Chapter 40: New Leadership

Luther noticed their surprise, but he didn't care. Why should he summon more water to help them wash up? After all, it takes up his energy to create water like this. If they came across more people in the future, he would have to make water for thousands of people every day. I would kill him and leave them defenseless.   When he finished washing up, Luther asked quietly, "Elena, what were you doing out there? Why did you two try and fight that monster?"   Elena looked at Eric, then looked down and answered, "We thought it was going to defeat you, so we decided to go help you. I didn’t think that Oliver would end up getting hurt out there. I'm sorry."   Luther noticed Elena glancing at Eric and realized that he had something to do with this. Instead of asking Eric what really happened, he just waved his hand and said, "Well it’s too late now.”   Eric was afraid of Luther finding out his scheme, and when he saw Luther wave his hand over the matter, he felt relieved. Eric took out a cigarette carton from his pocket, slipped out a cigarette, and handed it to Luther, saying, "Luther, I’ve been saving these. But I want to give it to you to thank you for saving me.”   But Luther didn't respond. He just looked at him. Eric felt uncomfortable and stuttered, "Listen, I know what I did before was wrong. I really hope you forgive me."   "Okay." Luther chuckled, took the cigarette, lit it, and smirked a light smile.   Eric saw Luther accept the cigarette and smile. He felt as if a big weight had been lifted from his shoulders.   What he didn't know was that Luther laughed because Eric just offered cigarettes to the man who would kill him.   Luther was not used to Eric's malevolence. Leading the grim reaper right to them was obviously a deliberate attempt to get revenge on them. If it had not been for his previous knowledge of the grim reaper's weakness, and his considerable strength, they would have died there.   Oliver rushed in, most likely from Eric’s influence. Luther, who had spared his life, already planned to kill him if he ever got in their way again. However, if he killed him in front of the others would only trouble them further, so he waited for the right time to deal with him quietly.   Luther had to laugh because Eric was so devoted to lying to the point of offering him a cigarette to gain his approval.   After a few minutes, the color in Oliver's face had returned and he was clearly much better.   He opened his eyes slowly lay still for a long time before he decided to sit up. He looked around as if he were lost and noticed that all three of his teammates except for Luther were looking at him in surprise. "Why are you looking at me like that?"   "Are you all right?" Elena asked impatiently.   Oliver shifted his body and raised his arm to the light. "I’m feeling all right," he responded.   "You can move your arm. Do you feel any pain?" Elena was amazed by how quickly he was healed.   Sitting on a chair, Luther leaned forward and stood up, "The cell fluid speeds up stem cell activity. It basically heals the wound before the patient can feel it."   As Oliver asked what he missed, Luther handed three of the grim reaper's sharp feet to Oliver, Elena, and Frank.   "These are going to be the best weapons you’ll find out here for a while. I suggest you throw away whatever you were using before."   Elena was a little unsure. She poked it at the wall.   It smashed deep into the wall leaving a two-centimeter wide indentation.   "Is this thing real? That was a solid brick and I barely poked at it." Elena stared in disbelief, and everyone else was just as shocked.   Only Eric, with greed and envy in his eyes, remembered that the monster had four feet and Luther had only three of them. Luther was holding back from him.   Luther motioned them out and left the guard room. Eric was so insulted that he ignored him, and his hatred of Luther deepened.   "Luther, I want you dead." Eric stared maliciously after Luther as he walked out.   Although Luther was not cruel, he was never kind to the wicked.   The guardroom was at the entrance to the park, and Luther walked to a gate covered with blood and could see a restaurant across the way. The restaurant was a giant mess. The fire hydrant next to it was knocked sideways by a car with half of the body in the driver’s seat. The rest of the place was also stained with blood, and corpses were all over the place.   Looking up, this building was nine stories high, and there was a slanting "100" character near the top which was about to fall any minute. The words in the back were missing. A lot of wires protruded from top to bottom, and he could still see the gray marks left by the passage of time.   The Navarro restaurant.   "Even though we don't see the zombies, there are more dead bodies here than anywhere else. This looks to be a densely populated area."   Luther frowned. More corpses meant more zombies, but there were no zombies here. He began to worry.   Elena was afraid that he might misunderstand the danger here, so she quickly explained, "Luther, the police station is on the opposite side of the street. When doomsday hit us, our police department organized firefights against the zombies, so most of them were attracted to the station."   After hearing this explanation, Luther, still worried, glanced around and said, "Okay, let's go to the restaurant first. We’ll climb up to the rooftop from the safety corridor."   Luther took the headlamp out of his bag and put it on. After all, there was no electricity in the restaurant, and he might have to look in dark places.   Frank pulled a headlamp and flashlight from his backpack as well.   Luther noticed that his bag contained ropes, pulleys, and other equipment for aerial work.   "We collected these in case we’d need it to get into the station." As Luther peered into the bag, Oliver proudly showed off their loot.   "Yes," Luther approved, "Very good.”   Luther then said, "Although the restaurant doesn’t look dangerous from the outside, we have to be careful."   "Once we get into the restaurant, the corridor is going to be narrow it’ll be hard for me if I need to use my power for any reason. I only ask that you pay more attention to yourself and your surroundings. If you’re careless, don't blame me if I can't save you in time."   "Understood." Oliver piped up, and the others nodded.   Their leader was Oliver, but now Luther seemed to take the lead of even him. They did not feel strange about this, in fact, they were more than happy to follow his lead. They all puffed out their chests and stood up straight.   Luther seemed to have a natural charisma, strengthening the group, and encouraging them to move forward.
