I switched off my phone to avoid calls from anyone. Still putting on my wedding gown, I took a cab and went to the outskirt of town. I knew I couldn't continue with the marriage plans and nothing was going to change my mind. First of all, I couldn't build my life with someone that has the heart to make his fortune from a source that illegal. Added to the fact that he actually had plans to get married to me and let me live with him ignorant of what he actually did for a living. To make matters worse, it was illegal activities that cost my dad his life 12 years ago. Something we didn't even have any idea how it happened. We just heard it was illicit business conflicts that caused it and his dead body was shipped from Cali. The pain it caused made me take a vow that I was never going to date talk less of get married to anyone into illegal ventures. I went to a liquor store to get bottles of my favourite liquor and gulped almost a quarter of it then Istrolled to the beach nearby.
I sat alone at the beach staring at the waves. My wedding dress was sandy and stained with drops of alcohol. A couple nearby caught my attention. The man who wore a bright yellow top dropped on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend. She exclaimed excitedly as she screamed yes. I couldn't bear it again, so I stood up and approached them.
“Excuse…excuse me…me young lady”. I said out in a slurred jumble.
“What's the matter?”. Her man responded out of curiosity.
I totally ignored him—
“Let me tell you truth, he is going to hurt you so bad, in fact he is going to hide things from you, things that when you find out you will hate yourself”
As I continued talking, they walked out but I screamed louder—
“He will make your heart bleed and you will realise it was just fantasies that you had and nothing was real— Arrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!”
I screamed and broke down in tears and then I went on my knees. As I cried, I heard footsteps behind me. I ignored them because I thought it was a stranger, but as it continued I recognised the rhythm of the steps then I turned and I saw that it was MY MUM. Her eyes were filled with deep concerns. Then she sat with me.
“Don't cry anymore my love, I promise you it will be fine.” she said softly as she held me.
The Next day My mum invited Walker over to her house to settle what transpired. Apparently he told her the details of what happened.
I sat on the couch with my eyes fixed on the floor, My mum was beside me.
Walker stood before us and his gaze was fixed on me.
“Baby, I'm so sorry, I was so wrong not to open up everything to you, Nelson was my childhood friend and when we grew , we had entanglements with wrong businesses and ended up getting into d**g trafficking. When I got caught I had to fabricate stories and set him up to be arrested because I knew if he was arrested he had the right connections to get him out earlier than I would have got out. To be honest with you, I planned on leaving the business after we got marriage, I already have an exit strategy planned. Please let's move on and pretend none of this happened.”
I didn't utter a word, I couldn't even look at him.
“Listen to him sweetie he wants to make this work “. My mum said as she patted my back.
“So you are supporting him, mum?”. I said angrily as I turned to her.
“No darling, I am supporting love.”
I looked at walker for the first time with a fierce glance.
Walker dropped on his knees and held my hands. He stared into my eyes and promised to never let anything hurt me. Instantly I was reminded of the very reason I fell in love with him and my heart softened. My mom left us to be alone. He held me and hugged me. I noticed immediately that his face changed as he hugged me, almost like an interfering thoughtvexed him.
“How did it go with Nelson?” I asked.
He cleared his throat and changed the topic of conversation immediately.
“Let's get some Chinese?” He said casually.
“Babe, you are not telling me something”. I replied.
“Yes, I am not. Its not something I am proud of.” He replied. He took a deep breath then continued—
“Nelson is hurt and he is trying to blackmail me, he has gathered d**g trafficking evidence against me and has threatened to take me to court and ruin everything I have built these past years, except I…..”
He took a deep breath—
“Give him the one thing he knows I won't even think of giving him.”
He shook his head and laid back, then I knew it was more serious than I thought it was.
“Is it money?” I asked anxiously.
“No, he wants a night stand with you”. He responded with a shaky voice.
Tears dropped from Walter's eyes.
NELSON'S HOTEL ROOM.
Two weeks passed and I resolved to do this to save my relationship The hotel was dimly lit, the only light I saw was that of the air conditioner which cast its rays on Nelson who laid plain n***d on the bed as he grinned in excitement.
“Come to daddy”. He said.
At this point I hesitated and thought of the whole pain that walker had caused me these past weeks. I took deep breaths to calm my nerves and reminded myself that once this is over we would start rescheduling the wedding and I won't even remember tonight.
“Just for one night and you are gone forever.” I told him.
He nodded yes as he became lit up in excitement.
It was the most horrible s*x I had experienced. The two full glasses of liquor I took before getting to the room saved me from being fully conscious of how horrible I felt.
He laid back on the bed as I cleaned up and prepared to leave.
“You know you are a strong woman, right?... You really did this for the man you love”. Nelson said.
I ignored him and continued organising my stuff, but he continued —
“I would have never expected that a pretty young lady like you will accept to go ahead and marry man after knowing that he was a d**g dealer, a terrorist and killer”.
I turned to him in shock—
“Oh, he didn't tell you he was a killer?”. Nelson said then burst into laughter.
I stormed out angrily.
I went straight to Walker's offices. Walking past his secretary I head straight to his door and opened it. Realising my countenance, he dismissed the clients he had with him.
“What's the matter?” He asked me immediately they left.
“So you killed someone?” I shouted with a venomous tone.
He took a deep breath then nodded—
“What do you mean by I killed someone? What did Nelsom tell you?” He stammered, but his facial expression already sold him.
“I am not here for jokes, did you freaking kill someone?”. I replied.
“I'm so sorry, Jackie. It was a mistake that I have regretted since it happened.”
“How could you do something like that!?” I shouted with my voice shaking with rage.
He took a deep breath and reached into his pocket. He pulled out his wallet, opened it and brought out a small photograph and looked at it as tears built up in his eyes.
“I literally think about him every day. But I had no option, it was a direct d**g from my d**g lord and I had to oblige, I am so sorry babe”. Tears rolled down his eyes as he stared at the photograph. Immediately i felt pity for him then I walked to him and tapped his back gently but as I looked at the photograph, I got the shock of my life, it was my DAD.
