CHAPTER 30

CHAPTER 30 NOVA'S POV Is this the right time to ask what we are? Hell, that’s the last thing on my mind. The sunlight gleaming into the room is enough to wake me up. A small smile is plastered on my lips. We forgot to draw them down last night. Flashbacks from last night replay in my head nonstop. I press my thighs together. Is it time to think about the aftercare that he offered? After the countless men that would walk right out of the door after having s*x with me, Cassian is different. And for the first time, I don’t feel like I’ve made a mistake. Cassian isn’t going to be one of those mistakes that I make over and over again. For the first time, this whole thing feels right. I extend my hand to the other side of the bed, and he isn’t there. My throat starts closing up immediately. Maybe I spoke a little too soon. By the time I swing my feet off the bed, it takes a lot for me to get back on my feet. My legs are shaking, and I can still feel the soreness inside me. He is Cassian. It is normal for him to leave his imprint on me. That is when I hear the clinking of cutlery downstairs. He is still around. I am not supposed to be relieved, but I am. I brush my teeth, have my bath, and slip on something comfortable before going to unplug my phone from where I charged it the night before. After what happened the last time in the desert, I don’t think I am going to ever forget to charge my phone again. But if my phone was charged, I wouldn’t have met Cassian. I am not one to think about destiny. So what the f**k am I doing? I notice that I have three missed calls from Becky. One of the people that I keep close here in the city. I don’t hesitate to press the redial button and press the phone to my ear. She answers on the first ring. “Nova!” She screams, making me flinch. “Hello, Becky,” I mutter, and she squeals. “Girl, where have you been? We have been trying to reach you for what seemed to be ages.” Oh, yes. Did I mention that we also have what seems to be a group? Where we meet up every Wednesday. And if I am right, I have missed exactly two Wednesday meetings. I don’t have any pictures to show them, and I wasn’t there to show them how to take the perfect pictures either. “I just decided to take a little break.” “Without telling us? You forgot that you have friends that would actually be worried about you?” I press my lips into a thin line. The last thing I see Becky and her team of inquisitive women as, is friends. “It was important.” “It had to be. Because we even did as much as come to your house. Everywhere was under lock and key.” Just as I expected. It is a miracle that even I don’t misplace my own key and phone. As far as I remember, they just appear whenever I need them. And that is convenient enough. I am not going to complain. That is when I realize that I have zoned out, and she is rambling on. The sound of cutlery downstairs distracts me again. “I’ll call you right back, Becky,” I say, hanging up before she can even say anything. She is going to spam me with countless messages, asking for a meetup. I am already bracing myself for it. I lead my shaky legs downstairs when I get a glimpse of what is happening on the kitchen counter. Nate is sitting there, watching Cassian flip eggs over. “I’m trying not to see her as the villain in my story,” Nate says, and I know who he is talking about. It has to be me. Cassian stops flipping the eggs, and the aroma hits me. But that is the last thing on my mind at that point. “She came to pick you up, didn’t she?” He asks, and Nate looks away. Nate is growing, and he is growing rapidly. It is going to be pointless lying to him. He has seen more than he is supposed to. We both have. “What if I was adopted before she came?” He asks, and Cassian gives him a small smile. The softest he has looked since I knew him. “She would have found you with everything she has in her. She loves you. You just don’t know it yet.” “I don’t know if she does,” Nate mutters. “Did she ever lay a hand on you while growing up?” Cassian asks, and he shakes his head immediately. “She was the most protective big sister. She kept me from our aunt.” At the mention of our aunt, my hands ball into fists. “Then give her a chance again. You have no idea what she’s been through.” Cassian deposits the eggs on a plate before pushing them over to Nate. Nate takes a bite of the eggs, and I notice the way he nods his head. “Fine. I’ll try.” I force my legs to work, and I plaster a smile on my face. “Good morning,” I start, and Cassian looks at me from head to toe. Like he is going to bend me over and f**k me again. Nate pushes his chair away from the table, and just for a second I am scared that he is going to walk away. Instead, he walks right up to me, wrapping his hands around my waist and pulling me in for a hug. My limbs aren’t working. I have to get them to work before he pulls away. After a lot of effort, I finally wrap my arms around him, before resting my head against his. “I’m sorry,” he says, and I feel tears prick the back of my eyes. “You don’t have to be sorry. I wasn’t good enough,” I say, pulling away, with my hands on his shoulders. “But things will be fine now. I promise.” He gives me a small nod before taking my hand and leading me to the kitchen. “You want your own eggs and pancakes?” Cassian asks, and I give him a small nod. “Where did you get the ingredients?” I ask, and he waves something in the air. I notice that it is another phone. I can’t help but c**k an eyebrow at him. “I managed to find the place. And I bought the stuff needed.” How much more is this man going to surprise me? He knows how to cook. He has money that I am just going to guess is from motorcycling and other pack activities. I watch him get to work and move swiftly. Before I know it, three pancakes are right on my plate, and Nate is pouring out a glass of orange juice. The doorbell suddenly goes off, and Nate gets to his feet. “I’ll get it,” he says, and I press my forehead with my fingers. It has to be Becky. Showing up to my house unannounced. She is the only one that is going to do something like that. “Just tell her I’m not around,” I say, and Nate smirks at me. “Who is that?” Cassian asks. “Should be just one of the troublesome women around.” He gives me a small nod when Nate opens the door. For a few seconds, I don’t even hear a sound. “Nate?” I call out, and there is no response. Cassian and I drop everything that we are doing as we head to the living room. Nate is just standing still, with his eyes on the person. I walk over to his side, and I see the last person that I expect to see at my doorstep. She c***s her head to the side, with a smile on her lips. “Hello, Nova darling,” my aunt says. “Won’t you let me in?”
