CHAPTER 42
CASSIAN'S POV
I hate the fact that I have to go and find Killian all over again, but after hearing everything I just heard from Beatrice, there is no way I am not going to find him.
She finally left my room, and I was more than sure that she was going on one of her thousand shopping sprees. It is none of my business.
As I get to the apartment that I gave them at the pack, I push the door open. This time, I don't even wait. I am not sure that I need their permission either.
I just want to f*****g talk to him.
He is sitting in the living room, sipping bourbon. I hate the fact that he is always composed. Every f*****g time that I came on him, unaware.
He turns to look at me, with a small smile on his lips.
“Well, look who we have here again. What do you want, little brother?”
There is this glint in his eyes. A look that makes me immediately start to rethink my decision of even coming to see him. Maybe I should have just held on to rethink things.
But f**k it, I am already here.
“You know who I'm here to talk about again,” I say, and he c***s an eyebrow, gesturing for me to sit down right opposite him.
For just a second, I can't help but imagine that he came to the pack specifically to trouble me in any way he can. What if he came here just to make sure he used whatever he knew about Nova against me? And that is the main reason I am here to see him.
“I would rather not,” I say, and he presses his lips into a thin line before c*****g his head to the side.
“It depends,” he says, setting his cup down.
It is starting to look like I am the annoyed little brother, and he is the older brother who always has things in check.
Fuck, I don't even want to think like that. He doesn't know what it is like to be me.
“Nova,” I say. “What do you know about her?”
He c***s an eyebrow, before rolling his eyes to the back of his head.
“There is something about the way you say her name. You practically worship her, don't you?” he asks, and I can't even bring myself to deny it.
“Are you going to tell me what I need to know, or not?” I ask, raising my voice slightly. “Answer the question.”
“Easy, wolf,” he says calmly. “There’s something about her that is a little too hard to ignore. The way she talks. The way she stands. The way she even smells. It's not hard to figure out that she's something different. Something rare.”
That isn't what I want to hear. I am waiting for him to spill how he even knows about Nova. But from the way he is talking, I am already sure that he isn't going to tell me what I need to know.
He isn't even done speaking.
“You know, the second I set my eyes on her, I could swear that I felt something. There was this spark.”
My wolf lets out a low growl at the bottom of my throat.
Killian turns to look at me. “You think she belongs to you because of the bond.”
“Not just the bond,” I say calmly. “Even before the bond, I could tell she was mine.”
I hate the fact that I am being this patient. That there isn't blood dripping down the sides of his face. But I want information. I have to bear anything.
“That's what you think, Cassian,” he says, finally getting to his feet. “Let's imagine that you're right. What happens when she finally outgrows you?”
“That won't happen,” I say, but even my own voice falters.
She can't outgrow me. I am going to meet her at every level. I have only thought about that briefly, and I want to believe that it is something I can handle at any point.
He suddenly turns to look at me. “You know, I can feel her too.”
My hands are already balling into fists. “How much can you feel?”
“It's a shame that I can't feel too much. I can only feel her spark. I can feel her enough to be interested in her.”
At that point, I feel myself lose control, and my wolf starts to take over. I am already halfway into the shift when I try to take control from my wolf again.
Killian leans back against the wall, not even flinching. He knows that I won't touch him.
Not when I remember what happened the last time I did it when we were kids.
My mom made sure I never made that move again.
His lips slowly curl upwards in a small smile. “You still haven't recovered from your childhood emotional scars, have you?” he asks, looking bored. “I just knew it. You'll never really recover.”
I slowly transform back to my human form. I crack my neck, with my eyes fixed on Killian. “Be careful, brother. Your blood might be dripping down my hand faster than we all think it would.”
He smirks. “You should be the careful one. You're not the only predator in this game.”
With that, he walks right past me, heading out of the house.
A game? This is a game to him?
It is little wonder he keeps smiling over and over again. He sees this as some kind of joke.
I feel my knees give way for the first time in years, and I stay there for a while, with my head between my thighs.
Everything is coming too fast. Memories from the past.
Having to visit the priestess countless times with my father, as he tried to look for a cure. The pitiful shakes of heads from the pack members. The way I was shoved to the side, as my father's pyre was set on fire.
The way I was the only one who seemed to miss him. My mom was having too much fun with the men who bowed in front of her. The other motorcycle racers who derived too much joy in taking her for rides. She never said no.
And Killian was given the chance to shine over and over again. Yet, I wasn't even allowed to say my own part of the story.
That was when Jason and I moved out of the pack, creating our own little pack and winning members over. The ones who were willing to follow us.
Killian and my mom swore that those people would return on their knees, with blood flowing down their faces. I was more than glad that none of those things happened.
He ended up taking Beatrice away, and she was happy with him. People saw it as the perfect match. And all I could see was just another method of betrayal.
And the moment my mom died, I was sure as hell that I wasn't going to be that child who went to her funeral for closure.
Killian and I are just two brothers who hate each other. I can never forget the way he looked at me the last time we saw each other.
“I guess it's just you and me, Cassian,” he whispered.
I stayed as far away as I could.
And then, Nova comes into my life that night. And I could swear on anything that my life doesn't remain the same. There is a shift.
Something that I can't get enough of.
And now that Killian claims to be able to feel her, I don't know what that means. I do know that I am not sharing her. And his interest is pointless.
Fuck, I need to find her.
