CHAPTER 49

CHAPTER 49 NOVA'S POV I stare around the office one more time. I can barely stay in one place. It is hard to pay any attention to even one thing. My hands fumble with my camera, as I go through it, filled with pictures of people, and the golden strips of energy. I have to stop looking at it. I can feel Cassian like he is here in the room with me, and I can tell that he is worried. He is just masking it very well. We should have seen it, shouldn't we? The broker definitely is not going to leave me alone. Not until he gets what those people are looking for. I hate the fact that we have to go back to that phase where we are talking about some kind of cartel that I do not even give two bits about. My feet start bouncing off the floor, and the energy hums underneath my skin again. “Stop,” I whisper. This time, I can tell that it is more than willing to be stubborn. It is not willing to stop. Instead, the hum gets more intense, so much that I can almost hear it. “Outside,” I hear a voice say, and I am more than willing to ignore it. The voice is definitely coming from my head. And every time that I have listened to it, it did not end well. “Stop,” I whisper again, and the voice screaming outside gets even more intense. Before I even know what is happening, I get to my feet, and I curl my fingers around the cold doorknob. As I pull the door towards myself, the cool breeze from outside immediately hits me. This is wrong. All of this is wrong. But that does not stop me from moving forward. I wait for the guard to tell me to go back inside. But as I walk right past him, it is almost like he is frozen in time. None of this is okay, but I still do not stop in my steps. The moment my shoes hit the sand, I know that I am making the right decision. “Where are you going?” I hear Cassian's voice in my head. “Why are you on the move?” There is a small smile threatening to spill. A part of me likes this man when he is panicking about me. It is one of the things that keeps me genuinely happy. I did not know that I needed some kind of reassurance until I met him. My vision seems to change, and it is almost like I can see through the golden vision strips. My sight is a little more focused. As I take more steps away from the office, I feel the bond snap. Something has changed. Just as I get to the center of the pack, I suddenly hear a loud sound that is nothing less than an explosion. People scream, and my thoughts are immediately confirmed. “Where did that happen?” I ask Cassian, and I feel his heartbeat accelerate. Mine does the same. “Right outside the pack,” he says. He pauses for a while, just before adding. “They're here.” I take a deep breath, as I try to calm myself down. “They have been here for a long time,” I say, and I cannot hear him anymore. He is safe. He has to be. I turn towards the palace, right to Nate's room. I knock on the door, acknowledging the guard standing in front of it. He gives me a respectful nod, and the door is suddenly pushed open. Nate looks shocked as he sees me. He quickly wraps his arms around me, and I can tell that he genuinely misses me. “I'm here,” I whisper, leaning down to kiss his hair. “Where have you been?” he asks. “I keep asking Jason about you, and he keeps saying you are sick, but I do not believe him. And what is that noise outside?” “I was sick,” I whisper, looking around. “But for now, there is something going on outside, and I do not want to see you out there. Understood?” I ask, and I can see it written all over him that he wants to argue. Well, we are siblings. What better proof? “No,” I answer immediately. “Please, do not argue about this. I just need you to stay here. And I will be back once everything is handled.” “And Cassian?” he asks, and I can tell that he is worried about Cassian as well. “He will be fine. And I will make sure he comes to see you.” I am just about to head out, when he holds my hand again. “I want you to promise me something,” he says, and I can feel my heartbeat increase. My throat goes dry, and I can barely bring words up. “And what could that be?” I ask, and he presses his lips into a thin line. “I would like you to come and sleep in my room for a day. Just the way you used to when we were kids.” If I am trying to keep myself composed the whole time, I lose it at that point. I can feel tears prick the back of my eyes. “Of course,” I whisper. “I will be here to have dinner with you, or to have a sleepover in your room just like the old days.” “With Cassian involved.” “Of course,” I say, smiling. He allows me to hug him one more time, and I lock the door gently behind me. I turn to look at the guard in front of me. “Please, do not let him leave the room,” I whisper, and he bows. But that is not even enough for me. “If he manages to leave the room, you will not like what comes your way.” A shiver runs through him so visibly that I can see it. I smirk in response. Good. There is a feeling in my chest that tells me I am being just like Cassian. He thrives on people being scared of him. And here I am, doing the same thing. By the time I head downstairs, I know that I am not scared of anything. I just want to go and see what is happening. I want to see things with my own two eyes. My heart has stopped racing, and a part of me looks for the fear I felt a few minutes ago. It is gone. And for just a second, I feel a smile threaten to spill. This is going to be fun.
