“Meet at six?” Colt said into the phone, discussing our date for the evening.
“Sounds great, see you then!” I said eagerly before saying our goodbyes and hanging up the phone. We hadn't wanted to wait for a weekend and agreed to meet on a weeknight so we could see each other sooner.
The rest of the day went by incredibly slow. I had so many things on my mind – was what I was wearing fine? Would I have time to do my make up before I left work so I didn't look like a slob? I was thankful that I had my own office and would be able to shut the door for some time to get ready. The date was cutting it close to the time I usually left work, but since we both worked mornings, we needed to get home at a decent hour.
My stomach tied itself in knots all day long. I was nervous and excited. Colt was a good looking man. He had light blonde hair and green eyes. He was your typical frat boy with a perfect body and good looks. He had majored in engineering and had a well-paying union job. He had told me about his luxury apartment nearby his job.
Toward the end of the day, I shut my office door and used a small make-up mirror to put on my make up and touch up the curls in my hair. I grabbed my bag and decided to make a stop in the restroom to take advantage of the good lighting and the large mirrors to double check that I looked alright. At this point, even if I didn't, I had no time to go home and change.
I walked through the mostly empty building and made a stop in the bathroom. I had a mid-length, short sleeved blue dress that hugged close to my hour-glass figure. My long brown hair was curled and left down. When I decided I looked as best as I could get, I exited the bathroom. I was looking down at my phone to let Colt know I was on the way when I bumped into a hard figure.
“Woah, sorry! You look great.” Shane said. I was mortified realizing that I had just bumped into the CEO of my company.
“Jeez, sorry! Thank you, by the way.” I said with a smile and a flush of red.
I tried to shake off the embarrassment as I exited the building and walked into the streets of the city. I headed to the destination as nervous as before and praying things went well.
I saw Colt standing outside the bar. When I saw him, he gave me a huge, happy smile and waved me over. I approached him and we gave each other a hug which came naturally without any awkwardness, which was surprising for someone I had just met a few nights ago.
“You look amazing!” Colt said.
“You, too.” I complimented back with a smile.
He led me inside by the hand and we picked a small table in the corner of the bar to avoid the rowdiness of the crowd surrounding the bar itself. The bartender came over. I ordered a glass of wine, and Colt ordered a beer. We sipped our drinks and slipped into quiet conversation.
We talked as if we had known each other for years. I loved that he listened to me so intensely and remembered things I had said earlier in the conversation. As I was speaking, he would catch on that it related to something I had said an hour ago and tie it all in together. I would talk about my mother and something she did, and he remembered I'd said she was a perfectionist and commented that it made sense she would do that, since she was a perfectionist. I tried to return the favor by making a mental note that his brother was doctor, and teased him later on when he complained about his back hurting that he literally had a doctor in the family who he never brought the problem up to.
We started taking the conversation more seriously. We talked about our jobs and how we feared we may grow tired of what we were doing since we found our dream jobs so young. I joked that there was always time for career change later, and maybe I'd end up switching to be a nurse or a teacher when I was old. He talked about how he had always hoped to have a wife who was a teacher because he wanted a large family and would love for her to have such convenient hours and time off during the summer to be with their kids. We both said that would work out just perfectly.
By the end of the night, I felt like we had really connected. I hadn't been in very many serious relationships, but when I dated, I typically liked to move quickly. Small talk and casual dating seemed a waste. I was getting into my late twenties and wanted to settle down.
I kept that information to myself until Colt brought it up. He finally asked what I was looking for in general while dating. I was honest and told him that I was looking for something serious and long term, and that at my age, I was over it with one night stands and dating apps. He agreed. He said he felt relieved because at our age, a lot of women were still looking to be casual or sleep around. He was looking for a connection and to meet someone he felt comfortable bringing around his very judgmental parents.
When we said our goodbyes, I was almost sad. We'd had such a fantastic night and I never wanted it to end. I finally ran home and gushed to my friends, we collapse on the couch with snacks as I told them all about it.
