Chapter 5: A Dangerous Game Begins

1230 Words
Victor's voice, low and forceful, echoes around the room. He claims, "Lois will be required for the meeting." She is prepared. I stop. Though I don't know the purpose of this meeting, I can already sense its burden on my shoulders. He's drawing me more into the inner circle. And I don't know whether I can go away. Though it's quite risky, the draw I have for him is clear-cut. I have tried to ignore it and tell myself I am here to work. Staying in his presence makes it increasingly difficult to keep any sense of professionalism. His coldness is magnetic, charismatic. Whether I want it to or not, his dominance, his silent strength all pulls me in. The idea of him occupies my mind increasingly as the day goes, I find. It's not only his appearance, though he's certainly attractive, with sharp features and dark eyes that seem to see right through me, but rather the way he makes everything seem like it belongs to his design. His calm power permeates every nook of the office and I can feel myself being drawn into his orbit. Though I try to concentrate on the work in front of me, I can't help but think about how he has been gazing at me recently. His look has something that disturbs me, yet it also thrills me. I can no longer distinguish the two. Just as I'm ready to complete my daily tasks, I hear a familiar sound, Victor's measured, quiet footfall coming near my desk. "Lois," he murmurs softly and smoothly. I want you for something. My heart skips a beat. Standing only a few inches away, he is suddenly near. His cologne's aroma envelops me and draws me closer; I struggle to remain composed. "I'm ready," I declare, but even I can tell my voice wavers. Leaning in a little, his face inches from mine, he makes me forget how to breathe for a time. I want you this evening. Don't plan. Sitting in the chair opposite Victor's desk, the only thing disturbing the stillness is the soft hum of the office. Of course, he is already there; his presence is imposing and inescapable. There is something whispered in the dense air. I can feel the tension between us like an electric current and know I am on the verge of something beyond my control. His dark eyes are penetrating as he stares at me. "Are you certain you're prepared for this?" I pause. Slightly shaking are my hands, which have been clutching the chair's edge. "I'm ready," I repeat, but the words this time seem hollow. Victor rises and moves closer with slow, steady motion. Nowhere to hide exists. His presence overwhelms me. "I want you to stay," he adds gently, his voice low, like a whisper. I was beginning to put everything together. Victor's world was something deeper, not only about riches and power. I had sensed it in the heaviness of his words, in the intensity with which his gaze fixed on mine, in the slight changes in his attitude as he discussed particular corporate transactions. I could see now that his empire was founded on shadows, not just ambition; I was starting to walk into those shadows myself. The more I dealt with him, the more I began to see things. Misplaced papers, quiet hallway discussions, covert meetings held off the record. Initially, I dismissed it as being normal for the corporate machine; but, something told me it was more than that. A persistent sensation I couldn't get rid of. One late afternoon, just as I was leaving his office, I caught wind of something. Drifting through the door's c***k, his low, measured voice Though I shouldn't have been eavesdropping, I couldn't help it. Victor remarked quietly, "We'll have to deal with this quietly." The less knowledge it spreads among others, the better. Should this leak, it's finished. Though the discussion went on, my thoughts had already snapped into focus. He wasn't only discussing a corporate transaction. There was something more, something risky. With my back against the wall, I gasped. The walls seemed to be closing in on me. I had been drawn into something far deeper than I could have thought. I wished to leave, to turn around and act as though I had heard nothing, but I was unable to. It was impossible for me to unhear it. Returning to my desk, I discovered an envelope there. It came from Victor. Just a task I understood would draw me even closer to whatever secret Victor was concealing; no justification. My pulse raced as I looked through the contents and opened the envelope carefully. One name. A location. Then a moment. The specifics were hazy, but I could sense the burden of the work. He was drawing me into his inner circle. Now there was no turning back. The sinking sensation in my chest could hardly be ignored. This was no longer merely a profession. I was a part of something far larger than myself, something I wasn't certain I could flee from. Standing in front of Victor's office door, the darkness hung heavy in the air. His desk lamp's illumination created deep shadows and made me hesitate for the first time since starting this employment. Running my fingertips over the chilly brass handle, I felt the impending weight and my heart raced. I had come to a crossroads. What I had discovered about Victor, about his company, had really disturbed me. I had walked into a web of power and deception, one I had chosen, but now... now it was different. The more I got to know him, the more I saw that there were no obvious solutions. My emotions for Victor were knotted in the enigma, in the dark appeal he offered. I was in too deep, not knowing whether it was want, dread, or something else entirely. I knew too much to leave, but the idea of remaining also pained me. Victor's eyes shot up from his work as I opened the door to his office, a hint of astonishment showing on his face. Always calm, he was always in charge. But his look tonight was different; it was... gentler. Perhaps he could feel the chaos within me. "Lois," he added quietly, almost as if to acknowledge something unspoken. Come inside. We have to speak. I entered, my feet weighted with doubt. Though he was sitting behind his desk, I didn't sense the distance this time. The air was heavy and I could sense the tension all around us. Victor remarked, his voice calm but tinged with something deeper, "You've been acting strangely." I can feel it. You know more than you are revealing. I paused, not knowing what to do next. Should I challenge him? Should I fight for the truth? Should I follow the road I had begun, believing him and disregarding the warning signs? His gaze fixed on me, I could sense the draw once more. Lois, you have no option. Lois, you have no option. Your life is now this. His remarks struck me like a gut punch. This was unavoidable. Not any more. I was already too deep, too caught up in his world to ever leave. Though still strong and possessive, Victor's look softened. You will be alright. You will come to accept it.
