CHAPTER 62
Nova's POV
I can't stay in Nate's room forever, even if I badly want to do that. As he falls asleep on my thigh, I gently push him away, tucking him into bed.
My feet are heavy by the time I walk into the room that Cassian and I share. Cassian is sitting on the bed, and he looks over at me from head to toe.
I wait for him to say something. Anything. He doesn't.
My shoulders slouch as I sit down on the other side of the bed. We are arguing like cat and rat, and I don't like one bit of it. It isn't supposed to be that way. But now, it feels normal.
I suddenly turn to look at him. “If it came down to it… would you choose your pack over me?”
Cassian turns to look at me with confusion written over him. I can literally smell the confusion. Not just that. The hesitation as well.
“Where's all this coming from?” He asks, and my face falls.
“Nothing, Nevermind,” I whisper.
“No, I actually want to give you an answer,” he says, making me look at him again. Before he can even say a word, we hear howling outside.
Cassian looks over at me, and he seems to freeze. He immediately gets to his feet, and the both of us hurry out of the house. Jason joins us on the way, and we get outside just in time to see all the wolves bowing down, with one knee on the sand.
They do it all at once. There is nothing normal about what is going on.
I can suddenly feel a sulfur pulse of energy tear through my skin. The golden threads pulse against my skin at the same time, and I let out a cry.
Everything inside of me reacts negatively. It feels like silver against gold, while they work together at the same time.
I scream, as tears stream down the sides of my face. Cassian manages to hold me close to him, but that doesn't help with the pain.
“I'm done waiting,” a female voice echoes through the whole compound. My blood runs cold immediately, and I move away from Cassian's touch.
“What's wrong?” He asks. I look around, trying to figure out where the voice even comes from.
“I recognize the voice,” I whisper. “It's the one of the silver eyed girl. She found us first.”
The wolves remain in the same spot, one knee on the ground. I can see the silver energy pulsing through them invasively.
It crawls through the mate bonds like poison right in front of my eyes. Some of the wolves are crying and panicking. Some are even bleeding from their nose. The worst part? They still can't get up.
Cassian stands in front of me. At that point, he only feels like a shadow. Because I can still hear her voice in my head.
She is done waiting.
The golden threads within me clash with each other, and Cassian turns around, holding me close to him.
The pain gets even worse, and I can feel energy tear through my skin. But there is no blood dripping down my skin. I can feel it. It is there.
Cassian holds me even closer. I can barely explain myself to him. My mouth refuses to work, and I am just there against his chest, heaving and fighting for my dear life.
I struggle to keep my eyes open. The pack members are looking at me. I can already see the judgmental looks on their faces. They know that whatever is going on, I am somehow connected to the silver eyed girl.
But how?
Cassian wraps his arm around my thigh, as he carries me inside like I weigh nothing. I quickly wrap my arms around his shoulders to keep myself steady, even if my body doesn't want to act accordingly.
The energy inside me makes me thrash my limbs around. He doesn't even care about the wolves that are outside bleeding through their nose.
That is it. That is the answer to the question I asked earlier.
He places me gently on the bed, and the thrashing reduces a bit. “The pack already fears me,” I say, and he runs his hand through his hair.
“Then maybe you should stop throwing yourself at things that try to kill you. Goddess knows what happened to you in that temple without your knowledge. And yet, you go around following Killian.”
I shove him away through the bond, and I notice the way he physically recoils. Like I have hurt him. He narrows his eyes at me, and I bring my knees to my chin as I shake.
Pain tears through me as I watch him like that. Hurt. Because of me.
What am I becoming? “I'm sorry,” I whisper as my voice shakes.
“It's okay,” Cassian says, but I can tell that he is lying. He doesn't want me to feel bad, and that is it.
He walks towards me gently like he is approaching something that could definitely burn him. He cups my chin gently, making me look up at him. His forehead rests against mine.
“You think I don't know how powerful you are?” He asks calmly. “That's what scares me the most.”
My breath catches immediately. This man knows how to destroy every bit of composure I have.
My chest suddenly surges forward. I can see the silver eyes girl again. This doesn't feel like a vision. It feels like it is happening right in front of me.
She looks up at me, and tears are streaming down her face, with chains around her limbs.
“He found me,” she whispers. The connection cuts immediately, and Cassian is asking me what happened. His voice is coming in muffles. Like he is under water. I can barely make sense of what he is saying. Not with the ringing sound in my ears.
He found her.
For the first time, I feel genuine terror.
