CHAPTER 33
NOVA'S POV
I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel. Am I hurt that my mom was showing Nate everything about her werewolf side and managed to hide it from me until her death? Yes. I’m so f*****g hurt.
Tears sting my eyes, but I don’t let them fall until we get to the room.
I immediately turn Nate around, making him look at me. He c***s an eyebrow.
“What did you mean by what you said out there?” I ask, and he shrugs.
“I said what I saw. What I grew up on.”
“Mom was a werewolf?” I ask, and he nods.
“She said it countless times. Just not in front of you.”
Wow.
I don’t know if I’m supposed to feel left out, but it already shows who her favorite child was.
A painful smile spreads across my face as I look away.
“Very well then,” I say, and he frowns.
“Is there something bothering you?” he asks, and I shake my head.
“There’s nothing for you to bother about. You like the room, don’t you?”
He looks around, and I don’t miss the amazed look on his face. The room is a thousand times bigger than the one we had back at home. At the same time, it’s bigger than my little apartment.
It’s weird that he thinks our mom being a werewolf is normal. He’s already used to seeing werewolves fight.
“Get some rest. I’ll call you out later for lunch.”
So far, I’ve had dinner in my own room. But I’m sure there’s a dining table somewhere. If I’m not going back to the city, then I have to get used to the pack. They have to get used to seeing me.
Nate gives a small nod, and I don’t even head back to my room to strip out of my dress. The first thing I do is head towards the priestess’ lair.
I knock, already craving the warmth the place provides.
“Come in,” her familiar voice calls out, and I push the door open. The warmth greets me just as I expect.
“You’re back?” she asks, looking over at me with a small smile. “Well, that was quick.”
“You expected me to waste years making a decision?”
“I expected you to make a decision. One that’s very similar to the one the Alpha’s mother made.”
I frown. “Cassian’s father was a second child as well?” I ask, and she nods.
“Sadly enough. And his end was closer than people thought it would be. To be honest, they didn’t expect the curse to manifest.”
I lick my lips. I’m not going to make the same decision Cassian’s mom made. But I’m willing to hear what she did.
Was she strong? Or was she willing to let go of everything?
“What decision did she make?”
“She made sure to conceive before the old Alpha died. And she gave birth to two. Unfortunately, your mate was the second one.”
The words sting more than they should. Cassian hasn’t even talked about his older brother the whole time. I don’t know what I’m supposed to think about their relationship. Maybe things are slightly strained.
I don’t want to make any guesses.
“And the Alpha just agreed to it?” I ask, and she c***s her head to the side.
“The Luna didn’t want him knowing that there was even a cure. She was more than comfortable with him dying. At least she got to rule the pack for a while.
“But then, she knew that Alpha Cassian was going to die eventually. And she had her favorite—the one that was going to live. And the Alpha’s life was never normal.”
That explains why he understands the things Nate and I are going through.
The priestess finally looks up at me again. “Have you made your decision?” she asks, and I shake my head.
“I can’t make a decision,” I whisper. “Not like this.”
She nods. “Good thing you’re taking your time. Now, why are you here?”
“My brother. He’s here. He has always known that my mom was a werewolf.”
She c***s an eyebrow. “It’s nothing new. It’s normal for her to expose herself to her mate or to her children. It’s a shame that she didn’t tell you about it.”
“Do you think she hated me?” I ask, and she presses her lips into a thin line, flipping a page of her book.
On the page, there’s a picture of a black wolf with red eyes. She turns it to face me, and I can see flashes of the wolf in the woods, with its head raised to the sky as it howls.
“Your mother must have heard the stories of the past wolves. The ones who knew the kind of powers they had. The pride that came afterwards. She was preparing your brother instead. So that he wouldn’t be scared when he sees you transform.”
At the mention of what my mom wanted to do, I start to hate her less for leaving us. She didn’t have a choice.
She was killed along with my dad.
But I can’t deny the fact that she prepared us for everything that was coming our way. She taught us every survival skill we knew. That was why we were never willing to fit in with the other kids.
Nate and I are not like other kids. We are special. We are different.
I look up at her with just one question in mind.
“Is Nate the same? Is he a werewolf?”
The priestess doesn’t even hesitate to shake her head. “Your mom didn’t hesitate to put all her genes in you. Her stubbornness. Her willfulness. Her strength. Her wolf. All of it is in you.”
She steps forward, placing a hand against my cheek. “And that’s what makes you stronger, my girl. And dangerous as well.”
I give her a firm nod. “That’s all I need to know,” I say, and with that, I head out of the lair.
The moment I step outside, I bump into Cassian.
He narrows his eyes at me, and I can tell that he’s back to being protective.
“I was looking for you around the pack. The other pack members told me that they saw you heading to the priestess’ lair.”
“Yes,” I say, tipping my chin slightly. “I went to see her. We had quite some important things to talk about.”
I can tell he’s about to ask more questions. Either way, he doesn’t push it.
“Come on, let’s go and get Nate. Lunch is ready.”
If I had any grudge towards Nate before, I can’t even find it as we head back towards the pack palace.
“He didn’t eat that much back at home,” Cassian tells me, and I nod at him.
We’re just about to walk in when he holds my hand, pulling me back.
“And we’ll have to talk about what you went to the priestess to do.”
Everything in me wants to snap and tell him that it’s none of his business. But I give him a small nod instead, swallowing hard.
“Of course,” I whisper.
