Chapter 9: Surrounded

974 Words
"...We're surrounded." The words echoed through the cafeteria like a death sentence. No one moved. No one even dared to breathe. The infected stood motionless, their pitch-black eyes fixed on the group. Blood dripped steadily from their noses, staining their torn uniforms and the cafeteria floor. Some twitched violently. Others tilted their heads at impossible angles, as if listening to voices only they could hear. Min-jae tightened his grip on the fire extinguisher. "Back up," he whispered. The students obeyed without question, taking slow, careful steps toward the doorway. One girl stumbled over a fallen chair. The loud clang shattered the silence. Every infected turned at once. A deafening screech filled the room. "They're coming!" someone shouted. The zombies lunged. "Run!" Min-jae swung the fire extinguisher with all his strength. It connected with the first infected, knocking it into a table. Plates and trays crashed to the floor. "Out! Move!" The students rushed through the doorway, but the infected poured after them. A boy near the back cried out as a zombie grabbed his backpack. The straps tightened around his shoulders, dragging him backward. "Help me!" Without thinking, Min-jae ran back. He slammed the extinguisher into the zombie's shoulder. Another infected reached for him, its black eyes only inches from his face. A classmate yanked the trapped boy free. "Min-jae!" He turned and sprinted after them. The cafeteria erupted into chaos behind them. The infected chased the students through the corridors, their growls echoing throughout the school. "Stairwell!" Min-jae shouted. The group rushed toward the emergency exit. One by one they slipped inside. Min-jae slammed the heavy metal door shut and shoved an iron bar through the handles. THUD! A body crashed against the other side. Then another. The entire door rattled. "We can't stay here," one student panted. "We're not," Min-jae replied. "We're going to the roof." "Why?" "If anyone is still searching for survivors, they'll see us." No one argued. Hope, however small, was worth chasing. --- Across the city... Seo-yeon sat beside Yuna inside the maintenance shed. The little girl had fallen asleep with her head resting on Seo-yeon's lap. Outside, the streets remained eerily quiet. Too quiet. Seo-yeon looked toward the doorway. "Ji-hoon's been gone a long time." Almost on cue, the door creaked open. "I'm back." She smiled in relief. "You scared me." "Sorry." He placed a small bag on the floor. "Canned food, bottled water... and this." He pulled out a folded paper map. "I found a route." Seo-yeon quickly spread it across the floor. "It avoids the main roads." Ji-hoon nodded. "The highways are packed with abandoned cars. We'll move through residential streets instead." Her eyes drifted toward the small red circle he'd drawn. "Haedong Boarding High School..." She swallowed hard. "We're close." "You'll see him." She looked at Ji-hoon. "You always believe that." "I have to." For a brief moment, the weight of the apocalypse seemed to disappear. They shared a quiet smile. Hidden beneath his sleeve, the scratch on Ji-hoon's arm burned again. This time he couldn't stop himself from flinching. "Ji-hoon?" He quickly looked away. "Just sore from swinging that pipe." Seo-yeon frowned but let it go. --- Clouds rolled across the afternoon sky. The three survivors carefully made their way through a narrow residential neighborhood. Every house they passed had been abandoned. Family photos still hung in windows. Laundry swayed gently in the wind. One front door stood wide open. Yuna stopped walking. "My teddy..." Seo-yeon looked down. "What is it?" "It looks like mine." Inside the house, a small stuffed bear lay on a sofa. Ji-hoon checked the doorway. "I'll make it quick." He stepped inside. The living room was untouched. Dinner plates still rested on the dining table. A television displayed nothing but static. He picked up the teddy bear. Just as he turned to leave... A faint laugh echoed upstairs. His smile disappeared. Another laugh. Followed by quiet sobbing. Then complete silence. Ji-hoon slowly backed toward the front door. He didn't need to see what was upstairs. He already knew. The family hadn't escaped. He hurried outside and handed the teddy bear to Yuna. Her eyes sparkled. "Thank you." She hugged it tightly. For the first time since losing her father, she smiled. Seo-yeon watched the moment quietly. Even in a broken world... Small acts of kindness still mattered. --- At the boarding school... The climb to the roof felt endless. Every landing echoed with distant growls. By the time Min-jae pushed open the rooftop door, the sun was beginning to set. Fresh air rushed over the exhausted students. One girl collapsed to her knees. "We made it..." Min-jae walked to the edge. His heart sank. The school grounds below were filled with infected. Hundreds of them wandered aimlessly between the buildings. There was no safe way out. A boy beside him laughed bitterly. "We're trapped." Min-jae stared toward the distant skyline. Smoke still rose from different parts of the city. Somewhere beyond those buildings... Seo-yeon was out there. He closed his eyes. "Please... be alive." As if answering his prayer, a faint sound drifted through the evening air. A helicopter. Everyone looked up. "It has to be rescue!" someone shouted. The students waved their jackets and screamed for help. The helicopter circled once. Lower. Lower still. Hope spread across every face. Then one of the students noticed something. "...Why isn't it landing?" The helicopter suddenly tilted. Dark figures clung to its landing skids. The infected. One climbed toward the cockpit. A gunshot echoed. Then another. The aircraft spun violently. "No..." Min-jae whispered. The helicopter disappeared behind a nearby building. A massive explosion shook the ground. The blast sent a column of fire into the sky. The rooftop fell silent. The last flicker of hope vanished with the smoke. Night was coming. And no one was coming to save them.
