CHAPTER 34

CHAPTER 34 NOVA'S POV I fetch Nate from his room within seconds, and he follows me back to the dining room, where I see the last person I’m looking forward to seeing. Our one and only Jason. I c**k my head to the side as I look at him. He rolls his eyes and looks away. I sit down at the table, right opposite him, with Cassian at the head of the table. Nate sits beside me, already asking the maids to put more food on his plate. “The kid came with quite an appetite. You haven't been feeding him?” Jason asks, and I feel my throat close up. If I’m being honest, Nate’s bones already speak for him. They stick out from his shoulders, and his arms are skinny. It doesn’t really help that he’s wearing the new clothes Cassian got for him. But at least he’s clean. He doesn’t carry that slightly noticeable orphanage smell he came with. “That’s none of your business,” Cassian says, and I can’t help but smile at him. The way he tries to protect Nate is out of this world, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get tired of seeing that. “Already protective?” Jason asks, and I don’t miss the scoff that follows. “Maybe. Just maybe you should learn their actual history before you get involved with this family.” Cassian looks over at Jason, and I do the same. What does he know? “I know everything I need to,” Cassian says with a small smile. That manages to keep Jason quiet for a while. He raises his hand, stopping the maid from pouring his orange juice. He takes a sip, setting the cup down on the table. It’s almost like Nate isn’t even listening. He’s just humming, living in his own world. “Don’t pay attention to anything he says,” I whisper to him, and he turns to look at me, shrugging. “I’ve learned to zone out when unnecessary statements are being made. You don’t have to worry about it.” Ha. Maybe Nate is the best match for Jason. I can barely stop myself from smiling. Who would have thought? It’s rude for him to say something like that, but at this point, it doesn’t matter. And even Jason doesn’t look like he takes offense. His eyes fix on me, and I stop my cutlery on my plate. I’ve barely taken a full bite of my food. The aroma is nice, but I’m not sure I’m in the mood for it. “You missed me, didn’t you?” I ask, and he smirks, looking away. “You wish,” he says, swiping his cheek with his tongue. “I like the little boy. Now you can go ahead and tell me exactly who he is.” “He’s my brother. My little brother.” He sighs, running a hand through his face. But I can tell he’s pretending. “There are more of you?” he asks, blinking as he looks between me and Nate. “Who would have thought?” Either way, he extends his hand to Nate. Nate finally looks up from his food and shakes it briefly before pulling back. I look over at Cassian, and he gives me a small nod. “I think they would be good together,” he says through the mind link, and I try to focus on his voice. I don’t know how to properly use the mind link yet. Cassian makes it look so easy. And for the first time in my life, I find myself wanting to be like him in that aspect. Maybe it’s about time I learn a few things from him. And Jason as well. If I’m going to learn anything, the first thing I have to do is push the little feud aside. Every other voice fades, and I can feel Cassian. “I’m waiting,” he says through the mind link again, and I feel my throat tighten. “Look at me.” I lift my head, and he smirks. “Good girl,” he mutters, and I feel my thighs press together on their own. Fuck, no. Not here. “Yes,” I finally answer without moving my lips. “They would do very well together.” Cassian’s smile widens. This time, he reaches across the table and places his hand over mine. “Good girl,” he says again, and I swallow hard. He doesn’t know the effect he has, does he? “Thank you,” I manage to whisper before picking up my cutlery again and forcing food into my mouth. By the time I snap out of it, I can hear Nate and Jason talking again. “Are you done gossiping about me through the mind link?” Jason asks, and I c**k an eyebrow at him. “I would rather die than get involved in something like that.” He smirks, his eyes still on me as he takes another sip of his juice. It’s quite shocking that he’s even having juice. But then again, I don’t want to jump to conclusions that he’s a good man. He doesn’t give off those vibes. Maybe that’s why Nate already takes a liking to him. Because he doesn’t look normal like the rest of us. The four of us at that table… there’s something about us. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels it. “We’ll see, Nova,” he says calmly. I look over at Cassian, and I can tell he’s having more than enough fun watching us have that little banter. I can’t deny that I’m having a little fun as well. The past few weeks have been something else, and I was genuinely dreading them. But now that I’m sitting at that table, the pack is starting to feel like home… even if just for a while. I don’t know how long the feeling is going to last. I’m just settling back into myself when I hear the roaring of motorcycle engines. Cassian’s eyes narrow immediately, and he looks over at Jason. Jason’s face is expressionless. I wait for one of them to say something, but they don’t. Just as I’m waiting, one of the maids walks into the dining room, her head bowed. I can see the way her forehead is creased in a frown, even though she keeps her gaze fixed on the floor. “There’s someone here to see you, Alpha,” she says, and Cassian looks at her. “Who is it?” he asks, and she shakes her head slightly. “I would prefer you come and see the person yourself, Alpha.” “Fine,” Cassian says, getting to his feet. “Take Nate to his room.” “Why?” I ask immediately, but Jason is already on his feet as well. Cassian looks at Nate. “Don’t come out of your room. Understood?” His tone is firmer now, and Nate nods. Something is off. And I’m not going to relax until I find out what it is.
