**CHAPTER 14**

**Shadows Closing In** **Dante’s POV** The Montessi’s message felt like a noose tightening around my neck. They wanted us to know they were coming, to let fear eat away at us until they struck. But I wasn’t the type to wait for the storm. “Elena,” I said as I tossed the note onto the table, “you’re doubling up on security. You don’t leave this bunker without my say.” She bristled, her fiery brown eyes narrowing. “You can’t just lock me away, Dante. I’ve been training for this. I’m not a child.” “You’re right,” I said, stepping closer to her, my voice low and firm. “You’re not a child, but you’re the reason they’re coming. Do you understand that? Every move they make is calculated to draw you out. If you’re out there, it’s not just your life at risk—it’s all of ours.” She held my gaze, the defiance in her eyes softening to reluctant acceptance. “Fine. But don’t expect me to sit quietly and do nothing.” I didn’t respond. She wouldn’t listen to me anyway, not when her mind was set. That was what terrified me the most. --- **Elena’s POV** The bunker felt more like a cage with each passing hour. I couldn’t stand being cooped up while everyone else prepared for war. In the dimly lit training room, I worked tirelessly, firing shot after shot at the targets set up across the space. Each pull of the trigger sent a wave of adrenaline through me, temporarily drowning out the suffocating anxiety clawing at my chest. Marco walked in, his footsteps echoing in the silence. “You’re going to wear yourself out,” he said, his voice gentle but firm. “I need to be ready,” I snapped, lowering the gun and turning to face him. “I won’t let them catch me off guard again.” “You won’t,” he assured me. “Not with Dante, Lorenzo, and the rest of us watching your back.” I wanted to believe him, but the memory of the note burned in my mind. *We haven’t forgotten you.* --- **The First Sign** Later that night, the first crack in the uneasy calm appeared. I was in my room, staring at the ceiling, when the power flickered. For a moment, darkness enveloped the bunker, and my heart leaped into my throat. Seconds later, the emergency generators kicked in, flooding the halls with dim light. “Dante!” Lorenzo’s voice boomed through the comms. “We’ve got movement outside!” I bolted from my room, grabbing the pistol I kept under my pillow. By the time I reached the control room, Dante and the others were already there, scanning the security monitors. The cameras showed shadows moving at the edge of the perimeter, figures darting between trees, just out of sight. “Too many for a scout party,” Marco muttered. “This is them testing us.” Dante’s jaw tightened as he turned to Lorenzo. “Double the patrols. No one gets through.” “And if they do?” Lorenzo asked, his hand resting on the hilt of his knife. Dante’s voice was cold and unwavering. “We end them.” --- **Elena’s POV** I stood frozen at the edge of the control room, my chest tightening as I watched the figures on the screens. They were close—too close. “Go back to your room, Elena,” Dante said without looking at me. His tone was dismissive, as if I were a child. “No,” I said, stepping forward. “I’m staying. I need to know what’s happening.” Dante turned to me, his dark eyes blazing with frustration. “What’s happening is that I’m trying to keep you alive. Now go.” I clenched my fists, anger and fear swirling inside me, but I knew better than to argue. --- **The Attack** The first explosion shattered the uneasy tension. It rocked the bunker, the walls trembling as alarms blared. I stumbled, grabbing onto the nearest wall for support. “They’re breaching the perimeter!” someone shouted over the chaos. Dante barked orders, his voice cutting through the noise like a blade. “Defensive positions! Marco, take Elena to the safe room!” “No!” I yelled, shaking my head. “I’m not hiding while you fight!” “You’ll do as you’re told!” Dante snapped, grabbing my arm and shoving me toward Marco. “Go!” Marco didn’t give me a chance to protest, dragging me down the hall as more explosions echoed behind us. --- **Dante’s POV** The Montessi family had underestimated us. As their men stormed the outer gates, my team unleashed hell. Bullets tore through the night, and the air was thick with smoke and the acrid scent of gunpowder. But their attack wasn’t reckless—it was calculated. They weren’t just here to kill; they were here to take her. “Elena’s secure,” Lorenzo said, falling into step beside me. “But they’re not letting up.” “They won’t,” I growled, my grip tightening on my rifle. “Not until they have her—or until we send them a message.” --- **Elena’s POV** In the safe room, the walls felt like they were closing in on me. I could hear the distant gunfire, the muffled explosions. Each sound was a reminder that people were out there fighting—and dying—because of me. “I can’t stay here,” I said, pacing the room. “You don’t have a choice,” Marco said, blocking the door. “Yes, I do,” I snapped, grabbing the knife strapped to his belt. “I’m not hiding anymore.” --- **The Cliffhanger** As I stepped into the chaos of the bunker, gun in hand, I saw him. A shadow among shadows, moving with lethal precision. And then our eyes met. It wasn’t Dante or Lorenzo or anyone I recognized. It was someone new—someone who felt more dangerous than anyone I’d ever faced. He smiled, a cold, cruel smile that sent a chill down my spine. “Elena Torres,” he said, his voice smooth as silk. “You’re coming with me.”
