CHAPTER 60

CHAPTER 60 NOVA'S POV “What kind of bonds?” I ask. I am waiting for Killian to lose his mind and tell me to shut the f**k up any moment if I don't understand anything. But he doesn't. He is more than patient. A part of me figures out that I might have actually found that one trait that both brothers have. “Mate bonds,” Killian starts. “Pack bonds. Emotional wars. You know, pack wars started because of your kind. That's the main reason why people hunted them down.” I can barely stop my hand from covering my mouth. Who am I if I am not shocked about what is happening? The thought that I am about to do the same thing crosses my mind for just a second, but I try to push the thought away. I am not a monster. I am powerful, I guess. But in a good way. I hold on to one of the pillars to keep myself steady, and Killian leans over, touching one of the ancient markings. His fingers brush against mine, and I feel all the hairs on my skin stand up. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The markings light up anyway, and Killian smiles again, like they bring back memories. I want to ask what he remembers, but I don't want to do any of that. I don't think the both of us are that close. Maybe it would be better to maintain the distance. It is safer for the both of us that way. Killian suddenly pulls back. “Do you know how dangerous it is for someone of your kind to fall in love?” He asks, and I look up at him. My mate's older brother is the last person that I expect to be asking me about love. But hey, nothing that I expect happens to me. My life is running its own script, on its own course. I have already learned to just let it. I am just about to reply, when the ground beneath the both of us shakes, and one of the walls suddenly pushes open. I look over at Killian, and then back at the chamber. There is no way I am going in. Not with all those bones peeking out. Hundreds of them. --- CASSIAN'S POV Something is happening. I can feel it. And it is nothing safe. Nova can barely ever stay in a place. And I doubt that she is even anywhere near our room. I head out of the office, already blaming myself for letting her out of my sight. I should have followed her out of my sight. Her scent is everywhere. I can practically smell the curiosity all over her. She is gone. Again. I try tracking her by inhaling her scent. I stop for just a second. “Where's Nova?” I ask one of the guards, and he looks like he doesn't want to say what he knows. “Don't you dare lie,” I say, and he nods. “She went out with someone.” She isn't talking to anyone except Jason, Nate and me. There are only two more people that would take that step for taking her out of the pack. Beatrice or Killian. I am becoming possessive in ways that I don't like. But the thought of Nova with Killian twists something inside me. Something vicious. That is the motivation I need to keep moving further. I am led outside the pack, and I feel my muscles tense. I finally stop right in front of the temple, and I spot the both of them, standing a little too close to each other. They are both staring at ruins. How nice. Killian is the first one to turn and look at me. There is a smug look on his face. Of course, he knows how I feel about the both of them standing there together. He just derives joy in pushing my buttons. “Really?” Nova asks, running her hands through her hair. “I'm not even allowed to breathe?” “With him?” I ask, pointing at Killian. “Definitely not.” The fact that he claims to try finding out what is up with Nova isn't supposed to somehow end the feud between the both of us. The look that he gives me tells me that he feels the same way. “Let's go back to the pack,” I say, holding my hand out for Nova to take, but she doesn't even take it. She has her hands folded in front of her chest. “I'm not going to be ordered around,” she says. “I'm not ordering you. I'm just keeping you safe. Every single time I try to keep you safe, you disappear!” “Because every time you try to protect me, you cage me!” Nova snaps back. I can feel the bond snap between the both of us, and even Killian takes a step back like he can feel it. I don't even want the bastard there. The bond tugs tighter, and I walk into the temple, cupping Nova's cheeks, before kissing her. She doesn't pull away. Instead, she kisses me harder, like she is trying to win me over. I am not angry, and it shows in the kiss. There is less hesitation, more hunger. It feels almost punishing. I can hear rocks moving, and I break the kiss, but I still bring Nova closer to me. Even she looks shocked, as the rocks seem to pulse with energy. The ancient markings on the wall are all glowing at the same time. Nova takes a step towards the markings, and they glow up even more, like they are reacting to her. They start shifting, like they are forming a passage. Killian immediately takes a step back. He understands more of the old language, so I am willing to let him take control this time. His eyes fly along the rows where the scripture is written, and his jaw is practically on the floor. “What does it say?” Nova asks in a whisper, like she is already expecting the worst. “This is impossible,” Killian says, looking over at me. Directly at me. “She's not supposed to exist.”
