CHAPTER 32

CHAPTER 32 CASSIAN'S POV Nova wants to be out of that place. I can tell. The way her body language has changed. She just wants out. Her aunt is the last person that I expect to show up at that place. But at the same time, I should have known that she would want to come back for some kind of confrontation. People like her think that they deserve answers every single time. It takes a lot for me not to tear her apart. Seeing Nate freeze like that is everything I need to take action. But at the same time, she is Nova's family. And I am going to let her handle things herself. She deserves the privacy that I can give her. Everything that is happening is the last thing that I would have expected after marking her as mine. She is dragging me into her life, and I can't deny the fact that I would follow her any time she calls out to me. Her eyes are fixed on me, and I gesture for her to stay on the floor. I am the one that pulls the door open this time. I take in the sight of the older woman standing in front of us. She is already craning her neck, trying to look into the house. I quickly block her path, and she licks her lips, looking at us from head to toe. “Well, I just wanted to see if Nova is around.” That is when I feel Nova get to her feet. She narrows her eyes at the woman for just a millisecond, before plastering a smile on her lips. I almost smile at her mischievousness. “Becky. I expected you to come,” she says, and the woman she calls Becky smiles before looking back at me from head to toe. She looks back at Nova, like she is waiting for answers. She suddenly extends the cookies in her hands toward Nova. Nova takes the tin. “You didn't have to,” Nova says, and I go back into the house, where Nate is still standing at the bottom of the stairs. For just a second, I am more than thankful that there are other children at the pack. He will have other people to play with. Because there is definitely something off about the way he is standing there. I don't need anybody to tell me that it is the effect of his aunt coming with her stupid visit. “You okay?” I ask, squatting down to his level, and he gives me a small nod. “I don't think I want to be here either,” he says, and I press my lips into a thin line before tapping his shoulder and leading him to the living room. Thankfully, we don't even have much to pack. He only needs some new clothes. And shopping for them isn't going to be an issue. Somehow, the door is slammed, and I just know that Nova must have been the one to chase her little friend away. She puts the tin of cookies on the center table, and she looks over at Nate. “You can have them if you want,” she says, and he heads toward the tin, devouring the cookies. He has been eating like that the whole time. Like he is scared that the food is going to run away. Nova is looking at him with pity and guilt written all over her. A part of me can't wait for him to have a normal life as a child. And then he would be forced to get rid of the regret. But now that he is going back to the pack, I am not that sure that he is going to have a normal life. Either way, we have to make it work somehow. As soon as Nate is done with the cookies, Nova looks around the house one more time before making him wear his shoes. She puts on her own leather boots as well. By the time I get outside, fully dressed in my boots and jacket, they are both standing outside. I get on, and they do the same, just as they did the night before. “Clothes first,” I tell Nova, and she gives me a small nod. I ride toward the boutique that I saw that morning, and they get to try on clothes. They pick the ones they like, and before I know it, we are back on the bike again. By the time I spot the pack gate, my hands tighten around the handlebars. Nate's hands tighten around my waist, and I can tell that he can sense that there is something off as well. I drive into the pack, and I am welcomed just the way I am expecting. Four wolves are fighting aggressively, snarling and growling. They are in their full werewolf forms, teeth bare. “Enough!” I order, and they immediately step away from each other. They smell of fur and blood. I look over at Nate, and he has a small smirk on his lips. Not the reaction that I am expecting. “You aren't shocked?” The men who are fighting immediately transform to their human form, with their clothes clinging to their skin. Even Nova looks shocked. “He didn't know about werewolves beforehand, did he?” I ask her through the mind link, and she shakes her head. Nate shrugs at me. “There's nothing to be shocked about. It just reminds me of mom. She used to do this to stop me from crying.” Nova c***s an eyebrow, and I can tell that she is shocked. But at least, we know that she isn't fully human. That is the reason why she has all those powers. There is nothing normal about Nova. Nothing fully human. “I guess that answers the questions about who your parents really are. And the golden strips.” She looks over at me, giving me a small nod. I can tell that she isn't fully happy about the whole thing, but she is masking it very well. “I'll show him to his room,” she says, and one of the wolves hurries to grab the bags that are on the motorcycle. I watch Nova lead Nate away, and I turn back to look at the other werewolves that are standing in front of me. “Must you always show just how rogue you are?” I ask, and they have their gaze fixed to the ground. “This should be the last time I walk into the pack and see something like that.” With that being said, I walk away toward the pack palace. But I can't push away the thought that something is about to go awfully wrong.
