CHAPTER 51
CASSIAN'S POV
If I wasn't going to lose my mind in a few minutes, I don't know what else is going to happen. There is no telling.
The guards are holding the intruders off pretty well, and I can't deny the fact that even I am proud of what I'm seeing. Jason is doing a great job at the training, and maybe it is right about time that he is rewarded.
“Have you been able to reach Nova?” Jason asks.
Did I mention that it is the exact thing that is driving me crazy? The fact that I don't even know what she is doing. I can barely tell.
The mate bond is weakening by the second, and she isn't replying to any of the mate calls that I am giving her.
Fuck, I should have asked the guards to tie her down in one of the rooms. I should have known that she wouldn't ever stay back at the office. I should have gone to get her the second she stepped her feet out of the office.
I am desperate, and angry at the same time. It is the wrong combination at that point.
I swear to the goddess, if I have my hands on her after now, she is going to receive a spank or two.
“Go ahead and find her,” Jason says, and I look over at him.
“What do you mean?” I ask. “I can't leave all of you here.”
He seems to roll his eyes, as he pushes his sword into the bodies of the intruders.
“We are holding them off well. Go and find her before she does something drastic.” He looks genuinely worried.
I don't think I am ever going to hear those words from Jason. But what do I know? He is probably just worried about Nate not having an older sister. I don't need him to tell me just how much he loves Nate.
I am already leaving the battleground to find Nova. I still turn back to make sure that nothing goes wrong. They could need my help at any time.
Nate is safe in the palace. I can feel that. But I can't tell, when it comes to Nova.
I hurry to the last place where she was standing. I spot the bodies on the floor, practically frozen in the air. Their skins are starting to fry.
She has been there. I can feel her energy. As I stand there, I can sense her. But once again, the energy is weak. The bond is weak as well.
It is almost like she is moving farther away from me. But to where?
My chest tightens.
No Nova.
“Seen her?” Jason asks through the mind link, like he can sense that something is wrong.
I don't even hesitate as I give my next orders. “Find her!”
The guards scatter immediately, and Jason joins me where I am standing. He looks at the intruders that are slowly turning to fried meat.
“She did this?” He asks, and I give him a small nod. “Can you feel her energy? Or the mate bond?”
“The mate bond is pulsing. But slowly. And it's moving.”
I turn, following the pulsing that I can get. It feels nothing less than a weak signal.
Jason is behind me the whole time. The pulsing is going towards the part of the pack where I saw her the last time.
I can feel my heart accelerate. She isn't supposed to be there. The last time that I saw her there, she was barely herself when I led her back to the main pack.
The last thing I want is for the priestess to look at me like I can't take care of her. And considering just how much the priestess loves her husband, she loves Nova the same way.
Just as I get to the entrance of the woods, the power suddenly stops pulsing. And I can feel something else.
“She used power around here recently,” Jason says, before I even say anything.
“Yes,” I answer. It is almost overpowering. Like something is supporting the power. Nova couldn't possibly bring forth that much power. Unless I've been looking down on her this whole time.
I take a step further, attempting to go into the woods. That is when the power hits even more. At that point, I am more than confused. Something is trying to throw me off.
The power is either coming from her, or within the woods.
Even Jason is confused. I can tell, from the way he is looking around. Like he is waiting for her to jump out from somewhere, and attack him.
They are sworn enemies anyway.
“I don't think she's anywhere around here,” he says, and I think the same at that point.
“She's not,” I agree.
The pack still smells of fur, metal and blood. No sign of Nova. The guards have already killed off the intruders. She should have been easier to find.
But she is outside. Maybe she isn't weak, but she is alone. She barely has any control over her powers.
The same powers are the same ones masking her scent.
I run my hands through my hair. I am supposed to keep her safe. If not for myself, I am supposed to protect her for Nate.
“Don't bother yourself,” Jason says calmly, placing a hand on my shoulder. “She'll turn up anytime soon. The guards will find her.”
I want to believe him, but I am not even sure that Nova is anywhere in the pack. If she is, then where?
She isn't being taken away.
If they can't find her, she has left by herself. With her own legs.
Fuck, I hate that I am having thoughts like that. I just want her safe and sound. With me.
“Any signs of her around?” I ask the guards through the mind link, and each one responds with a negative answer.
Her energy is still pulsing in the air.
“What are you doing, Nova?” I whisper to myself.
