CHAPTER 8
Cassian's POV
My head is hurting by mid-afternoon. I spent the whole morning asking different people if they know anything about the leak. It is nothing less than an interrogation. Just as expected, they don't know anything. Or so they claim.
I can't help but wonder if the old alliances I have with other biker clubs is the reason behind it.
Either way, Nova is under me now. She is somewhere I could easily watch her.
More than anything, I am waiting for the council to arrive. Just as the thought crosses my mind, their chariot makes its way into the compound.
Elder Xavier is the first to step out. He narrows his eyes at me, but he bows as expected.
I can barely hold back my smirk. They can hate me all they want. I am still the Alpha.
I lead them to the Council room, and they take their seats, while I take mine at the top of the room.
“My omega said you wanted to see me,” I say, and they nod.
Elder Finneas stands up. “Alpha, we've heard about the… human girl that you brought into the pack.”
Nova isn't human. Humans can't do what she can.
“And?” I ask immediately.
“Bringing humans here is dangerous. Especially if she knows your secret.”
“She knows. She's my mate. And she has been marked already.”
Gasps and murmurs go around. I don't care.
“Alright then,” Elder Xavier quickly says. “But you should know that she is unstable. We can smell her from here.”
I tip my nose in the air, and I can smell her as well. But that is only because of the mate bond.
Vanilla and flowers.
But the elders? It is weird that they can sense her.
“How can you tell that she's unstable?”
Xavier licks his lips. “She's unregistered blood. And she's nothing less than a threat to you and the pack.”
I straighten up in my seat. “That's impossible,” I mutter.
“He's right,” Finneas says, supporting Xavier.
“I'm going to need more reasons why she seems unstable.”
“Her type has been wiped off the face of the earth years ago. She shouldn't be here. It's a miracle that she even survived.”
I run my hands through my hair, but they are not even done talking.
“It is important that you also know that people or her kind were known to tip the balance between packs. I fear she might do the same to you.”
“She wouldn't do that,” I say. But as the words leave my mouth, my mind is already drifting to the amount of times that she was attacked only yesterday when she came to the pack. She couldn't have been doing it purposely, but her presence might have been enough to cause damage.
Fuck, f**k, f**k.
“What are the next steps?” I ask, looking at each and every one of them. They are the only ones with the answers at that point.
“You can hand her over to us,” Elder Xavier says. There is this glint on his eyes that makes me feel goosebumps on my skin.
They are going to get rid of her. I can feel it. The way they look at each other.
“It's just for quality control,” Finneas says, and he smirks before he adds. “For containment.”
“No,” I say, immediately getting on my feet. She isn't safe, but that’s a riskier option.
“But Alpha-”
“But nothing,” I say. “The meeting is over. If you want Nova, then I would like to watch you drag her away.”
I can feel their eyes on me, as I head out of the council room. I head back to my house, and straight into Nova's room.
I wait for her to complain about me not knocking. But she doesn't say anything. It is when I see her shoulders shake that I hurry towards her, making her look at me.
I take in the streaks of tears making their way down her face. And then, at the injury on her leg.
“What happened?” I ask, immediately gritting my teeth. She can't have hurt herself in the room.
“Jason,” she whispers, and I close my eyes. I told her not to leave the room, but I am not going to get angry at that. For now.
I’m about to get up, when she quickly holds me back.
“No, don't hurt him,” she quickly says. Her voice is shaking, and I try not to show any more affection than I already have.
“Then tell me what happened,” I say, lowering my voice to make it sound calm. Anything not to scare her.
“He challenged me to a duel and I took up the challenge.”
There is something in her voice that tells me she is lying. She can barely meet my eyes. I am going to settle that later.
I quickly head to the bathroom, taking out the first aid box, and leaning down in front of her.
I quickly take out a swab of cotton wool, before soaking it in spirit. I dab it against her injury, and she hisses, wrapping a hand in my shirt.
“Shhh,” I whisper, and she gives me a small nod. Her eyes are closed the whole time, and she fists more of my shirt, until I wrap it up in a bandage.
It takes a lot for me not to ask her to treat herself. But then, she is already exhausted. I know just how much power such things can take.
“Are you okay?” I ask, and she nods.
“What did the elder council say?” She asks, and her eyes search mine.
What am I supposed to tell her?
My fingers find her mate bond, and I almost apologize for the whole thing. I should have just let her go.
Nova is still looking at me.
“Tell me what they said. And don't lie.” Her voice is firmer. There is no use of lying..
“They want to take you away. For containment,” I say, and I can feel her breath hitch.
