EPISODE 16
The house was too quiet after Victoria left.
Only the sound of June crying.
Soft. Like she was trying not to.
"Hey," Damien said, kneeling in front of her.
"You’re safe here. Okay?"
June was 13. But she looked 10 right now.
Pajamas. Messy hair. Backpack clutched to her chest.
"I didn’t pack much," she whispered. "I didn’t think I’d—"
"You don’t have to," Freya said, sitting next to her.
"You can stay as long as you need."
June looked at Freya. Then at Damien.
"Is she... is she going to hurt you too?"
"No," Damien said. Voice firm. "Never again.
I promise you that."

#### THE GUEST ROOM
Freya made up the guest room.
Fresh sheets. Extra blanket.
She found a stuffed elephant in the closet.
"Damien, do you remember this?"
"From when I was 8," he said, smiling sadly.
"Give it to her."
Freya placed it on the bed.
June touched it. "Thank you."
"Do you want anything to eat?" Freya asked.
"I’m not hungry," June said. "Just... tired."
Freya brushed her hair. Slowly.
No one had done that in a long time.
"Sleep okay?" Freya asked.
"I’ll try," June said.
Freya kissed her forehead. "Night, kiddo."
When Freya came out, Damien was in the hall.
Arms crossed. Watching the door.
"She’s asleep," Freya whispered.
He exhaled. Like he’d been holding his breath.
"Thank you," he said. "For... being good with her."
---
#### 2 AM
A small voice. "Brother Damien?"
Damien was up instantly.
June stood in the doorway. Nightmare eyes.
"I had a bad dream," she said.
"Come here," Damien said, opening the couch.
She climbed up. Curled into his side.
He pulled a blanket over both of them.
"Talk to me," he said.
"Was Mom always like that?" June asked.
Damien was quiet. "Yeah. I think so.
I just didn’t want to see it."
June sniffled. "She never tucked me in.
She said I was too old.
But I’m not."
Damien’s throat tightened.
"Then I’ll tuck you in," he said.
"Every night. If you want."
June nodded and fell asleep.
Damien didn’t move for hours.
Freya watched from the kitchen.
And her heart broke.
For the little girl.
And for the man who was finally allowed to be soft.

#### MORNING
Breakfast was chaos. In a good way.
Pancakes. Burned on one side.
June laughing.
Damien trying to flip them and failing.
"Okay, chef Freya, take over," he said.
"I’m a CEO, not a cook."
"You’re a bad cook," Freya teased.
"I’m a good provider," he said, winking.
June giggled. Real giggle. First one in years.
After breakfast, June pulled Freya aside.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Why do you like him?"
Freya blinked. "Who?"
"Brother Damien. He’s... grumpy. And rich. And—"
"And he pays hospital bills in secret," Freya said.
"And he remembers your favorite pancakes.
And he’s terrified of messing up.
And he chose you over everyone."
June thought about that.
"Okay," she said. "I like you too."

#### THE CALL
At noon, Richard called.
Damien put it on speaker.
"Son? Is June with you?"
"Yes," Damien said.
"Is she okay?" Richard asked. Voice weak.
"She’s better than okay," Damien said. "She’s safe."
Long pause.
"Victoria?" Richard asked.
"Is gone," Damien said. "From the house. From our lives.
Dad... we need to talk. About the tea.
About the will."
Richard sighed. "I know.
I’ve known for a while.
I was just... tired.
Come see me tomorrow.
All of you."
After the call, June looked scared.
"What if he sends me back?"
"He won’t," Damien said. "I won’t let him.
And Freya won’t let him either, right?"
"Never," Freya said, squeezing June’s hand.

#### THE ORPHANAGE VISIT
That afternoon, they went to the orphanage.
All 3 of them.
Grandma cried when she saw June.
"Oh, my child. Come here."
The kids swarmed June.
"New sister!"
"Can you play?"
"Do you like football?"
For the first time, June smiled. Real smile.
She played football. She lost. She laughed.
Damien watched from the bench.
Freya sat next to him.
"You okay?" she asked.
"I’ve never seen her like this," he said.
"Free."
He took Freya’s hand.
"Thank you. For bringing her here.
For bringing me here."
Freya leaned on his shoulder.
"Family isn’t blood," she said.
"It’s who shows up."
---
#### NIGHT 2
Bedtime routine.
Dinner. Homework. Bath.
Damien actually helped with math.
"Damien, 2+2 is 4, not 22."
"I’m good with billions, not basics," he said.
June rolled her eyes. "You’re dumb."
"And you’re stuck with me," he said.
Tucking in.
Damien pulled the blanket up.
"Night, June."
"Night, Brother Damien."
"Night, Freya."
"Night," Freya said from the door.
When the lights were off, June whispered:
"Can you stay till I fall asleep?"
"Always," Damien said.
He stayed.
Hand on her back.
Until her breathing went slow.

#### LATE NIGHT TALK
11pm. Kitchen.
Damien and Freya with tea.
"He’s going to be okay," Freya said.
"June?"
"Both of them," Freya said. "You and June."
Damien looked at his hands.
"I don’t know how to be a dad."
"You’re not her dad," Freya said.
"You’re her uncle.
And you’re doing great."
He looked up. "What if Victoria comes back?"
"Then we fight," Freya said. "Together.
No contract. No conditions.
Just us."
Damien reached across the table.
Took her hand.
"I love you," he said. "Both of you.
Is that okay?"
Freya smiled. "It’s more than okay.
It’s everything."
He kissed her knuckles. Right over the ring.
"Tomorrow we see Dad.
And then... we figure out custody.
And lawyers.
And all the messy stuff."
"We’ll do it together," Freya said.
"Team Blackwood-Carter," Damien said.
"Team Family," Freya corrected.
They clinked mugs.
Outside, Nairobi slept.
Inside, 3 people who were broken
were slowly putting each other back together.
No contract.
No money.
Just love.
And maybe that was the most dangerous thing of all.
