Tension mounted as Elena and Marcus went about their preparations against what was to come. Threating text messages and warnings were one thing, but the information they had come to learn from Mia was quite another thing altogether-this was something that couldn't be taken so lightly. There was no turning back.
They would be meeting Mia at a safer location, some old abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. It was a place that Mia suggested, well out of prying eyes. The night stretched and stretched as they drove through it, their car's headlamps cutting through the darkness. Elena's fingers tapped nervously on her lap as her mind raced.
I still don't know if we can trust her," Marcus grumbled, his eyes on the road.
"I don't either," Elena said, "but if what she says is true, then Lucas is in real trouble. We need to find out more.
Marcus's face twisted into a sigh, and his knuckles whitened a little more on the wheel. "Just remember what we're getting into. These people play dirty. And Lucas. I don't think we really know who he is anymore.".
Elena didn't utter a word. She couldn't get rid of the feeling that Lucas was still the same old Lucas whom she had known from her childhood, only having fallen into something way over his head. But in how deep? And what would that mean to them?
They finally reached the warehouse and, well in advance, parked the car deep in the shadows so as not to raise any suspicions. Already inside was a nervous Mia, pacing back and forth.
You're sure this place is safe?" Marcus asked, his eyes going around the area.
"As safe as we can get right now," Mia said low. "Not completely off the radar, but good enough considering the alternative: out in the open.
As they went further into the darkness, a chill began to run down Elena's spine. There was only the heavy air with dust and the intermittent crackle of the old building. Mia led them to a place in one corner, seating themselves on crates as if to listen to her now.
Elena began, "Okay, Mia, what is going on with Lucas and this organization? You have hinted and hinted, but we need the whole story.
Mia looked around before speaking, as if someone might overhear. "The organization Lucas works for-it's involved in some very dangerous research. They started out with good intentions, trying to find ways to cure diseases, enhance human abilities, that sort of thing. But somewhere along the way, things went wrong."
Elena frowned. "What do you mean, 'wrong'?
They started experimenting on people." Mia relayed, her tone disgusted. "Not only volunteers but prisoners, people that didn't even know they were involved in the research. They were testing new drugs, messing with DNA. pushing the boundaries of what is ethical."
Marcus's face darkened. "And Lucas is part of this?
Mia nodded. "He's one of their top researchers. Initially he had thought he was doing the right thing, that he was helping people. But when he realized what the organization was really up to, it was too late. He's been trying to get out ever since."
Elena's heart sank. "Why didn't he just leave?
Because they won't let him," Mia said. "They are utterly in control. They threaten him, his family, and now you two. He's stuck between his loyalty to the organization and his morals.".
All this swirled in her mind, making Elena fall back against the cushion. Lucas wasn't the man she thought he was; he was part of something dark, something dangerous. Still, she couldn't help but feel a little sympathetic toward him because he had been entangled in a web of lies, as they themselves were now.
"We need to get him out," Elena said firmly. "He doesn't need to be mixed up in this crap."
Mia shook her head. "It's not that easy. If he tries to leave, they'll come after him. And after you."
Marcus crossed his arms over his chest, his face set. "Then why are we even here? If Lucas is in so deep, then maybe it's best we walk away before we get ourselves killed.
Elena whipped to Marcus, her anger bubbling. "We can't just turn our backs. Lucas is in danger. We're in danger. But we have to find a way to help him."
Marcus turned to her, his jaw clenched. "You're putting too much faith in him, Elena. You don't know what he's capable of."
"Neither do you!" she fired back. "But I'm willing to find out. Are you?
It was the elephant in the room again, Mia, who finally spoke. "There's more. The organization is hiding something-a cover-up. I don't know all of it, but there have been whispers about an experiment that went real wrong. They're trying to cover it up, and Lucas knows too much. That's why they keep him so near.
A cover-up?" Elena whispered. "What kind of experiment?
"I'm not sure, exactly," said Mia, "but this is a human trial. There were deaths, and they'd want to keep that secret. If Lucas lets it out, the whole thing could fall apart. That's why they are desperate to win the game of bringing him down.
The bottom of Elena's stomach started to fall out. It was worse than she could have ever envisioned: not only was Lucas involved in unethical experiments, but now they were entangled in a conspiracy that could cost them their lives.
"What do we do?" she asked, turning to Marcus for support.
Marcus exhaled, rubbing his temples. "We need proof. If we could bring down that organization, then maybe-maybe-Lucas could get out unscathed. But we must tread with care. One wrong step, and we're toast."
Mia nodded in agreement. "I'll try to dig for more information from my contacts, but it's hazardous. For now, keep your heads low and do not attract any unnecessary attention.
Just as they were about to leave, Mia's phone buzzed. She looked at it, went pale, and, out of nowhere, said, "We need to go. Now."
"What is it?" Elena asked, her voice shaking.
Without an answer to her question, Mia clutched her things and hastily went toward the exit. "We are being watched."
Elena's heart was racing as they followed Mia outside. The cold night air hit them like a brick wall, yet it wasn't the chill that sent shivers down Elena's spine; rather, it was a figure across the street, watching them.
"Who is that?" Marcus asked in a low, tight tone.
"I don't know," Mia said, her voice trembling. "But we need to leave. Now.
As they increased their walking speed toward where their car was, Elena couldn't remove this feeling that they were being taken deeper into the world they didn't understand. Whosoever watched them wasn't going to
let them get away that easily.
Danger mounted with every step. And with it, Elena's determination-to know the truth, no matter the cost-increased.
