Chapter 5: The Wrong Room
Lucas
I stared at the beautiful sight sprawled across my bed, wearing nothing but red lingerie that left very little to the imagination.
Why the hell was Maya here?
I had tried my best to stay away from her for years, despite the feelings I could never fully bury. I knew those feelings were never going to be reciprocated. She had always been head over heels for Caleb. It was almost like an obsession. She followed him around like he was the sun and she was desperate for his warmth. I had come to terms with that reality long ago and accepted it, no matter how much it carved out pieces of me.
Don't get me wrong—it wasn't like I had stopped loving her. That part of me still existed, unfortunately. It had been there for as long as I could remember. That was why it was so hard for me to get close to any other woman, despite the endless parade of them thrown at my feet from powerful families. Beautiful, willing, eager. None of them were her.
The truth was simpler: I refused to settle for one-sided love. I had deliberately distanced myself over the years, turning cold and distant to protect what little remained of my heart. I built walls brick by brick, year by year, until the space between us felt like an unbridgeable chasm. It killed me to see her with Caleb—to see her laugh at his jokes, light up when he entered a room, believe every empty promise he made. But I endured it. I didn't want to create mess or toxicity in the family, especially with how highly my father thought of me. Most importantly, I wanted her to be happy. And if Caleb was the one who made her happy, then I would step back and let her have that, no matter how much it destroyed me inside.
I had trained myself to be untouchable. To look away from temptation. To feel nothing when women threw themselves at me. I had convinced myself I was above it all.
But tonight, that control was shattering.
Maya lay sprawled across my bed like a vision from every forbidden dream I had ever suppressed. Her green eyes were slightly open, hazy with alcohol, yet they traced slowly down my body with deliberate heat, as if she was seeing me, really seeing me—for the first time. The red lingerie hugged her slim waist, accentuated her long, toned legs, and barely contained her full breasts. The duvet had slipped off completely, leaving her exposed and vulnerable in the most devastating way.
I crossed my arms tightly over my chest and stared down at her. My jaw clenched so hard it ached.
I tried to turn away. I really did. My mind screamed at me to grab clothes and leave the room entirely. But my body refused to obey. Instead, I found myself drinking in every detail—the way her chest rose and fell with each breath, the soft curve of her hips, the way her skin glowed in the low light.
The way her eyes lingered on me made the muscle in my jaw tick violently.
Maya had always possessed the kind of body that could make even the strongest alpha lose his mind. Slim waist that flared into generous hips. Legs that seemed to go on forever. Breasts that strained against the delicate lace, perfect and inviting. The lingerie clung to her like a second skin, accentuating every curve in ways that made my blood run hot.
And I couldn't force myself to look away.
Her eyes fluttered open wider. Her soft, full lips parted slightly.
"W-What are you doing in my room," she slurred, her voice thick with alcohol, "and why are you staring at me?"
She took another slow, appraising glance at me, her expression hazy but unmistakably intent.
"Are you trying to seduce me?"
For a brief moment, a small, playful smile curved her lips. It hit me like a punch to the gut—innocent yet dangerously seductive.
Damn it. What was that?
I raised an eyebrow, confusion warring with the heat building in my veins. Had she hit her head before stumbling into my room? She was the one lying on my bed. Practically naked. And she was accusing me of trying to seduce her.
Who the hell was seducing who in this situation?
I ran a hand through my still-damp hair, muttering under my breath. "I don't have the patience for childish behavior right now, Maya. Get dressed."
Whatever wild thoughts were running through her alcohol-addled mind, I wanted no part of the disaster they would create. I had spent years maintaining careful distance. One single drunk mistake could unravel everything I had built to protect both of us.
I turned toward the closet where I kept spare clothes, determined to end this before it went any further.
But before I could take more than a single step, I felt her soft hands wrap around my waist from behind. Her fingers were dangerously close to the edge of the towel that barely clung to my hips.
I froze completely at the sudden, electric contact. Warmth spread from her palms across my skin. I looked down slowly at her hands, then back at her face, heart pounding harder than it had any right to.
"Please don't go," she whispered, her voice cracking with raw vulnerability that twisted something deep inside my chest. "Don't leave me again. I didn't agree to give you my V-card until after the engagement. That's why you keep hurting me, right?"
I tilted my head slightly, completely thrown. Who was she talking to? The words didn't make sense in context.
"Do you have any idea how much I'm hurting?" she continued, her voice trembling as fresh tears welled in her eyes. "Why do you all keep choosing her over me?"
Her hands tightened around my waist, holding me in place. Her face moved dangerously close to my hips, her hot breath ghosting across my skin and sending unwanted jolts of pleasure straight through me.
She pulled back just enough for me to see her face clearly. Her eyes were half-lidded and glassy with unshed tears and alcohol.
"Am I not attractive enough?" she breathed, the question so soft and broken it nearly undid me. "Why am I always left behind?"
Fuck. If she was trying to tempt me, she was succeeding beyond anything I had imagined.
How could she even doubt her own beauty? For someone who had seen more women than I cared to count, Maya wasn't just attractive—she was breathtaking. She was perfection. The kind of beauty that haunted a man's dreams and ruined him for anyone else. But I couldn't tell her that. I couldn't let her know how deeply she still affected me after all these years.
Her fingers reached for the edge of the towel slowly, tugging lightly and exposing more of me as she leaned forward on the bed. She bit her lower lip—that old, dangerous habit she had never grown out of. Every single time she did it, my carefully constructed control cracked a little more.
I was getting painfully hard despite every rational part of my brain screaming at me to stop this immediately. Every coherent thought was drowning under the overwhelming sensation of her touch, her voice, her scent, her eyes.
I don't know what surprised me more: the bold way she was looking at me or how quickly my legendary patience was evaporating.
My gaze darkened with a mix of desire and frustration.
This couldn't be good. Not for either of us.
