"Sign the family land deeds, Logan, or we will cut off your toes one by one until there is nothing left to sever," the lead enforcer spat, his voice echoing against the cold steel walls.
Midnight had long settled over the rusted industrial district of Lower Oakhaven. Rain beat down relentlessly on the corrugated iron roof, mixing with the sharp scent of machine oil and raw blood.
Bound tightly to a heavy iron chair, Logan Turner gasped for air through a mouth filled with copper-tasting blood. His clothes were shredded, soaked in crimson, and clung to his mangled body.
"I will never give you those deeds," Logan rasped, his voice raw and raspy. He forced his swelling eyes open, staring directly into the cold glare of his tormentor.
"You stubborn fool," the enforcer replied with a chilling smile. "You think your pride matters in the lower sectors? Here, you are just livestock waiting for the slaughter."
The enforcer was a high-ranking lieutenant of the Sunborn tribal syndicate, recognizable by the intricate sunburst tattoo etched across his neck and jaw. He stepped closer, flipping a serrated combat knife in his gloved palm.
Logan tried to shift his legs, but the thick iron chains bound him securely to the frame. The cold metal bit deep into his raw flesh, a constant ache amidst the screaming agony of his injuries.
"Let us try this again," the enforcer murmured, leaning in close. "Where are the original land deeds to the Lower Oakhaven harbor properties?"
"Go straight to hell," Logan wheezed, spitting a mixture of blood and phlegm onto the man’s polished leather boot.
The enforcer’s expression darkened instantly. Without a second thought, he brought the heavy butt of the knife handle down hard against Logan's broken jaw.
A sickening crack filled the quiet warehouse, followed by Logan’s muffled groan. The pain flared like wildfire through his head, threatening to drag him into unconsciousness, but he forced himself to remain awake.
"Hold him still," the lieutenant ordered two oversized thugs standing in the shadows behind the chair.
The two men stepped forward immediately, grips like iron vises clamping down on Logan’s shoulders. They pinned his head back against the cold headrest, exposing his throat and collarbone to the dim yellow spotlight above.
"The Sunborn syndicate does not negotiate with broken men," the lieutenant whispered, pressing the tip of the serrated blade directly against Logan’s left collarbone. "We carve what we want from your flesh."
The steel pierced his skin. Logan’s body jerked violently against the restraints as the blade sank deeper, dragging across the bone with deliberate, torturous slowness.
A blood-curdling scream tore through Logan's throat, echoing into the cavernous rafters of the abandoned factory. He gritted his teeth until he felt his molars crack under the immense pressure.
Blood gushed freely down his chest, soaking into his torn shirt and pooling on the concrete floor below. Every second felt like an eternity as the blade methodically peeled away his tissue.
"Tell me where the deeds are!" the enforcer demanded, leaning all his weight into the knife. "Save yourself from a slow death!"
"Never..." Logan gasped out, his chest heaving as sweat mixed with the warm blood running down his face. "My grandfather built those docks... you won't touch them."
The lieutenant pulled the knife out with a cruel twist, causing Logan’s body to convulse. Fresh blood spilled rapidly, splashing onto the cold floor.
"You value paper over your own life," the enforcer sneered, wiping the bloody blade on Logan’s sleeve. "It matters little. Once you are dead, we will forge the signatures anyway."
Logan’s vision began to blur around the edges. Black spots danced across his line of sight as the extreme loss of blood finally began to take its toll on his body.
He could hear his own ragged breathing, hollow and weak. The room seemed to spin, the dim overhead light stretching into long streaks of burning yellow.
"Is he still alive?" one of the thugs asked, kicking the leg of the iron chair.
"Barely," the lieutenant said, checking his wrist watch. "We are out of time. The patrol boats will pass the main canal in ten minutes."
"What about the body, boss?" the second thug asked, adjusting his grip on a heavy crowbar. "Do we bury him in the slag heaps?"
"No, that takes too long," the lieutenant replied coldly. "Dump his mangled body into the freezing sewer channels. The current will sweep him out to the ocean bay before dawn."
The two thugs moved quickly, unbuckling the heavy leather straps while keeping Logan’s arms secured. They dragged his limp, blood-soaked body toward a wide circular iron grate in the corner of the room.
Logan couldn't fight back. His limbs felt like lead, completely devoid of strength as the floor dragged beneath his boots.
The thugs lifted the heavy iron cover, revealing the roaring dark waters below. The stench of rot, chemical waste, and cold rain rushed up from the abyss.
"Have a good swim, Turner," the lieutenant said, stepping up to the edge of the pit. "Your family line ends tonight in the gutter."
The thugs released their hold. Logan felt the terrifying sensation of weightlessness as he plummeted into the pitch-black opening.
An instant later, the freezing water slammed into him like a solid wall. The shock of the ice-cold sewer current knocked the last bit of air right out of his lungs.
The dark water swallowed him whole, pulling him down into the rushing depths of Lower Oakhaven's underground channels. The freezing temperature burned against his open collarbone wound like liquid fire.
He kicked his legs feebly, but the heavy current tumbled him endlessly through dark concrete pipes. He swallowed mouthfuls of foul water, coughing and gagging in total darkness.
His head struck a sharp concrete edge underwater, sending another violent shockwave of pain through his skull. Logan felt his consciousness slipping away completely as the rushing water carried him deeper into the subterranean maze.
Thoughts of his home, his family's legacy, and the brutal betrayal flashed through his dying mind. He refused to let go, dragging his hands along the slime-covered walls to slow his descent.
The current violently flushed him toward a steep drop, cascading him down a roar of rushing water into the open outer channels near the slum outskirts.
He broke the surface for a brief second, gasping desperately for air before being dragged under once again by the churning foam. His strength was entirely gone; his limbs drifted uselessly in the freezing water.
The sharp chill seeped into his bones, numbing the agonizing pain in his chest and collarbone. He was drifting toward the vast, dark expanse of the ocean where no one would ever find him.
As his eyes closed and the world went completely dark, a jagged piece of wooden debris caught his torn shirt, snagging his body near a muddy riverbank at the far edge of the slums.
His limp form washed ashore onto the freezing mud, half-submerged in the filthy tide. The rain continued to pour, washing the thick blood from his face into the murky water.
Through the heavy storm, a dark figure holding a waterproof lantern approached the riverbank, stepping carefully through the piles of rusted metal and industrial trash.
The figure stopped, the beam of light cutting through the rain and focusing directly on Logan's motionless, bloody face.
"Stay down, don't move," a rough voice called out through the storm as heavy footsteps hurried closer. "Hey! Can you hear me? Speak to me!"
