Sebastian stood in front of the big mirror in his room, carefully buttoning the last button of his black shirt. The cold winter light came through the thin curtains, making the shiny marble floor look silver. He made each move slowly and carefully, not because he was nervous but because it helped calm the buzzing thoughts in his mind. His black leather duffel bag, which he had with him for years, stood closed next to the dresser. On top of it was a thin stack of trade documents. They included logistics, mineral rights, and a border treaty with a trader on New Mexico’s southern border. This was all typical business stuff, but the relief he felt from leaving the house was anything but ordinary. He needed this. He needed to breathe in a place where every hallway didn’t remind me of the past
