CHAPTER 23 NOVA'S POV I have to find a way out of this. I do not know what I am thinking as I head towards the place where Cassian takes me the last time. I have been trying to memorize it the whole time. Cassian has barely spent any time in bed with me, and I do not know how I am supposed to feel about it. It is not supposed to matter, but I end up feeling more attached than I am supposed to be. And a part of me is already craving to go back to the human world. For the first time in years, I am actually craving to see my brother again. My hands are shaking slightly, as I bring them up to knock. “Come in,” someone screams from inside, and I shakily push the door open. The smell of different chemicals immediately hits me. I spot them on one of the large tables, bringing out steam. The priestess is covered in a white dress, and she looks at me. Her beads seem to move with her, and I can tell that she is more than glad to see me. Her eyes are immediately fixed on my feet. “Are you feeling better now, Luna?” She asks, and it is getting harder to breathe. No one has actually called me a Luna since when I came to the pack. And now that I hear it from her, a part of me seems to like it. “Yes, I am,” I whisper. “I only feel tired.” She gives me a small smile, as she goes back to looking at one of the bowls that are in front of her. “Considering how much power you've been using to scare people around you, I won't be shocked.” I find myself staring at my flip flops. “I didn't mean to scare them. It just happens. And I'm shocked that you aren't scared.” She c***s an eyebrow at me. “What's there to be scared of? You're just a little girl. Scared of what she is. Scared that she's going to hurt other people. And my husband was just like you.” That statement catches my attention more than anything. I snap my eyes in her direction. “What are you talking about?” I ask. “You said the last ones of my kind were dead.” It is weird calling them my kind, but at least it makes me feel like I am worth something. It makes me feel less of a mistake. “And they are. Your parents are gone, and so is my mate. We didn't have any kids. And then the Alpha makes me priestess. To make me feel useful.” I do not know if I am imagining it, but her throat is starting to close up, and her voice is shaking. “That's enough,” I quickly say, and she gives me a small smile. “It's okay. I don't feel bad talking about things like this.” I find myself swallowing hard. “Cassian has a curse,” I say, and she c***s an eyebrow at me. “Did one of the pack members go blabbing their mouths?” She asks. She does not want to tell me, and I can feel it. “The broker,” I say without hesitation. “He told me everything. He was about to give Cassian the cure. In exchange for me.” The priestess pauses what she is doing, and turns to look at me. “The alpha didn't agree to give you away?” She asks, and I shake my head slowly. A small smile appears on her lips. “He's really fallen then.” I do not know if I am supposed to pretend that I did not hear her properly, but it does not even matter at this point. I take a step towards her. I cannot ignore the fact that I feel the most alive at the lair. Without all the humming underneath my skin. “What is the curse about?” I ask calmly, and she presses her lips into a thin line. “Well, Cassian's grandfather was nothing less than a womanizer. He got different girls pregnant, and once they tried to challenge him, or wanted to become his mate, he had a habit of having them killed. “But there was a particular lady, that laid a curse on him. And swore that all the second sons of his generation were going to die a few days after they clocked the ripe age of thirty.” I swallow hard. I do not even know what to expect. But a womanizing grandfather is the last thing that I would have thought of. “Has the curse manifested so far?” I ask, and she gives me a small nod. “Cassian's father died the same way.” That is when the whole thing suddenly makes sense to me. “Cassian has an older brother?” I ask, and she seems to tremble just a bit, before nodding at me. “He does. And Cassian will be thirty in just a few months. The pack members are scared as well, but they can't bring themselves to say it. He is the first good Alpha that the pack has had in years. And we don't want to lose him.” I watch her as she brings a hand up to her eyes, wiping away the tears. These people care about Cassian. They do not want to lose what they love, and I cannot deny the fact that I know exactly how it feels. I swallow hard again. “What is it going to take to put an end to the curse? The broker said he could get it. So what is it?” The priestess' eyes seem to widen slightly. “It's too much of a risk for you to take, Nova,” she says, and my own knees buckle. “Why don't you visit everything that you love first? Then you can come back after you've made your decision.” At the mention of the things that I love, my mind immediately goes to my little brother. I have not spoken to him in what seems to be ages. But at that moment, the only thing I want to do is touch him one more time. I do not even know what I am getting into to begin with. But I know that there is no way I am allowing Cassian to lose his life all over some stupid curse.
