CHAPTER 20
CASSIAN'S POV
By the time I walk back into the office, I already have all the people that I trust in the room with me.
Jason and a few other Deltas. They stand up straight the moment I walk into the office. I have a small smile on my face as I walk in.
Nova is in her room, and I make sure to put a guard there on standby. There is no way I am letting her leave my sight. I am going to protect her with everything I have.
I clear my throat as I look at the men in front of me.
“I'm sure you all know why we're here,” I start, and they give me nods.
Once again, Jason is leaning against the wall, with his hands folded in front of him like he would rather be anywhere but in my office, discussing anything about Nova. I don't care.
He is one of the people that I trust. And one of the people whose decision I can take.
“About Nova?” one of the Deltas asks, and I give him a small nod, sitting up.
“She's not safe here. And we just let them take her away. That should be something that won't repeat itself.” I look over at Jason for extra measure, and he looks away. He is in charge of security.
“I suggest we take her somewhere else. They already know where she is. And there's… something about her,” one of them says, and he isn't wrong.
“Where do you suggest we go to keep her safe?” I ask.
I can't deny the fact that even her power is a little too much for her to handle. She still needs to be trained.
In my head, I can hear her whimper again when I touch her.
Fuck, I need control.
Another Delta raises a hand before speaking. “We can't forget the fact that she's the reason why we are being targeted in the first place. Yes, we've been attacked. But not in this way. Not with silver.”
“It was going to happen eventually,” I say calmly.
“You can't ignore the fact he's right,” Jason says, and I narrow my eyes at him. “Ever since she came here, something has gone wrong. Every single day.”
“She's my mate,” I say, leaning back. “And you know how long it took for me to find her.”
“You broke the engagement with Beatrice. She was perfect for you.”
The mention of that name makes me tighten my jaw. Beatrice was my mate. But of course, she didn't think I was good enough. She ended up going for my brother.
And the both of them are happily married now. We both maintain our distance, and it is for the betterment of us both.
Jason is still stuck on her. I can tell that he is more than attached.
“Nova wouldn't even do what Beatrice did.”
“Come on,” he says, throwing his hands in the air. “You don't even know this girl too well.”
I don't care at this point. There is something that connects the both of us. And I can't even place what it is.
We are both broken somehow. But it is more than that.
“Moving her might be the best option,” Jason finally says under his breath, but loud enough for me to hear.
“Handing her over to the pack elders might be the best decision,” one of the omegas speaks up, and I shoot him a look. “Temporarily,” he adds, but it doesn't even matter.
I am not going to hand Nova over to them, and I hate the fact that we are going round and round on this same topic.
“I'm not handing her over to them.”
Jason straightens up. “You know, they're not here for territory. They're here for her. And the elders want to confine her. She's not normal.”
“Do you think I don't know that?” I ask, holding myself back from slamming a fist into the table.
The room goes silent, and I can't hold myself back from bringing a hand to my head, massaging my temples.
Their eyes are on me, and I can feel it. They are waiting for me to make a decision.
The problem is that, I don't even know what I am supposed to do. But everything is going to be in control. It doesn't matter how I manage to do it, but something has to be done.
My authority is still intact. I can feel it in the way the pack members bow down when Nova and I walk past. The way some of them seem to shiver when we walk past.
That doesn't change the fact that most of them think I am crazy for even keeping her at the pack. And some of them might have even started getting more terrified of her than me.
At the same time, my authority is starting to crack at the edges. Jason is starting to challenge me.
Something he would never do when Beatrice was still here. A part of me understands where he is coming from.
But he can't just forget what she actually did.
It is slightly entertaining watching him and Nova go head to head. But at the same time, I don't want it.
“I'll let you all know when I've made a decision,” I say, and they nod, bowing slightly before heading out.
This time, Jason doesn't wait back.
I quickly pour myself a glass of whiskey, and the burning liquid goes down my throat.
A part of me is slowly losing my mind. But maybe… just maybe it is worth it.
The priestess' voice is in my head again, as she tells me that Nova has the cure to my curse.
It is getting hard to swallow at that point. I don't want to use her for what she has. At the same time, I am running out of time.
My wolf suddenly gets alert, and I can feel Nova.
She is awake.
