CHAPTER 10

The forest came alive with sound, quick thudding of feet against earth, snapping branches as Lucas, Elena, and Marcus raced through the trees. Elena's breath came in quick, shallow gasps, her legs burning with the effort to keep up. Behind them, the soft rustling of their pursuers grew louder, relentless. "Faster!" Lucas urged voice sharp, almost feral in its intensity as he ran with an unnatural speed, eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight, every muscle strained as if feeling danger closing in around them. "Who the hell are these people?" Marcus panted, looking over his shoulder as he urged himself to run faster. "And why are they after us? They work for the organization," Lucas said over his shoulder. "They won't stop until they get what they want." "What do they want?" Elena gasped, her heart pounding not just from the exertion but fear. Fear of what she didn't know and starting to fear what she was beginning to understand about Lucas. "Me," Lucas said succinctly, his eyes flicking over to hers for a brief second. "And now you. With every word he spoke, Elena's chest felt tighter. She was always so drawn to Lucas, but the more real he made his world by crashing into hers, she wasn't so sure about trusting him. Was he dangerous? Or was he trying to protect her? For every step she took in thinking she got things, it shifted beneath her feet. It was then that Lucas suddenly grabbed her arm, yanking her to the left. "This way!" he ordered, taking them through a path almost invisible, for the branches were overgrown. By now, their pursuers sounded closer, the rustling of leaves and heavy breathing just about behind them. They pushed through thick underbrush, Lucas at the head with an ease only a person who knew these woods could have. He moved like a predator, his senses keen, guiding them with a surety that gave Elena a glimpse into just how different he was. As they ran, Elena couldn't help but think of so many questions. She threw a sideward glance at Lucas, observing him in the low light. He was strong, fast, and protective. But what else? Her mind flashed back to that moment in that clearing when he had told her about the truth. A werewolf. It couldn't still be real. But after what she'd seen, the way he moved, the way he'd growled back in the forest-it all fit. Just then Lucas stopped abruptly, his hand flying out to halt Elena and Marcus in their tracks. "Hold still," he whispered low and controlled. His eyes darted around the darkened forest, nostrils flaring slightly as if trying to catch the scent of the wind. Elena hunched low, her heart pounding in her chest, scarce daring to breathe. She strained her ears, trying to hear what Lucas could hear. But all she was aware of was the sound of her ragged breath and her heartbeat. "We've lost them. For now," Lucas said finally, after a moment, relaxing just a fraction. "But we can't stay here. There's a cabin not far from here. We'll be safe there—at least until I figure out what our next move is." "How do you know these woods so well?" Marcus asked suspiciously. "I've been hiding out here for a long time," Lucas said, his voice low but sure. "This forest is. Special. It's where my pack used to run before everything changed." Elena swallowed hard. "Your pack?" Lucas nodded, his eyes clouding with a mixture of sadness and anger. "There were more of us, once. But the organization - they've been hunting us. They want to control us, use us for their purposes." Control you how?" Elena asked, curiosity overriding fear. She needed to know what they were working with. Lucas's jaw clamped down. "They've been experimenting on werewolves for years, trying to unlock our abilities. The strength, the speed, the heightened senses. They want to turn us into weapons." Elena's stomach churned at the thought. "And Lucas-are you one of their experiments?" "Nein," Lucas exclaimed in a hasty, cold tone. "I managed to escape before they could catch me. But not everyone was that lucky." He turned to her, his eyes seriously incarnate that ran a shiver down her spine. "That is why they are after me now. And that is why they won't rest until they have me in their custody and anyone else who knows too much." Marcus whistled low. "And now we know too much." "Exactly," Lucas said. "Which means we have to be careful. They'll use whatever they can to get to us." As they moved through the trees, the air grew colder, the shadows lengthening as the moon climbed higher into the night sky. The forest seemed to close in around them, a maze of towering trees and twisted branches. Finally, they broke into a small clearing, and nestled between the trees lay a weathered cabin: small and unobtrusive, moss on the roof, ivy crawling up its walls, somehow safe, like a sanctuary hidden from the rest of the world. Lucas led them inside, rapidly bolting the door behind them. The cabin was sparsely decorated: it was but one room with a table, several chairs, and a fireplace. It smelled of dampened wood and earth, but it was a welcome reprieve from the cold, open air of the forest. As Lucas lit a fire in the hearth, the flickering flames danced shadows along the wall. Elena sat down heavily in one of the chairs, everything hitting her at once. "I don't understand," she whispered, turning to face Lucas. "How did this happen? How did you end up caught between these two worlds? For a moment, Lucas said nothing more. In front of the fire, he stood with his eyes fixed upon the flames, his expression filled with so much conflicting emotion. "It wasn't supposed to be like this," he finally said. "We were supposed to live in peace, hidden from humans. But the organization found out about us, and once they did, everything changed. They're not just a research group, are they?" Marcus asked, pacing the room. "There's more to it than that." Lucas nodded grimly. "They're funded by powerful people-people who see us as nothing more than tools. They don't care about the damage they're causing. They just want control." Elena shivered, pulling her jacket tighter around her. "So what do we do now? Before Lucas could answer, there was a sudden noise from outside, a faint rustling, followed by the unmistakable crunching of footsteps on the forest floor. Lucas froze, head whipping toward the door. His eyes shone with that same unearthly light, attitude changed to one of alertness-of. Predatorial instincts. "They've found us," he whispered, voice low with dread and resolution. Elena's breath caught as the footsteps grew louder and closer. She could make out through the small window the outlines of figures moving through the trees, their shadows long and menacing in the light of the moon. Lucas turned to them, his face fierce. "Stay quiet. Stay low. I'll handle this." But Elena knew, deep down, this was far from over. The hunt had only just begun.
