THE RING THAT WASN'T IN THE CONTRACT

EPISODE 10 The internet broke in 2 hours. #TeamFreya was trending. #ContractWife was trending. And my face was on every gossip blog in Nairobi. "Gold digger." "Lucky girl." "She defended him. That’s love." I hated all of it. --- Damien didn’t go to work for 3 days. He stayed home. With me. We cooked. Burned toast twice. We watched movies. He fell asleep on the couch. I didn’t wake him. On day 4, Clara came in panicking. "Sir, you HAVE to go to the charity gala tonight. The investors. The board. If you don’t show, they’ll think you’re hiding." Damien looked at me. "Do you want to go?" I didn’t. But I nodded. "Yes." If people were going to talk, I’d rather they talk to my face. --- The gala was worse than the first one. Cameras. Flashes. Whispers. "That’s her." "The contract wife." "50 million." I kept my head high. Red dress. Damien’s hand on my lower back. Not holding. Just... there. Halfway through, Victoria appeared. In diamonds. In spite. "Oh look," she said loud enough for everyone. "The bride without a ring." Gasps. She was right. There was no ring on my finger. Because the contract didn’t include one. Damien’s jaw ticked. "Victoria." "What? I’m just saying," Victoria smiled. "A real wife gets a ring. A fake one gets a bank transfer." I felt 100 eyes on me. My hands shook. And then Damien moved. He stepped in front of me. Looked at the whole room. And said: "She doesn’t have a ring." Silence. "Because I was scared," he continued. Voice steady. "Scared that if I gave her a ring, she’d think I was buying her again. Scared that if I asked her to be my wife for real, she’d say no." He turned to me. In front of 200 people. Cameras rolling. "Freya Carter," he said. "I don’t care about the contract anymore. I care about you. About the girl who worked 3 jobs. About the girl who defended me in a boardroom. About the girl who made me want to be a better man." He pulled something from his pocket. Not a contract. A small black box. My heart stopped. "I didn’t plan this," he said. "I never plan anything. But I’m done waiting 9 years." He opened it. A ring. Simple. Elegant. Not too big. Because he knew I’d hate that. "Will you marry me?" he asked. "For real. No contract. No money. No conditions. Just me. And you. For as long as you’ll have me." The room was dead silent. I couldn’t breathe. This wasn’t in the contract. This wasn’t part of the deal. This was Damien. Raw. Exposed. Tears fell before I could stop them. "Damien... people are watching." "Let them watch," he said. "I’ve been watching you for 9 years. My turn to be watched." Victoria scoffed. "This is pathetic—" "Shut up, Victoria," someone in the crowd said. Then another: "Say yes, girl." I looked at the ring. Then at him. Red eyes. Shaking hands. The most powerful man in Nairobi... shaking. I thought about the orphanage. About the rain. About the man who paid hospital bills in secret. I took a shaky breath. "Yes," I whispered. Then louder: "Yes." The room EXPLODED. Cheers. Clapping. Phones recording. Damien slid the ring on my finger. It fit perfectly. He didn’t kiss me. Not there. But he pulled me into a hug. Tight. Like he was scared I’d vanish. And he whispered in my ear: "Thank you. For choosing me." --- We left 10 minutes later. Security had to clear a path. In the car, I stared at the ring. "It’s beautiful," I said. "I had Clara pick 3," Damien admitted. "In case you said no." "That’s arrogant." "That’s me," he said, and smiled. He took my hand. Really took it. Laced our fingers together. "Condition three is gone now," he said softly. "Unless you want it back." "No," I said. "I don’t." He brought my hand to his lips. Kissed my knuckles. Right over the ring. "Freya?" "Yeah?" "I’m terrified." "Of what?" "Of messing this up. Of you realizing you can do better. Of this being too good to be true." I squeezed his hand. "Then don’t mess it up," I said. "Learn with me. Remember?" He nodded. And rested his head on my shoulder. Right there in the back seat. For the first time, Damien Blackwood looked peaceful. --- When we got home, the news was already out. BLACKWOOD PROPOSES TO CONTRACT WIFE. SHE SAID YES. My phone was blowing up. Messages from the orphanage: We saw you! We’re so proud! Messages from strangers: You deserve love. Damien poured us water. No whiskey tonight. "So," he said. "What now?" "Now," I said, holding up my hand. "We plan a wedding. A real one. With Grandma. And the kids from the orphanage." His eyes went soft. "You want that?" "I want everything with you," I said. "Just... slowly. Okay?" "Slowly," he agreed. "I can do slow." He pulled me to the couch. We sat. His arm around me. My head on his chest. No contract. No conditions. Just us. Outside, Nairobi was loud. Inside, it was quiet. And for the first time in both our lives... We had home
