CHAPTER 21
A little before ten, Delaney called it a night. To her surprise, the kids actually said good bye to her—“And not in a way that makes it sound like they’re shoving you out the door,” Connor muttered as he walked her to her car. The southern night had fallen soft and humid around them. More fireflies were out, drifting through the close woods. It made the back yard feel magical. “I think that’s a first,” he added, seeming more like him and less like the moody guy she’d spent the last few hours with.
Plus…first. It made her heart flutter. For a second, Delaney thought her voice would crack when she said, “Yeah, well. I’d say it’s a first for me too. I don’t usually break out a water fight when I meet people, but after today? I think it was exactly what I needed.”
