The Kiss They Didnt Plan

Chapter 7: The Kiss They Didn’t Plan The gala was held at the Grand Bellagio Hotel — a towering glass monument to wealth, privilege, and appearances. Leila stood by the floor-length mirror in their hotel suite, smoothing down her deep red dress. It hugged her waist perfectly, the slit at her leg dramatic but elegant. Her makeup was subtle but flawless, thanks to the stylist Damian insisted on sending. “You look…” Damian’s voice broke into her thoughts. She turned. He was standing at the door in a crisp black tuxedo, bowtie perfectly tied, collar sharp. His gaze ran over her slowly, from her heels to the soft waves of her hair. “Beautiful,” he said simply. Leila raised an eyebrow. “Genuinely, or for the cameras?” His lips twitched. “Both.” The gala was already full by the time they arrived, escorted by two bodyguards and instantly surrounded by flashes of light. Damian reached for her hand without thinking — or maybe he did think about it too much. Either way, his fingers laced with hers as they stepped onto the red carpet. Leila smiled for the cameras, practiced and poised, but inside she was buzzing. He didn’t let go of her hand once. Inside, they mingled. Wealthy CEOs, politicians, and influencers tried to corner Damian for deals and gossip, but his hand never strayed far from the small of Leila’s back. Every time someone asked how they met, he would tell a slightly different version of the same story — but always end it with the same line: “She makes me feel… human.” Leila wasn’t sure when that line stopped sounding fake. Later in the evening, the two of them stepped onto the balcony to breathe. The city lights stretched far below, twinkling like stars. Leila sighed, leaning on the railing. “I can’t keep doing this.” Damian turned to her. “Doing what?” “Pretending it doesn’t feel real sometimes.” He said nothing. Then: “It does feel real. Doesn’t it?” She turned to him. Their faces were close now, the air between them electric. The sounds of the gala faded. So did the lights. All that was left was him. Her. And a thousand unspoken things in between. Leila’s heart raced. She should have stepped back. Instead, she whispered, “Damian—” And that’s when he kissed her. It wasn’t staged. It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t part of the contract. His lips pressed against hers like he’d been waiting years — not weeks — for this. One hand curled at her waist, the other behind her neck, pulling her closer. And Leila? She kissed him back. There was no audience, no cameras, no performance. Just heat. Confusion. Want. When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless. Leila stared at him, dazed. “That wasn’t in the script.” Damian’s voice was low, rough. “I know.” They stood there, in silence, hearts pounding. Neither of them said it, but they both felt it. Something had changed — and it was too late to undo it now.
