Chapter 12Helena awoke to the distinctive sound of a pebble being bounced off her bedroom window as the grandfather clock in the hall gonged five times. She sighed. Elizabeth was such a child at times, and Helena loved her all the more for it. She slipped into her warmest dress, and grabbed a wool shawl from the bureau. The staff had questioned her giving them a day off on both Saturday and Sunday but she hushed them away, so the house was hers to leave, even at this ungodly hour.
