Chapter 6 — The Safe Suite

2082 Words
For a long moment, Aliyah didn’t move. Adrian’s words still hung in the air, sharp and heavy, like they’d split her world clean in two. Walk away from me. Or stay, knowing who I am. A choice she wasn’t ready for. A choice she didn’t ask for. Her breath trembled. “Adrian,” she whispered, “I don’t even know how to process any of this.” He stepped back. Not much, but enough that she felt the distance like a sudden drop in temperature. “I know,” he replied, voice low. “I’m not asking you to decide now. I just need you safe today.” She hugged her arms around herself. “Why today specifically? What’s happening today?” Adrian hesitated. His jaw flexed. “The Syndicate is having a meeting,” he said quietly. “My father is calling every branch together.” “Because of me?” “No,” he said firmly. “Because someone attacked you to get to me. And that means someone within the organization may be acting without permission.” Aliyah swallowed. That didn’t comfort her. Not even a little. “Will they come here?” she asked. Adrian shook his head. “Not if they know what’s good for them.” His tone was soft, but the threat beneath it was cold enough to freeze air. “Adrian,” she breathed, “you can’t protect me from an entire… criminal empire. Not forever.” He didn’t flinch. “I can.” She stared at him, stunned by the raw certainty in his voice. “ It's truly impossible.” His silver-gray eyes held hers, steady and unwavering. “I can! I have to, because I’m not just part of it,” he said quietly. “I’m next in line to run it.” Her heart dropped to her stomach. “You’re— you’re the heir?” A slow, reluctant nod. Aliyah felt the ground tilt under her feet. Everything made sense now. The way Rafe spoke to him. The tension. The danger. The attack. The way Adrian shielded her like she was something priceless. She sank down onto the edge of the bed, the weight of the revelation crushing her. Adrian didn’t touch her. Didn’t try to comfort her. He just stood there, watching her like she was the one thing in the room he didn’t know how to control. Aliyah finally looked up with her voice small. “So what do you want me to do today?” Adrian exhaled softly. “Stay where I can see you. Here… or with me.” “With you, where?” “The meeting.” She shot to her feet. “Absolutely not!” A hint of amusement ghosted across his face. Sad, fleeting, but real. “I didn’t say I wanted to take you. I just said it was an option.” “How is that an option? That sounds like the worst possible plan.” “It is,” he agreed calmly. “That’s why I’d rather keep you here.” Her frustration flared. “And if someone comes looking for me while you’re gone?” “They won’t.” “You can’t promise—” Adrian’s voice sharpened, not with anger, but with something close to pain. “Aliyah, I swear in my life—no one will come near you..., again...” Her breath hitched. He wasn’t being dramatic. He wasn’t using a figure of speech. He meant it literally. Before she could respond, his phone buzzed. His eyes flicked to the screen. Something in his posture changed instantly. Aliyah tensed. “What is it?” He didn’t answer right away. He slid the phone back into his pocket, jaw tight. “There’s… some movements,” he said after a moment. “One of our watchers saw a car circling the block.” “Circling?” Aliyah whispered. “A black sedan,” Adrian murmured. “Tinted windows. No plates.” “What does that mean?” He didn’t sugarcoat it. “It means trouble.” Her knees wobbled. Immediately, Adrian stepped forward, trying to reach her out but stopping just inches from her arm. “Aliyah,” he said quietly, “look at me.” She forced her eyes up. “No one touches you,” he said. “Not while I’m breathing.” A shiver went through her. Not of fear, but of the terrifying comfort that his presence gave her. “Come with me,” he said softly. “Just for now.” “To do what?” Her voice quivered. “To get you somewhere safer in the apartment.” He held out a hand. Not grabbing, not demanding, but just offering. And somehow… the gentleness scared her more than anything else. After a moment that felt like the world holding its breath, she placed her hand in his. His fingers closed around hers delicately… like he was afraid she might break. He led her through a hallway she hadn’t explored yet. Past the living room. Past the kitchen. To a reinforced steel door she hadn’t noticed before. Painted with the same color as the wall. Adrian pressed his palm to a hidden scanner. The lock clicked. He glanced back at her. “This is where you stay if anything happens.” She peered inside. It wasn’t a bunker. It was a second living space. Smaller, cozier, and heavily fortified. Its walls were thicker. Its windows were bulletproof. And its security system looked like something out of a movie. Aliyah swallowed. “You have… a panic room?” “More like a safe suite,” he corrected. “With supplies, cameras, and emergency exits.” She stared at him. “Who lives at places like this, Adrian?” He didn’t answer, but she did. “A mafia heir, of course.” Pain flickered across his expression. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. Her breath trembled. “Don’t apologize. I just… don’t know what I’m supposed to be right now.” He stepped closer. This time, he didn’t hide the emotion in his eyes. He didn’t hide the fear. The longing. The regret. “You’re supposed to be safe,” he said, “... that’s all.” “But what am I to you?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. His breath hitched. He reached out slowly, touching her cheek with the back of his fingers, soft as a whisper. “You’re the first thing I’ve wanted in years that isn’t tainted,” he murmured. Her heart twisted painfully. “That doesn’t answer my question.” “Because I’m afraid,” he admitted. “Afraid of what?” “Of what happens if I say it.” Her pulse pounded in her ears. Before she could respond, his phone buzzed again. This time, he checked it immediately. His expression changed. Darkened, and sharpened. “What?” she whispered. He looked at her with eyes full of warning. “They’re at the building.” Aliyah’s heart stopped. “Who? Who’s here?” Adrian moved in front of her, positioning his body like a shield. “Aliyah,” he said quietly. “Into the safe suite. Now.” Her hand trembled. He cupped her cheek just once. “I’ll be right outside,” he whispered. “I won’t let them take a single step toward you.” Her throat tightened with fear. “Adrian, I'm literally scared right now. So, can you not go?” He softened at her plea. “I have to go.” His forehead nearly touched hers. “But hear me,” he murmured. “I will not let anything happen to you. Even if I have to lay down my life.” Her breath caught. She didn’t know how or when it happened, but she grabbed his shirt and pulled him closer, her voice breaking. “Please come back to me.” Adrian froze. Very carefully, like she was something he had no right to hold, he wrapped an arm around her waist and drew her in. His voice was a whisper against her hair. “I will.” Then he pulled away and the steel door clicked shut between them. ADRIAN’S POV The moment the door sealed, I lost the luxury of hesitation. I wasn’t Adrian-the-man anymore. I was Adrian Lysander. The next heir. The one responsible for keeping order. But when Aliyah whispered come back to me… Something inside me broke open. Something I’d spent years burying. She said it like she needed me. Like I mattered. And damn me, but I wanted to matter to her. I moved down the hall quietly, pulling the gun from the drawer hidden behind the console table. A sleek, black Beretta. I hated using it. Which made me a rarity in my family. Rafe liked guns too much. My father liked power even more. My cousins liked fear. My uncles liked blood. But me? I only ever lifted a gun for one reason. To protect. And right now, the only thing I wanted to protect was sitting behind a steel door, scared because of me. Footsteps echoed from the other side of the penthouse. Slow, heavy, and Intentional. They weren’t sneaking. They wanted me to know they were coming. I moved silently, staying in the shadows until I reached the corner. And then I saw him. Dmitri Volkov. Not Syndicate, but affiliated. A lapdog of one of our allied families. Loyal when convenient, treacherous when profitable. And here he was. In my home, trespassing. “Dmitri,” I called out, stepping into view. He turned and grinned. “Adrian,” he drawled in a thick accent. “I was hoping I’d find you.” “You were told never to come to this floor.” “Ah,” he shrugged. “Rules change.” He smirked and spread his arms. “What can I say? Word travels fast. The Lysander heir hiding a woman like a secret treasure makes a man curious.” My blood ran cold. He knew. “I won’t ask you again,” I said quietly, raising my weapon. “Why are you here?” His smile faded. “You’ve made enemies, Adrian. Someone wants leverage over you.” “You’re not taking her.” “I don’t need to,” he said with a shrug. “Just a look. A name. A description. Enough to pass along.” My grip tightened. “Not happening.” Dmitri laughed. “And you think you can stop—” I fired. One shot. A shot not to kill but to warn. The bullet hit the wall inches from his ear. His smile dropped instantly. I stepped forward, voice cold as ice. “If you ever come near this apartment again… if you ever speak her into existence… I’ll put a bullet between your eyes.” Dmitri swallowed hard. “I’ll tell them nothing,” he muttered. “But Adrian… the Syndicate is swirling. If they learn you’ve grown a weakness—” “I don’t have weaknesses,” I snapped. He raised an eyebrow. “Then what exactly is she?” My heart twisted. But I didn’t let it show. I pressed the barrel to his forehead. “She,” I said, “is none of your damn business.” A long pause. Then Dmitri backed away. “Fine. Fine,” he muttered, putting his hands up. “I’ll leave. But Adrian… the storm is coming.” He turned and walked out, not daring to look back. I waited until he was gone… Then I exhaled the breath I’d been holding. And only then did I let myself walk back toward the safe suite. Aliyah was on the other side of that door, terrified. And it was all because of me. Because of my world. Because someone saw her as leverage. My hand trembled, not from fear, but from the violence I’d held back. I pressed my palm to the scanner. The door unlocked. She stood there, eyes wide, face pale, and hands shaking. “Adrian?” she whispered. I stepped inside. And when her knees buckled, I caught her before she fell. Her hands clutched my shirt. “You came back,” she breathed. My throat tightened. “I told you I would,” I whispered, holding her close. “I always will.” And for the first time in years… I meant it with everything in me.
