Chapter 5: The Enemy’s Game

I should have known better than to step into that office. The moment I received the invitation, I knew it was a trap. Charles Vale didn’t summon people for tea and friendly conversation. He played a different game, one where the stakes were always high, and the consequences were always lethal. But even knowing that, I couldn’t resist. I had to hear him out. After everything he had taken from me, I owed it to myself to face him, to look him in the eyes as he tried to manipulate me into submission. I walked through the doors of his office with my head held high, my heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. The room was everything I expected it to be: cold, calculated, and designed to intimidate. The walls were lined with dark wood, and the floor-to-ceiling windows framed the city below like an empire to be conquered. Charles sat behind his massive desk, the master of it all, his fingers steepled as if he were already anticipating my next move. "Elyra," he said with that smirk of his that never failed to make my blood boil. "It’s been a while. I’m glad you could make it." I didn’t sit. I couldn’t. Not in front of him. Not when I knew what he had done to my family, what he had done to me. "I’m not here to waste time with pleasantries, Charles," I said, my voice cold and clipped. "You want something from me. So, cut to the chase." His smile widened, and he leaned back in his chair, fingers still locked together. "Straight to business. I like that." He paused for a moment as if weighing his words carefully. "You’re making a mess of your father’s legacy, Elyra. You’ve been reckless, and it’s hurting your brand and your family. But I can fix that. I can put things back in order, make you a part of the Vale empire again, where you belong." His words were smooth, too smooth. He was trying to lure me in with promises of power and control. A seat at the table. But I knew better. He didn’t care about me or my family. He cared about one thing—winning. "I’ll never be part of your empire," I replied, my tone sharp. "You destroyed everything I ever cared about. You took my father’s company, you humiliated me, and now you want me to join forces with you? It’s laughable." Charles’ expression didn’t falter. He was used to rejection. But his gaze darkened, a flicker of something dangerous flashing in his eyes. "You’re playing a dangerous game, Elyra. Do you really think you can win this battle? You’re alone now. Your allies are few, your resources are limited, and your reputation is in tatters. I’m offering you a chance to rebuild—if you come back into the fold." I could feel the weight of his words pressing down on me, but I refused to let him see how much they affected me. I had come too far to let him control me again. "I don’t need you or your empire," I said, my voice steady despite the fire burning inside me. "I’m building my own empire. And when it’s ready, you’ll wish you had never crossed me." Charles chuckled, leaning forward in his chair, his eyes narrowing. "You think you can take me down with a few flashy moves in the market? You’re nothing, Elyra. You’re a child playing at business. But I can fix that for you. You don’t have to be an enemy. You don’t have to keep fighting. Come back to us, and I’ll make you more powerful than you ever imagined." I took a step closer to him, my fists clenched at my sides. "I’ll never be part of your world. You’ll never control me again." Just then, the door to the office opened, and I didn’t need to look to know who it was. Damien stepped in, his presence immediately filling the room. He was as composed as ever, but I could see the tension in his shoulders, the weight of his father’s demands pressing on him. He looked at Charles, then at me, and something flickered in his eyes—an emotion I couldn’t quite place. "Elyra," he said softly, almost pleading. "Don’t do this. Don’t let him win." I stared at him, my heart pounding. The nerve of him, to speak to me like that after everything. He had betrayed me, used me, and yet here he was, playing the hero. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to slap him or kiss him. I was angry, but there was something else, something buried deep inside me that longed for him to stand by my side, even after everything. "Damien, stay out of this," I snapped, my voice trembling with a mix of rage and desire. "You’ve done enough damage already." He didn’t back down, though. He stepped closer, his eyes locking onto mine. "You don’t have to do this alone, Elyra. You don’t have to keep fighting me. Let me help you. Let me fix this." His words cut through me like a knife. He wasn’t just speaking to me—he was speaking to the woman I used to be, the woman who once trusted him with everything. I felt the old attraction rising, the magnetic pull between us. But I couldn’t give in. Not now, not when everything I had worked for was on the line. "You want to help me?" I asked, my voice low, almost dangerous. "Then get out of my way, Damien. You’re not the man I thought you were. You never were." He flinched, but I didn’t wait for him to respond. I turned my back on him, facing Charles once more. The tension in the room was suffocating, but I wasn’t about to let him see my vulnerability. Not again. Not ever. Charles watched the exchange between us with quiet amusement. "You see, Elyra," he said, his voice full of mock sympathy, "even your precious Damien is too weak to fight for you. Do you think you’re the only one who has the power to make things right? You’re wrong. You need me, whether you want to admit it or not." The words stung, but they also fueled the fire inside me. I wasn’t going to back down. Not from him. Not from anyone. But just as I was about to respond, a voice broke through the tension. "She doesn’t need you, Charles." I turned quickly, my eyes widening in shock. Luke, my trusted business partner, stood in the doorway, his face expressionless. I had trusted him. He had been by my side for months, helping me build my brand, my empire. But now... now he was standing there like a stranger. "What are you doing here, Luke?" I demanded, my heart pounding. He stepped into the room, his eyes locked on Charles, not even acknowledging me. "I’m here to tell you the truth, Elyra," he said coldly. "I’ve been playing both sides. I’ve been feeding information to Charles. I’ve been working for him this entire time." The words hit me like a slap in the face. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. My mind was racing, trying to process what he was saying. Betrayal. It was everywhere, and I couldn’t escape it. Luke turned his gaze to Charles, who was now watching him with an amused expression. "You’re not the only one who plays games," Luke added. "But I’m done playing for you." I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t speak, couldn’t even form a thought. My ally. My partner. The one person I thought I could trust—betrayed me in the worst possible way. Charles chuckled, clearly enjoying the chaos. "If you think you can ruin me, Elyra, you haven’t seen the worst of it yet."
