The next morning, Shane was prompt at picking me up. I loaded my luggage into the backseat of his car and felt a little embarrassed seeing my mountains of luggage next to his small bag.
“Did you plan on living there?” Shane joked with a laugh.
“You never know.” I said, returning the playful banter.
We drove to the airport talking about what the trip typically looked like. He was explaining all of the different companies that would be there and the importance of being on their good side. Some of them were currently supplying our product or could potentially begin to in the future. Some were our clients and it was our job to make sure they were impressed.
We got into the airport and went through the steps of getting our luggage taken care of, getting checked in and boarding the plane. Shane and I were sitting next to each other and he graciously offered me the window seat.
“Any updates on that situation with your ex?” Shane asked me.
“Yeah, I uh, got roped back in. We started a friendship again and started hanging out more and more, went to his house like the absolute i***t that I am. His girlfriend walked in as we were about to be kissing.” I explained.
“Well, you should know you are worth way more than something like that.” Shane said.
“You?” I asked.
“Hmm?”
“Any updates with YOUR ex?”
“No. Haven't spoken to her.” Shane said.
The rest of the flight was more of the same chatter. We talked work, family, love and life. It was nice to have a casual discussion with Shane. He seemed like an easy going person and overall was enjoyable to be around.
We eventually got to our hotel. I freshened up, put on a professional outfit, touched up my hair and make up and went back out to meet Shane. We had a huge meeting with a lot of big important people. There was some business language I didn't understand, but I kept up as best as I could. Shane did the talking and I pretended to be engaged in the conversation.
After the meeting, I expected to go back to our rooms and get some rest.
“I'm sorry you had to sit through that.” Shane said.
“No worries.” I said with a smile. I was going to lie and say that I was interested, but I knew he'd catch me in that lie.
“Would you like to have drinks?” Shane asked.
“Hell yeah. That's the most interesting thing that's happened all day.” I said.
We both smiled and he offered his arm to lead me to the bar. The contact was a little strange. I knew he was being polite, but it felt weird to hold on to his arm as we walked. We took seats together at the bar.
We ordered drink after drink as we talked. We were getting drunk and rowdy. No one else seemed to mind as our conversation got louder and our words slurred.
I barely remembered getting into my hotel room. I woke up feeling pretty awful after drinking so much the night before. I text Shane to check on him, and a knock at my door answered the question for me. He looked bright eyed and bushy tailed, not effected at all by the alcohol consumption.
He offered me water and medicine. He sat in the rolling chair and I slumped in bed.
“I'm glad today is a rest day.” I whined.
“How long has it been since you had a rest day?” Shane asked.
“God even longer than it's been since I had sex.” I blurted out. “Sorry, that was inappropriate.”
“I feel that. It's been a long time for me, on both accounts.” He laughed.
We eventually felt better. Shane went to his room to get swim shorts, I changed into a bikini.
We went out to the poolside bar to lay in the sun and have drinks. It was a relaxing day. We swam, we laid out in beach chairs with drinks, and we laughed.
We ended our night again at the hotel's bar. As the drinks were getting to us... the same topic kept coming up: s*x. It had been a while for both of us. There was tension in the air.
Shane and I weren't extremely close, but our extra meetings had really helped.
