CHAPTER 39
NOVA'S POV
I look around Cassian’s room one more time, and I can’t help but smile. His room is the one place that I hadn’t even prepared myself to stay. But I am there anyway. And there is no running away from that.
I am there to stay. Unless something goes wrong. And I am always bracing myself for anything at all.
Nate is in his room, and the maids inform me that he is with Jason. I hear a knock at the door, and I quickly open it, hoping that it is Cassian. It is Jason instead.
I roll my eyes, and he groans.
“He has finally brought you to his room?” he asks, and I fold my hands across my chest.
“Do you have a problem with that?” I ask. “Are you going to ask him to throw me out?”
Jason presses his lips into a thin line. “He wouldn’t listen to me. You’ve got him wrapped around your finger.”
There is something about his tone that makes me go weak.
“I don’t,” I say, and Jason seems to scoff.
“Well, just… don’t hurt him. Please. He’s been through so much already.”
My throat closes up even further.
“I don’t want to hurt him.”
Jason gives me a small smile that doesn’t come from his mind. “You know, you’re different. Of a different breed. And I’m sure that you know about the curse. You don’t have to pretend in front of me.”
My knees buckle. “I don’t have to pretend about anything,” I say calmly, and he gives me a small nod.
“I’m glad we’re on the same page on this. Just take care of Cassian.”
“You were supposed to take care of Nate, weren’t you?” I ask, and he gives me a small nod.
“He’s asleep. And of course, I wanted to take your permission. He’s supposed to be getting some training. Not just as a man, but as a member of the pack. I’ll be handling him personally.”
“He’s not a member of the pack.”
Jason c***s an eyebrow. “He is. He very much is. I guess I’ve already gotten your permission. You can tell Cassian that I came to see him.”
With that, he turns around and heads down the hallway.
I have just closed the door when Cassian pushes it open. His eyes look bloodshot, and he looks around the room.
There is a small smile on his lips. “You moved in,” he says, but there is something that sounds off in his voice. Something that doesn’t sit well with me.
“I did. You don’t have a problem with it, do you?” I ask, taking a step towards him, and I can smell the whiskey on his breath. “What happened to you?”
He shakes his head, looking away. “Nothing happened to me,” he says, and I hold his cheeks, making him look at me.
“Do you trust me?” I ask, and he presses his lips into a thin line as he nods without hesitation.
“I just don’t trust what’s about to happen to you.”
I know what he is talking about immediately. Everything in me tells me that it has to do with his brother, and I can’t push the thought away.
It is all about control. About the mate bond. About his choices.
As he turns, I can swear that I see the fear written all over him. My heart does a little flip. This man is scared of losing me.
And that is what matters like hell. He doesn’t want to lose me, and I don’t want to lose him either.
The pack is worth it so far. Nate is happy here. They want to make him one of them, and not even one of the women dares approach me anymore.
It doesn’t make sense that I don’t have any friends just yet, but a part of me likes it.
I am going to be okay.
I take a step towards Cassian, cupping his cheeks with both of my hands as I make him look at me.
“Look at me,” I urge, and he finally turns to look at me. I have a small smile on my face as I go on tiptoes. I place my lips against his, and his hands are immediately wrapped around my waist.
I slowly part my lips, and I can taste the whiskey in his mouth. A part of me likes it.
Fuck, I love it.
I wrap my arms around the back of his neck, and he pulls me closer, like he wants to get into my skin.
Cassian leans down slightly, wrapping his hands around my legs, and he carries me up. I wrap my legs around his torso. He is just about to lean in for another kiss, but there is something that feels off.
This time, I am the one that pulls back.
“Are you okay?” Cassian asks, and I press my lips into a thin line as I give him a small nod.
“Something just feels off,” I say. I gesture for him to put me down on the floor, and Cassian does just that. He gives me a slightly worried look.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asks, and I nod at him.
He leans down, placing a kiss on my forehead. “I’ll just go to bed then,” he says, and I watch him as he takes his boots off.
He gets into bed, and I can’t stop myself from lying down beside him. Cassian wraps his arms around me as he pulls me towards him.
Everything about the way he smells feels nothing less than comforting.
But I hate that I am lying there beside him, thinking about things. f**k, I need to stop the wheels in my head from working sometimes.
I do know that Killian being in the pack is only going to make things go south between us. I don’t know how it is going to happen, or when it is going to happen. But I am getting the hindsight.
Cassian pulls me closer, and I can hear his breath steady.
Just as I close my eyes, I see someone watching us.
What is this? Some kind of vision?
I try to pay more attention, and the face finally comes into view.
Beatrice.
I move into a sitting position immediately, and Cassian gets up with a frown.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, and I shake my head.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up,” I whisper, forcing him to lie down again. “I’m just going to the bathroom.”
He c***s an eyebrow. “Are you sure?” he asks, and I give him a small smile that I am so sure doesn’t reach my eyes.
“Yes,” I answer. “I’ll be right back.”
I don’t even wait for him to say a word as I get out of bed. As I get to the bathroom, I spot the golden strips of energy that are coming out of my hands.
No, no.
“Please, stop,” I whisper, already panicking. The last thing I need is to bother anybody else, more than I already do.
Cassian is stressed as hell.
The strips of energy only get worse, and the threads start to get interwoven.
I shakily move my hands towards the tap, and I open it, shakily bringing a handful of water to my face and pouring it over. Anything to keep me calm.
As I look back in the mirror, my eyes are golden.
I take a step back, with my back to the door, as I try to catch my breath. I can feel my heart beat more rapidly in my chest.
“Calm down,” I whisper to myself, as I struggle to take deep breaths.
Sweat drips down my forehead, and I feel my knees slowly go weak as I collapse on the floor.
The second my palm touches the floor, everything slows down.
“What the f**k was that?” I whisper to myself, and the silence of the bathroom answers me.
