CHAPTER 17
CASSIAN'S POV
We are about to leave when something hits me.
There was something about the way these men were fighting. I have been in countless fights, and I can swear that there was something wrong with the way these ones were fighting. It is almost like they were not even interested in the fight. They were stalling.
Yes, Nova is strong. But it is almost like they allowed her to kill them. I don't want to think of it that way, but that is exactly what happened in my opinion.
But why?
Nova holds on to my hand, distracting me. She buries her face in my chest, and I can't help but wrap my arms around her.
“Come on,” I whisper. “Let's go.”
She nods at me. Jason is still looking at her, but I don't even care. It is about time that I have a conversation with him. It is almost like he has a little beef with her.
Just as Nova and I are about to cross through the door, a little clap comes. The person is smiling, and I can't help but turn around.
It’s a man. He looks between Nova and I with an eyebrow c****d.
His clapping is so loud that it echoes around the room.
“Who is that?” I hear the other guards mutter. I narrow my eyes, trying to see the person more clearly, before he steps into the light.
Jason is already taking out his sword, and I hold him down, with my hand extended in his direction.
“We shouldn't give people like this a chance,” he says through the mind link, making me shoot him a look.
The same person that says we need to do everything with a strategy?
Nova is the first person to step forward. I notice the way her knees wobble, and I quickly drag her back.
“Protective just as they said you would be,” the man says with his smile growing.
“Who are you?” I ask in a stern tone, and he finally looks at me.
I notice his clothes. They are too clean for someone that was involved in the chaos of the fight.
He couldn't have been waiting for the fight to end, can he? But that is exactly what it looks like.
His hair is slightly gelled, and I can't hold back the feeling of sniffling in the air for his wolf's scent. It isn't there. It is non-existent.
What the hell?
But there is something in the air. And I can smell it coming off him. A kind of energy. Nothing close to Nova's, but it could be related.
“You did quite a great job, Cassian.” I can't help but swallow hard. He f*****g knows my name.
I put Nova behind me. “I asked who the f**k you are.”
“Easy, wolf,” he says calmly. “I'm the broker. The middle man connecting Nova and the cartel.”
I frown. What cartel? “What do you want Nova for? And how much are they paying you?”
A part of me is willing to pay him thrice the price for him to leave Nova alone.
Jason won't be too proud of that decision.
“I wouldn't be talking too much if I were you, Cassian,” he starts, making me look over at him. “Especially when I know everything about you.”
Nova peeks out from behind me. “What do you know?” she asks calmly.
He seems more than delighted that she asks. “Oh, I'm so glad you asked. Do you know about your mate's curse?” He asks first, and Nova looks up at me, like she is trying to confirm it. I don't say a word, and I am hoping that my face doesn't give anything away.
But this broker isn't even done talking.
“I know about the mate bond as well. Your neck gives everything away. How Cassian is attracted to it. The effect that it has when he touches you. And of course, how he always wants to bite into it.”
My hands are slowly balling into fists at my side. This man knows way more than he is giving off. But the main question is, how long has he been watching us for him to know things like this?
“What else do you know?” I ask, and I can hear Jason grunt.
“I could finish him now. He's unaware of anything,” he is saying again, through the mind link.
“There's no need,” I say. Getting in a fight with him will bring more men in silver. And Nova will want to save me.
I am never a man to walk away from a fight. But Nova is involved now. And so is silver. I am not going to depend on her and drain all her f*****g energy.
“Nova's power. The reason why the packs want her. She's quite a catch, don't you think?” He asks, looking at Nova from head to toe. That only makes her tip her chin.
I almost forget that she is nothing less than a dragon beneath all that calm.
The both of us stand there as I try to make a decision on what to do. I know that Nova is going to follow me this time. All the energy is gone from her eyes. It doesn't matter if she is trying to be strong and tipping her chin.
“Anyway,” the broker says, pulling me out of my thoughts. “This fight was nothing less than a test run. Too bad my men had to die. But I was just busy confirming Nova's value. And she is worth ten times more. I might just increase my price.”
“I'll pay you for her,” I say, and Nova turns to look at me.
“I'm not willing to be bought by you,” she spits. I can tell that she is still angry about what happens at the pack.
“I have a deal for you,” the broker says. “Hand Nova over to me, and I'll give you something in return. The cure for your curse.”
The statement lands like a bomb in my chest. Nova takes a step away from me, and I can feel it. She is already feeling bad about my hesitation.
“No,” I say, raising my voice slightly.
The broker's face doesn't change. Instead, he seems to smile more. “You will reconsider,” he says calmly.
Then he slowly turns around, and that is when I see something that looks nothing less than a detonator in his hand.
He looks over his shoulders, right at me before he presses the button.
Before I even know what is happening the building starts to shake, and walls are beginning to collapse.
