Chapter 48: Fibber on the Roof

1158 Words
The large water tank sat on the left-hand side of the rooftop. It seemed big enough to supply a huge amount of water. The tank was eight meters long and six meters high, and it took up a lot of space on the rooftop. For now, Luther didn’t feel that they were in danger. He stepped outside. The rain came down hard. But Luther, with his mastery of water, felt even more at ease. This was a welcoming environment for him. His exhaustion disappeared, and his energy was recovered quickly. Luther had no powers in his previous life. So, being in this situation gave him a better understanding of what being an erazer is like. Being surrounded by the power of his element was refreshing for him. But Luther didn't have much time to ponder on this. They didn’t have an umbrella to shield them from the rain. They ran to the edge of the rooftop to see the police station, and their clothes were soaked by the rain. Luther stood at the front of the rooftop. The CloudCom building was on the opposite side. It was a little taller than the restaurant was. The buildings were about 20 meters apart, which surprised him. He looked at Oliver and asked, "It’s further away than I anticipated. Can you jump that far, or do we need to throw a rope over there?” "Uh, I don’t think we should use a rope to get over there. I don’t know if our rope is going to be strong enough to support us. " Oliver wiped the rain from his face and responded meekly. "So, how else are any of us supposed to get over there?” Luther frowned. Apparently, he didn’t believe in Oliver’s ability. Luther was now about to run to the edge of the building and jump. He could jump ten meters at most. It would be extremely hard for him to leap even another meter than that. He didn’t know how it was possible for him to jump an entire 20-meter gap. Oliver stood up straight, hoping to prove himself. He was afraid that Luther didn’t hear him, so he spoke up louder. He proudly said, "Luther, I'm not as good a fighter as you are. But I’m very good at long jumps. I was actually the long jump champion of my university’s track and field competition. And now I’ve been given this power to jump further than I ever have before. I know 20-meters is far for me, but I can do this.” "Well, just be careful." Luther nodded. Elena took the rope out from the backpack for them. Luther didn’t know where they got the rope, but it was around 30-meters long. They needed the rope to be tied own secure on the restaurant so the others could climb across the gap. "Tie the rope to the water tank." Luther pointed to the water tank on his left. The large water tank was welded into the cement rooftop. It was very stable. But it was a little far from the edge of the roof. Oliver didn’t hesitate to go there and he assumed the rope was long enough. He was going to tie one end of the rope to the foot of the water tank. Eric now saw his chance to get rid of the others. The rope was important to his plan. When they climb on the rope, he could untie the rope from the tank. Then, Luther and the other teammates would fall to their deaths. Eric planned this all out in his head and smiled. Seeing that Oliver had started to tie the rope, Eric quickly stepped forward and said, "Oliver, I'll tie it for you. I know a couple of sailor’s knots." Oliver looked at him suspiciously. He looked to Luther for advice. When Luther didn’t respond, he refused Eric’s offer, "Don’t worry about it, I'll do it myself." "Please, Oliver. I know I'm not as powerful as you guys are, and I haven't been very helpful to any of you so far. You guys have always saved my life. I really want to help, but I don’t know how else to do it. Just let me to tie the knot. I’m good at it. " Eric asked earnestly. Seeing how Eric begged to assist him, Oliver agreed. He handed the rope over and said, "Make sure it’s a tight knot.” "Okay, just trust me. I’m very good at this." Eric took over the rope and tied it to the tank. In a few seconds, a very intricate knot was wrapped around the foot of the tank. Luther keeping glancing back to watch Eric tie the rope. This skill was very important for their survival these days. There were many enemies and mutant beasts that needed to be caught alive on doomsday. They needed to tie ropes often. So, Luther was very skilled at tying knots too. Luther could think of at least three ways to untie the knot in seconds. If Luther knew how to untie it, then Eric would know, too. Eric’s malicious intent was clear. However, Eric was a good actor. He even asked Oliver to check the knot. Oliver, who was naïve to Eric’s deceit, tugged on it a few times and found it to be sturdy enough to walk on. Oliver was standing next to the large tank, ready to tie the other end of the rope to his waist. But he heard something coming from the water tank. However, the rain was picking up. The sound of the rain hitting the rooftop and the metal water tank had gotten louder. Oliver was a little suspicious and asked Eric, "Did you hear something?" Eric only cared about his plan and didn’t care about the others. He responded mildly, "No, it's the rain. Maybe you thought you heard something else." "Really?" Oliver glared at the thunderstorm. He began to doubt his own hearing. He turned around and told Luther, "I'm ready, now." "Okay, then go ahead. Don't worry, I’ll be there to catch you when you fall." Luther joked. Oliver refuted, "Luther, just watch. I might surprise you." He stepped back about ten meters to gain speed. Luther and the others watched as he was preparing to jump over. He took two steps and then sprinted forward. As he neared the edge of the building, a loud crash A roll of thunder rumbled loud enough to make his ears ring. "Damn." Oliver stopped at the edge of the roof. He almost fell off the building! Oliver patted his chest and took a deep breath, "Are you kidding me?" Elena shouted, "It's just thunder. Try again! Come on, Oliver." Oliver looked at the gap between the buildings He was a little worried now that he was looking down at the ground far beneath them. Luther asked, "Are you sure you’re okay?" “Of course!" Oliver thought: I can’t disappoint him. He has stood on the edge. How can he give up? Oliver stepped back ten meters again and shouted as he rushed towards the edge of the roof. This time Oliver did try his best. Luther could even see the blue veins protruding from his neck through the rain.
