Chapter 3: The Ultimate Betrayal
Maya
The sting of Caleb's slap still burned hot across my cheek hours later, but the wound in my heart cut far deeper. I had spent two days locked in my room, replaying that moment over and over like a nightmare I couldn't escape. The sharp c***k of his palm. Kate's hidden smirk. The way he had chosen her without hesitation, believing her lies over everything we had shared.
I couldn't stay hidden forever. I needed answers. I needed to look the man I had loved for fifteen years in the eyes and ask how our shared dreams could shatter so easily over a maid's manipulations.
My hands trembled as I reached for the handle of Caleb's bedroom door. I didn't knock. I just wanted the truth.
I pushed the door open.
The words died in my throat. The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet as my brain struggled to process the scene in front of me.
Caleb was there. And so was Kate.
They were tangled together in his sheets, lost in passion. Kate was on her back, her legs wrapped tightly around his waist. Caleb's hands gripped her hips as he thrust into her, his head buried in her neck. The rhythmic sound of skin against skin filled the room, mixed with Kate's high-pitched, exaggerated moans.
"Oh, Caleb… yes… right there…" Kate gasped, her nails digging into his back. "Don't stop… please don't stop…"
Caleb groaned, his pace quickening. "You're so perfect, Kate. No one has ever made me feel like this."
"You're the only one I care about," he murmured against her neck, completely oblivious to me standing there. "Maya could never compare to you. She's just… I only stayed because of my father."
I couldn't breathe. It felt as if someone had driven a blade straight into my chest and twisted it slowly. The room grew unbearably hot. I stared, frozen in shock, as the boy who had promised me forever—the one I had trusted since childhood—destroyed everything we had built.
Kate noticed me first. Her eyes flicked to mine, and instead of pulling away in shame, a slow, triumphant smirk spread across her face. She let out a louder moan, deliberately locking her gaze with mine as she wrapped her arms tighter around Caleb's neck.
"Faster, Caleb…" she purred. "Show me how much better I am than her."
She wanted me to see this. She wanted to break me completely. And in that moment, she was succeeding.
My hands flew to my mouth, pressing hard to hold back the wave of nausea rising in my throat. Was this real? Every whispered "I love you," every plan we had made for our future—had it all been a lie?
Unable to contain the agony tearing through me any longer, I stepped fully into the room. My voice came out hoarse and broken, barely above a whisper, but it sliced through the air.
"You're really shameless, Caleb."
Caleb froze mid-motion. His head whipped toward me, his hazel eyes widening in absolute panic. He scrambled away from Kate, grabbing the nearest blanket to cover himself, his face draining of all color.
"M-Maya," he stammered, voice cracking. "W-What are you doing here?"
I laughed bitterly, the sound harsh and broken even to my own ears. Tears spilled over my cheeks unchecked. "Why? You didn't expect me to walk in on this? You didn't think I would find out?"
Kate sat up slowly, completely unbothered. She stretched like a satisfied cat, not even bothering to cover herself. "Well, well, well," she drawled, her voice dripping with mockery. "If it isn't the little Omega. Did you enjoy the show? I hope you took notes."
My hands clenched into fists at my sides, nails biting into my palms. "You disgusting snake. You've been plotting this from the moment you set foot in this pack."
Kate laughed lightly, the sound cruel and light. "Plotting? Please. I just had to be better than you. And that wasn't hard at all." She looked me up and down with pure disdain. "Look at you. Shaking like a leaf. Your hands are trembling. Your voice is cracking. No wonder he came to me. You're weak, Maya. You've always been weak."
Caleb shook his head frantically, pulling on his clothes in a desperate rush. "No. No, Maya, please… it's not what it looks like."
"Not what it looks like?" I repeated, my voice rising with raw pain and anger. "You are cheating on me with our maid. A rogue. A weak wolf. And you have the audacity to stand there and tell me it's not what it looks like? I saw you, Caleb. I saw you inside her. I heard what you said. You said I could never compare to her."
He opened his mouth, but no words came out. The anger on his face crumbled into shame and regret.
Kate rolled her eyes, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. "Oh, stop with the dramatics. You saw exactly what was happening. He chose me. He wanted me. End of story."
"Stay out of this!" I snapped at her.
Kate stood up and walked toward me slowly, stopping just inches from my face. Her smile was sharp and vicious. "You're not special, Maya. You're just a stray he found in the woods. A pathetic little healer who can't even defend herself."
She leaned closer, lowering her voice to a poisonous whisper. "And I'm going to take everything from you. Your mate. Your status. Your future. There's nothing you can do to stop me."
I wanted to slap her. I wanted to scream until my throat bled. I wanted to tear her apart with my bare hands. But I held myself back, refusing to give her the satisfaction of seeing me break completely.
Caleb stepped forward and gripped my shoulders tightly, his eyes desperate and pleading. "Maya, I'm so sorry. I don't know how it happened. My father was gone, Lucas was distant, and there was just too much pressure. I needed a release. I needed someone. And then she sat with me. We talked. From a brief kiss, it just escalated. I couldn't hold back."
A small, pathetic part of me still loved him despite the roaring fury in my blood. But that part was dying—slowly, painfully—and I was letting it.
"Maya, I didn't mean to hurt you," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Please… can't we forget this happened? Can't we go back to how things were?"
I stared at him—the man I had loved for fifteen years. The man who had just shattered my world.
"I heard what you told her," I said quietly, my voice trembling. "I heard you say she's the only one you want to mark. That if it wasn't for Alpha Ian, you would never come close to me. Was that a lie too?"
Caleb dropped his hands from my shoulders and stepped back. His face went deathly pale. "That was—I was just talking nonsense. Don't think about it. Please just forgive me."
I didn't believe him. I could see the truth in his eyes. He had meant every single word.
Kate stood by the door, watching us with that satisfied smirk. "Oh, please forgive him, Maya. He's only a man. Alpha males have needs. And you were never going to satisfy them."
I turned to her, my voice ice-cold and steady for the first time. "You think you've won, Kate. But you haven't. I will not let you break me."
Kate laughed, sharp and cruel. "You're already broken, Maya. You just don't know it yet."
I wanted to argue. I wanted to tell her she was wrong. But the words wouldn't come.
She turned and walked out, leaving me alone with Caleb.
I looked at him one last time. The boy I used to know—the one who had protected me and made me feel safe—was gone. In his place stood a stranger who had hit me, cheated on me, and chosen her.
"I can't do this right now, Caleb," I whispered, my voice barely holding together. "I need time alone." I paused, staring into the eyes of the person I thought I knew. "Mostly from you."
"Maya—" He tried to step closer.
"Don't touch me!" I snapped, backing away sharply. "Don't you dare touch me."
He flinched and froze in place.
I turned around and walked out, tears streaming down my face. A strange numbness settled over me as I moved down the grand hallway. I wasn't going to run away. I wasn't going to let Kate win by leaving.
But I was done. No more tears for Caleb. No more hoping he would change. No more forgiving the unforgivable.
He had hit me. He had betrayed me with Kate. He had shown me exactly who he was.
And I believed him now.
I would stay until my 18th birthday. I would clear the way for him and Kate if that was what he wanted. And then I would walk away.
Forever.
