collectors — three men in black with golden throne patches. "That child is property of the True Throne," one said. Eli's eyes flashed gray. The ground under the collectors turned to soft ash and swallowed their horses. "He is not property," she said, voice double again. "He is ours." They rode back to Valor with Tomas, the first rescued child. But Kael knew — there were dozens more. *EPISODE 3: JOREN'S CROWN* Joren's camp was not a camp. It was a moving city of tents, built around a throne. Not the old black throne. This one was made of white bone and melted swords, and Joren had welded his father's broken crown back together with gold. "Father was weak," Joren told his general. "He tried to bargain with the First Mother. I will not bargain. I will become the Mother." In cages behind his throne, twelve ash children sat, blue tubes on their heads like Eli once had, feeding a new crystal — smaller than Myra's, but red, not blue. "Where did you get that crystal?" the general asked, scared. "From under every city," Joren smiled. "Father only found one Mother. There are more. Younger. Hungrier. And they love me, because I promise them what father promised Myra — children who never leave." A girl in a cage whispered, "Kael is coming." Joren touched the red crystal and it pulsed. "I know. Let him. I want him to see what a real king can build with cursed children." *EPISODE 4: NEW VALOR SCHOOL* Back in Valor, Kael turned the great hall into a school. No thrones. Just mats on the floor where the black throne once stood, under the Mother Tree. Tomas, Eli, and the other six children taught new children who came from nearby villages — children whose parents had heard that in New Valor, fire hands were not punished. Lyra taught them sword but with wooden sticks. "Fire is not a weapon unless you make it one," she said. One day, Tomas asked, "Why do we have to learn to hide our fire? Joren teaches his children to use it." Kael answered, "Joren teaches fire to burn. We teach fire to cook, to warm, to light dark rooms. Same fire. Different choice." That night, the Mother Tree dropped twelve blue leaves — each leaf showed a different village, each with a caged child. Kael counted. "Twelve. Joren has twelve." Eli said, "No. Thirteen now. He just took another while we were talking." Kael stood. "Then school is over. We go to war. Not with swords. We go to bring them home." *EPISODE 5: THE RED CRYSTAL* The journey to Joren's moving city took ten days. They traveled with twenty New Guard, all unarmed except Lyra, and all carrying water and blankets, not weapons. When they saw Joren's tents, Kael felt sick. The red crystal in the center was screaming — he could hear it without touching it. It was not a Mother like Myra. It was a child of Myra, twisted. Joren sat on his bone throne, wearing his father's gold-sewn crown. "Brother," Joren said, smiling. Kael had never met him, but Joren called him brother. "Father told me about you. The seventh child who ran. You were supposed to be the heart of his army. Instead you broke his chair." "I broke a chair made of stolen swords," Kael said. "You built a chair made of stolen children. Worse." Joren laughed and pointed to the cages. "Look at them. They were tied to posts, beaten by their parents. I saved them. I gave them food. I gave them purpose. What did you give Tomas? A mat on the floor?" Lyra stepped forward. "You gave them cages." "I gave them power!" Joren shouted and touched the red crystal. All twelve caged children screamed at once, their eyes turning red, and fire shot from their hands toward Kael. Eli jumped in front and raised her hands. Blue light met red fire. The air exploded. *EPISODE 6: THE FIRST BATTLE* The battle was not swords. It was children. Joren's twelve, forced by the red crystal, shot red fire. Eli, Tomas, and the five other Valor children shot blue and orange fire to shield Kael and Lyra. Kael ran through the fire, not burning — fire recognized fire. He reached the red crystal and put his hands on it. Instantly, he was not in the desert. He was in a dark place with a small girl made of red flame, crying alone. "Are you Myra?" Kael asked. "No! Myra was my mother! She left me! All the Mothers left us! We were too hungry! Too angry! So we slept and waited!" "You don't have to be hungry," Kael whispered, as he had whispered to Myra. "You can choose." The red girl hissed, "He promised me children who never leave! He promised!" "He lied," Kael said. "Like Varric lied to your mother." Kael did not hug this one. This one was too angry to be hugged. Instead, he offered his scarred hand. "Be hungry with us, not for us. Come to Valor. Be a hearth, not a wildfire." The red girl stared at his hand. Behind Kael, in the real world, Joren screamed, "Don't touch her! She is mine!" The red girl looked at Joren through Kael's eyes, then back at Kael's open hand. For a second, the red fire turned orange. *EPISODE 7: THE BREAKING OF RED* In the real world, the red crystal cracked. Joren fell from his throne, clutching his head. The golden crown melted off his head. "No! You are breaking her! You are breaking everything!" Lyra used the chance to break the cage locks with her sword. Twelve scared children fell out, coughing, their red eyes fading to normal. Tomas hugged a girl from the cages. "We have mats. Under a tree. It's warm." The red girl in Kael's vision finally touched his hand. The moment she did, the red crystal shattered into red birds, like Myra's blue birds, but smaller, faster. They flew into the sky and disappeared toward the other old empire cities. Joren crawled in the dust, his moving city collapsing as his soldiers ran. "Father was right. You are cursed. You take everything." Kael knelt beside him, not to kill him, but to look him in the eyes. "Your father took children to get power. You took children to not feel alone. You are not your father, Joren. You are just a lonely boy with a crown too heavy." Kael picked up the melted golden crown and threw it into the desert. "Come to Valor," Kael said. "No thrones there. Just a school." Joren spat, "Never." But he had no army now. Only desert. *EPISODE 8: THE ROOTS AWAKEN* They brought the twelve rescued children back to Valor. New Valor now had nineteen ash children. The Mother Tree grew so fast that night that its branches covered the entire courtyard. That night, Kael dreamed — not of Myra, but of many Myras. Dozens of trees, under dozens of cities, waking up because the red birds had touched them. Eli shook him awake. "The tree is talking. All of them are talking now. The other Mothers. The sisters of Myra. They felt the red child die. They are waking up. Some are kind like Myra. Some are angry like the red one." Lyra came in, breathless. "Scouts from the west. They say the ground cracked near Old Stone City and a tree like ours grew overnight, but its leaves are black." Kael looked at the Mother Tree. Its blue and orange leaves rustled, even though there was no wind. "We broke one throne and woke one Mother," Kael said. "But Varric buried many secrets. We have to find them before another Joren does." Eli nodded. "Tomas and I can hear them now. We can be your compass." Kael put on his silver ring made from the old throne. "Then tomorrow, we don't build a city. We build a road. To every city where a Mother sleeps." *EPISODE 9: JOREN'S CHOICE* Joren wandered the desert for three days with no water, no crown, no army. On the third day, he found a small black tree growing alone in the sand. Its leaves were black, like the scouts had said. Under it, a red bird — one of the shards from the red crystal — sat wounded, its light flickering. Joren, who had been taught that power is taken, did something he had never done. He gave. He poured his last water onto the roots of the black tree. The tree shivered and dropped a single black leaf into his hand. When he touched it, he did not see power. He saw his own father, Varric, as a young boy, scared, hiding under a table while his own father shouted. He saw that Varric had not been born cruel — he had been made cruel by a throne. Joren cried for the first time since he was five. The black tree whispered, not in words, but in warmth. It did not want children in cages. It wanted water. Joren stood, picked up the wounded red bird, and started walking — not away from Valor, but toward it. "I will not come as a king," he whispered to the bird. "I will come as a student." *EPISODE 10: THE COUNCIL OF ASH* In Valor, the council was arguing. "We have nineteen fire children! We need an army! Joren will come back!" shouted General Hark. "We have a school, not an army!" Lyra shouted back. Kael stood under the Mother Tree with all nineteen children sitting around him. The tree now had nineteen branches, one for each child, and each branch glowed the color of that child's fire. "We don't need to decide army or school," Kael said. "We need to decide what New Valor means. Varric's Valor meant fear keeps order. Myra's old world meant holding tight keeps love. Both failed." He looked at the children. "What do you want Valor to mean?" Tomas, the first rescued boy, stood up, his hands no longer needing a water bucket. "Valor should mean no one is tied to a post for being different." Eli stood. "Valor should mean no mother is left alone under a mountain." One by one, the children spoke. And the council, old generals and merchants, listened, and for the first time, they did not interrupt children. Lyra smiled at Kael. "That's your council now. A council of ash." Outside, a guard ran in. "Someone at the gate! It's Joren! And he... he is carrying a tree?" *EPISODE 11: THE BLACK LEAF* Joren entered New Valor with no weapons, no crown, barefoot, carrying a small black sapling in a pot, and the wounded red bird on his shoulder. The New Guard raised swords. The ash children hid behind Kael. Joren knelt and placed the black sapling on the ground in front of Kael. "I didn't come to fight," Joren said, his voice hoarse. "I came to return what I stole. This is from Old Stone City. It's dying. It needs your Mother Tree to live. I... I didn't know trees could be thirsty." Kael stared at his enemy, now a boy with cracked lips and dirty clothes. Eli walked forward, touched the black sapling. It was cold. "This is a Mother who never got children. She slept too long and forgot how to be warm. She is scared." Tomas poured water from his old bucket onto it. The black leaves shivered and one turned gray. Joren looked at Kael. "Can I... can I stay in the school? Not as a prince. As... as Tomas? Just a boy who burns too hot?" Lyra looked at Kael, hand on sword. The council held breath. Kael remembered Myra, who had been lonely for a thousand years and learned to let go in one hug. He remembered the red girl who chose to be a hearth. He extended his hand — the same hand he had offered to Myra and to the red girl. "Mat on the floor. Under the tree. Warm, not hot. You have to promise one thing." "Anything," Joren whispered. "No more thrones," Kael said. Joren nodded, tears in his eyes, and took Kael's hand. The red bird on his shoulder flew to the Mother Tree and became an orange leaf. The Mother Tree and the black sapling touched branches, and where they touched, a new color grew — purple. *EPISODE 12: A ROAD, NOT A THRONE* Three months later. New Valor was not a city with walls anymore. It was a road. The Mother Tree's roots had become a real road of soft glowing moss that stretched east to the desert village, west to Old Stone City, and south to three more villages where black saplings now grew, watered by ash children. No one needed to be a king to travel it. Anyone could walk it, and the moss lit their way at night. Kael and Lyra stood at the start of the road, with Eli, Tomas, Joren, and the other eighteen children — twenty now, including Joren — all wearing simple gray clothes, no crowns, no armor. "We have no throne to protect," Kael told the people gathered. "We have a road to share. Any child who burns, any mother who is lonely, any village that is scared — follow the moss. It will bring you home." Joren, now called just Joren, not Prince Joren, planted his black sapling — now gray and healthy — next to the Mother Tree. Two trees, once alone, now growing together. Eli took Kael's and Lyra's hands. "Where do we go now?" Kael smiled, with his silver ring glinting — not a crown, just a promise. "We go where the next tree is thirsty," he said. And twenty children with fire in their blood walked down the glowing road, not as an army, not as weapons, but as gardeners — to wake up every lonely Mother sleeping under every old city, one hug at a time. *END OF SEASON 4* ---
