CHAPTER 17 JACOB I awake when the sun's just cracking the horizon, the August heat already thick and muggy. I can feel the warm sun beating down on my face and I smile, noting how comfortable I feel. Surprisingly, under the circumstances, I can't remember the last time I slept this well. Sophie's smell--that coconut and vanilla scent--is all around me. I take a deep breath and try to reach for her, my hand sifting through the sheets on the other side of the bed. But to my shock, she isn't there. The sound of running water brings me to a sitting position. I swing my legs over the side of the bed, trying to clear my foggy brain, as I wiggle into my pants from the night before.
