THE MAN WITH NOTHING TO LOSE

EPISODE 20 Luke's pov Luke Mwaura didn’t start out evil. He started out broke. --- #### THE GHETTO Kibera. Room 12B. Tin roof. One bulb. No running water. Luke was 10 when his dad left. His mom died when he was 14. TB. No money for hospital. Left with one thing: a 9-year-old brother. Brian. Sickle cell. Needs medicine every month. 40,000 shillings. Luke dropped out of Form 2. "Someone has to eat," he told Brian. He did boda. He did construction. He did anything. But 40k a month? Impossible. So Luke learned a new skill: How to survive. --- #### NAIROBI HUSTLE By 18, Luke moved to Westlands. Not to live. To hunt. He figured it out fast: Rich girls were bored. Rich girls were lonely. Rich girls liked a handsome boy who listened. So Luke became that boy. Gym body. Clean shirts. Good stories. "I'm an entrepreneur," he'd say. "My brother is sick. I'm trying to help him." And it worked. Dinner paid. Uber paid. "Birthday gift" = 50k. "Emergency" = 100k. Then he'd dump them. Before they could dump him. Isabella was the biggest one. Her family had 200M. Luke proposed after 3 months. Not because he loved her. Because of the inheritance. When she got pregnant with his baby, he left. "Not my problem," he said. --- #### THE ADDICTION But 40k wasn't enough. Brian's medicine went up to 60k. Landlord wanted rent. So Luke found betting. "Just one game," he told himself. He won 200k once. Felt like God. Then he lost 500k. Then 1M. Then 2M. Loan sharks. 4.3M debt now. Interest every week. They'd come to the ghetto if he didn't pay. Brian saw the men once. "Bro, are you okay?" "I'm fine," Luke lied. "Just business." That night Luke didn’t sleep. --- #### THE CLUB Friday night. Club Icon. Luke was there. As always. Not to drink. To work. Scanning the room. Who’s new? Who’s rich? Who’s drunk? He saw a girl. 24. Daddy owns 3 hotels. He moved in. Smile. Compliment. Touch her hand. "Buy me a drink?" she asked. "Only if you let me buy you dinner tomorrow," he said. She laughed. Gave him her number. This was his life. Use them. Dump them. Pay Brian's medicine. Pay the loan sharks. Repeat. He hated himself. But hate didn’t pay hospital bills. --- #### THE CALL FROM VICTORIA 11pm. Underground parking. Victoria slid into the passenger seat. Designer coat. Expensive perfume. In this place? She stood out like gold. "Luke Mwaura," she said. "How do you know my name?" "I know a lot," she said. "I know about Brian. I know about the 4.3M. I know about Isabella." Luke went cold. "What do you want?" "To make you rich," Victoria said. "50 million. Cash. VP job at Blackwood Tech. And all your debts gone." Luke laughed. Nervous. "And what’s the catch?" "You lie," Victoria said. "On TV. You say the baby is Damien Blackwood’s. You say Freya knew. You ruin their wedding." Silence. Luke thought about Brian. About the medicine. About the men who were coming next week. He thought about Isabella. Who left him. Who used him too. "Why me?" he asked. "Because you have nothing to lose," Victoria said. "And everything to gain." --- #### THE DECISION Luke drove home to Kibera at 1am. Brian was asleep. Oxygen tank next to the bed. Beeping. Steady. Luke sat on the floor. Head in hands. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "To everyone I’ve hurt." "To Isabella." "To those girls." "But I’m sorry to Brian too. If I don’t do this, we die." He called Victoria at 2am. "I'm in," he said. "Good boy," she said. "Press conference Monday." --- #### VICTORIA'S LAST WORDS After the call, Victoria texted him: `Don’t get cold feet. I have your brother’s hospital records. I have your debt papers. If you run, you lose everything.` Luke deleted the text. He looked at Brian. "I’m doing this for you," he whispered. "Even if it makes me a monster." Outside, Nairobi was loud. Inside Room 12B, a man sold his soul for 50 million and a sick brother. And Victoria? She was smiling. Because men like Luke were easy. Hungry. Desperate. Controllable. "Let them have their wedding," she thought. "Monday, it all burns."
