CHAPTER 41

CHAPTER 41 NOVA'S POV It was a miracle that I was able to drag myself back to bed the night before. Cassian's arms around me were enough to steady my breathing. I barely slept, but he woke up randomly in the middle of the night to deposit kisses on my forehead. I kept my eyes closed the whole time, but he didn't have to know about that. I was being good. Forcing myself to be small, just as I have learned to do all my life. Cassian constantly assured me that it didn't have to be like that. And now? I am sitting in the garden among flowers, inhaling every bit of them that I can. I look across the garden, and Nate gives me a small wave as he trains with Jason. They are both kind enough to let me watch. Just as it has been in the last few days, Cassian is locked up in his office. But he always comes back. I miss him more than I am supposed to. And he keeps assuring me that he is okay. He just has a lot of work to do. If he and Jason are in on it together, I can't tell. But Jason is supporting him as well. So that counts. And I want to believe. After all, he doesn't doubt anything I say after the last time at the sacred pack grounds. That is everything I need to know that he trusts me more than life itself. As I turn back to the flowers, taking in their scent, I notice eyes on my skin. I swallow hard. That is the one thing that has slowly become constant. Eyes on my skin. Watching me. But this time, I am so f*****g sure that it isn't Beatrice. I can still feel the eyes even when she goes out for her little shopping. Forgive me for calling it little. Because if I am being honest, she doesn't come back with a tiny amount of bags. And Killian doesn't seem to complain. It is almost like it is a normal transaction between the both of them. Well, good for them. Shopping is one of the things that I don't even like doing. “Come on,” I hear a voice call out to me, and I turn around. Nate and Jason are still playing, like they don't just notice that somebody speaks. “Did you guys hear that?” I ask, and they shake their heads. “I'll be right back,” I whisper. If they can hear me, I don't know. And I am not sure that I care that much. My legs are slightly shaky, and I follow along the path, like I have it committed to memory. This time, I make sure to put boots on. “Come on,” the voice urges further, and it is slightly louder. That is all the assurance that I need to know that I am on the right path. I take a deep breath, and I can feel the hum underneath my skin. But it is just pulsing for now. It isn't as strong as last night. And I am more than glad about that. I clear my throat, going further into the place. The familiar trees, and the figs on the floor. Cassian would go crazy if he knew that I am here. But at this point, it only adds to the thrill. Before I know it, I am standing right in front of the markings. They look even more ancient. But as I step into the place, there is a different kind of glow about it. I can't deny the fact that I love it. There is something about it that is pulling me in. “Go ahead,” the voice in my head urges, and I hate that I am even listening to it. But it feels like I don't have a choice. I put a shaky hand out, and my hand connects with the mark. This time, it doesn't hesitate. It pulls me in like it has been waiting for me to do this its whole life. My chest is pushed forward, and my head is turned up to the sky. For just a second, I can see the sun clearly. I close my eyes, and I see a woman blazing in gold, her hair falling at her sides. She is smiling. At the same time, I see people kneeling before her. It is almost like it is a whole pack. The smirk on her face is almost terrifying. The pack members kneeling in front of each other suddenly turn against each other. Her hair makes the grass catch fire. People run for their lives. But the smile on her face only grows. She extends her hand for a man to take, and he takes it. He stands beside her, but his face is expressionless. Before I know what is happening, the man catches fire as well. His eyes stay fixed on her as he slowly turns into ashes. “You're not meant to survive,” a voice says, and it is angry. I try to pull away immediately. It doesn't work. I can't snap my eyes open. “Please,” I beg, and I can feel tears slide down the sides of my face. The tears burn, and my whole body shakes. Everything in the vision goes dark. Then it shifts. I see my younger self hiding underneath the table, while my parents' voices come from the living room as they argue. Nate isn't there with me, and I can see the golden light around me again. My mom's voice is shaking, and for some reason, I can hear her clearly. “They'll come for her. She can't fight for herself. She needs to be saved. Please,” my mom begs, and I can feel my younger self shaking. Just through the window, I see a pair of eyes watching me in the darkness. My chest surges forward again, and I am back in the normal world. My hands are clawing at anything. The only thing my fingers touch is sand. It slips through my fingers like it is nothing. I open my mouth to let out a sound. Nothing comes out, and the tears burn my eyes. I bring my hand to my face, trying to wipe them away. My hands are shaking, and my heart is pounding in my chest. It is a miracle that I don't have a heart attack. I can't even remember everything from the vision I just had. I don't ever remember my parents arguing in front of me. They are the perfect couple. The neighbors say it. Even I believe it is true. The only thing I can pull from the second vision is that my parents are hiding me this whole time. They are trying to protect me with everything in them. And then, someone puts an end to them. But why? To be able to get to me? My head spins with the amount of questions in it. I look up again at the ancient markings. They seem to glow back at me. I don't know if I am imagining it, but there is a satisfied look to it. “What am I?” I whisper.
