Chapter 27: The peace keeping mission

1877 Words
Kai By a half past seven that evening Arthur was driving us through the tall painted soot black iron gates of the Watson manor. Sitting on a fourteen acre piece of land in the middle of an emerald green forest. From a distance, roughly a hundred Meters away from the gate the manor itself was lit up in different colors of yellow and white. It was calm, a few heartbeats could be heard from around. Mostly from the staff quarters on the left, mums scent was easily recognizable being the only supernatural around. The two were both kicking me out of the mind link. For a weird pack of three our greatest advantage was that mind link. We had perfected it up to our human forms. And kicking me out was evidence enough, my piece keeping mission was not going to be a walk in the park. "We're here dad, you're going to get out of the car or we going to sit here all night" we had been seating in the car for close to five minutes, in silence. On a normal day mum would have been there to welcome us in. "Just a minute" he said exhaling lazily. Dad and I were dressed uniformly in black suits. White shirts, black ties, marching black shoes with long black trench coats, leather gloves in our hands and scarfs around our necks. Our vampire like looks were finished by two cowboy huts. My old man cleared his throat repeatedly. The worst limitation of being a werewolf, we age like humans. Arthur opened the door for me while the butler got his and they walked behind us respectively like our aide-de-camps. We walked through the Double doors to an empty and quiet living room. "She really is pissed off at you dad" I said looking around, dad collapsed in his favorite chair, "sit tight let me fetch her" "Don't worry she will just walk down here herself" "Okay" I said and sat back. After all she was his wife. I never liked her as much as he did but we got along because of one thing in common. My dad. True to his word, after almost ten minutes of waiting in the living room yawning lazily and staring the hell out of the ceiling, TV and double winding stares that led upstairs, mum walked downstairs in a purple shift dress that made her look young and blossoming. She had that angry smirk on her face hidden with a lazy smile. "Always good to see you boys, am glad you could join me. Let's eat" she said pointing to the dining. Dad and I obediently got rid of our trench coats and walked across the room. She followed behind. The maids were setting up the dinner table. I could already spot red wine, fruit salad, fish and beef with a plateful of rice, chicken and my favorite berries, crimson seedless. Dad was the first one to wash and dry his hands by the sink-he had missed her cooking. He was followed by me and then mum was the last. Even without talking and reading their minds you could smell the anger and disdain they had for each other at that particular time. But that did not prevent us from eating and enjoying the meal. As the peace keeper I had no idea where to start but I had to break that ice barrier and spark a conversation, even an exchange of pleasantries for a couple who had not been together for a couple of days. It didn't matter if they didn't love each other dearly, I was missing Lynn already we were just friends with benefits as she called it. "Are we going to talk about you guys or what?" I asked thoughtfully chewing the rice pellets like a tropical bird. None of them said anything. As a matter of fact they were behaving as though I wasn't talking to them. "Okay, am also going to pretend like you're not mad at each other for a reason you won't let me know....how have you been mum?" "Fine, a few obstacles here and there but what's life without challenges" she said sending a knife through the meet with her eyes glued on dad. That was scary. "And you dad" "Fine too, headache lack of peace in this big houses..." "Am tired of this bullshit you two tell me what's going on or am gonna leave this delicious food on this table and walk out of this house forever!" I bellowed banging on the table. They stopped eating and looked at me keenly. Then you can imagine those two old as Methuselah parents of mine went back to eating. "Relax Kai...mummy and daddy are not separating we are just kidding" mum said cracking a smile. Dad couldn't hold back his wimpy rusty hinge like laughter. The sudden change of the mood got me looking like a fool. I couldn't believe they pranked me! That was my niche in the family pranking them...back then when we used to be something close to a family. Every Halloween it would end the same way, me laughing to my last teeth and mum and dad embarrassed. "You guys pranked me?" "Yeah, you should have seen his face!" Dad said amid laughter. "He bought it" mum said chuckling. Guess who was not chuckling? "You guys made me postpone my date because of a prank. How heartless can you be?" "We are your family too son!" "You don't have to remind me dad!" "It's not only about the prank, we also have some good news for you" Mum said. She glared at dad who stopped laughing. It was his first time so I guess he wasn't going to get over it anytime soon. "What else could it be?" "Marriage" Dad announced and I almost choked on my glass of wine. The topic I thought was never going to come had just been introduced moments after I got pranked. You can agree with me I was having one of those bad days. "What do you mean marriage?" "You need to marry. Situations might have changed, we don't live in the woods anymore but at the end of the day we are werewolves, we need a pack to survive to feel complete" "Where are you going with this dad?" "We are sorry you grew up in a modern city, like human. It's not your fault and we've given you enough time to look for a better half and it seems like you can't on your own and now we need to step in" mum said and she was using that courteous voice she used to use on me back when I was in school. I looked at the two of them and smiled nodding, they were amateurs at this. Two pranks, back to back in one day? Not on me the king of pranks the best “pranker” in the family, even if that's not English. "I see what you guys are doing" I said. "What?" "You're are trying to prank me again aren't you? Tell you what, it's not going to work this time" "Son this is not a prank. Your mum and I are serious here you need someone when we are gone. A pack, because a war is cooking you in the shadows and soon it might knock on your doorstep" That's when I realized they were serious. They let me in their minds and they had every sign of genuine in their body language. "Which war are you talking about dad, marriage and war?" "Our kind is still out there and so are the vampires and they are hunting us. You need a Luna to help you gather survivor's..." "Hold up, forget about the Marriage thing first, I thought we were driven to extinction dad. Our pack, we are the only survivors" "Assume what you're saying is correct, don't you think you need to start another pack and ensure continuity of our bloodline?" Mum sensed dad and I were drifting the conversation away from her and soon we were going to lock horns, the conversation was going to end up into an argument. Two alpha males with enormous egos. That was not good for any of us. "To cut the long story short, we've spotted a match for you. Perhaps not a mate but times are changing. Use your father and I as an example" Mum said and those words made my heart stop beating for minute and my body went numb. "She is a nice girl, and a witch. One of the remaining powerful witches you need her expertise..." "I might have lost a grip on werewolf history and culture but last time I checked witches and werewolves are not good friends. Don't you remember what Ariella did to us?" "They are our allies when we need them, you need her besides that enmity ended with the great war. You have a chance to rewrite a new chapter in history" "We are not saying you should agree right now Kai. Take your time, we will ask her parents to bring her. You two will meet and go out on a couple of dates and get to know each other" My mind was still trying to wrap itself around two things, marriage and two a mate to start a family with. Chosen by my parents who believed since their marriage was not built on love mine was also going to be just fine. Honestly, I was still convinced they were pranking me. Trying so hard to sell it. "You guys are aware that am dating Lynn right?" "You said she is not your mate. Your wolf side is just hyper when she comes around" Dad was quick to extinguish that. "Besides she is human and am sure you haven't told her about the real you" And that was their biggest argument. I was just not ready to tell her that once in a while at will I turned into this bloodthirsty reaper that could kill in minutes and not feel guilty about it. Not her. She was the nicest person I knew and like she said she did not want to regret pausing her life for me. "You can think about it son and give us an answer when you feel ready" mum said leaving her seat after I went to a long silence. She walked over to dad's seat and helped him up. "I have never asked much from you Kai. Your mum and I do not have long and am convinced something big is coming. I want you to be ready. This marriage can help you survive this storm, you're my only son and the only hope of rebuilding our pack. You won't be doing this for me, it's for us. Our future. Goodnight son" Dad said and the two of them walked upstairs holding hands. That's when I realized it was not a prank. My parents had found me a girl and I was supposed to marry her to save our bloodline. And it couldn't be Lynn because she was human. That night it was not my insomnia that was going to keep me up, it was the dilemma I was in.
