Chapter 9 — The Other Safehouse

Aliyah felt the shift before she understood it. Alexei’s hands tightened around the wheel. Adrian leaned forward, muscles coiling. His eyes narrowing into the rear window. The SUV behind them didn’t turn. Didn’t slow. Didn’t hide. It followed like a predator that had already tasted blood. “Alexei,” Adrian said, voice calm but deadly, “You have to lose them.” “Working on it,” Alexei muttered. The car behind them accelerated. Aliyah’s nails dug into the seat. “Oh God... oh God, they’re coming after us.” Adrian grabbed her hand immediately, squeezing hard. “Aliyah. Look at me.” She couldn’t because her eyes were glued to the headlights growing closer behind them. “Aliyah,” he repeated, voice sharp but not with anger. “Look at me.” She tore her gaze from the window and met his. His face was steady and controlled. But his eyes… they were burning. “You’re safe,” he whispered. “I won’t let anything happen to you.” Her breath caught. “You can’t promise that.” “Yes,” he murmured, brushing a thumb over her knuckles, “I can.” Tires screeched as Alexei swerved hard into a narrow side street. Aliyah screamed, clinging to Adrian. The SUV behind them followed too close. “Alexei, what’s ahead?” Adrian demanded. “Dead end.” Aliyah’s heart plummeted. “A dead end? Alexei—” “I know, young lady,” he snapped, “I know.” The looming brick wall rushed toward them. “Alexei!” Adrian barked. “I see it!” The car behind them sped up. Aliyah’s chest tightened to the point of pain. No air. No breath. Just fear. Pure, choking fear. Adrian noticed instantly. He turned fully toward her and cupped her face. “Stay with me,” he whispered urgently. “Aliyah. Stay with me! Llisten to my voice.” Tears spilled down her cheeks. “I—I can’t—” “Of course, you can,” he whispered fiercely. “You breathe with me. Right here. Right now.” He pressed his forehead to hers, noses brushing. “Adrian—” “Nothing won't happen to you tonight,” he murmured. “I swear it.” The car jerked left. Alexei slammed the brakes, twisted the wheel, and shot into a narrow alley to the right of the dead end. The SUV behind them scraped the brick edge, showering sparks. Aliyah gasped. Her heart plummeting, and stomach twisting violently. Alexei growled something in Russian, jerking the wheel again. The alley ended in a ramp-like dip that spilled onto a deserted service road. The car hit the slope hard, lifting off the ground before crashing back down. Aliyah flew forward. Adrian grabbed her, shielding her body with his arms. The pursuing SUV landed even harder, fishtailing behind them. “I can't lose them,” Alexei muttered. “They’re glued to us. These guys are trained.” “Then go faster,” Adrian ordered. “I’m driving a heavy tank, not a damn jet!” Aliyah sobbed, gripping Adrian’s jacket. “I—I can’t do this. I just can’t…” Adrian pulled her against his chest, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “You’re doing so well,” he whispered. “I'm trying, but still can't help it—” “I know.” His lips brushed the top of her head. “And you’re allowed to be.” Something wet hit his shirt. Her tears. Her voice broke. “I don’t want to die. Not yet.” Adrian’s body tensed. He pulled her closer. One hand on her back, the other sliding up to cradle her head. “You won’t,” he breathed. “I won’t let that happen. Ever.” The SUV slammed into a pothole. The impact rattled her bones. “Alexei!” Adrian barked. “I see it—hang on!” Another sharp turn. Another jolt that sent her crashing into Adrian’s chest. Her fingers clung to him desperately, knuckles white. He stroked her hair, murmuring soft, broken things she couldn’t fully hear. “умница…” “Сладкая…” “Hold on, darling…” She’d never heard him speak Russian so softly. The tone made her shiver. “Adrian,” she whispered, voice cracking, “I—I can’t stop shaking…” He kissed her forehead. Swift, fierce, and unthinking. “I’ve got you.” Her heart stuttered. Even in fear, she felt the warmth of him wrapped around her like a shield. It didn’t make sense. None of this did. Why did he care this much? The pursuing SUV suddenly swerved to the side, trying to cut them off. “Not good,” Alexei muttered. “It’s trying to force a crash,” Adrian said. “Speed up.” “I’m trying,” Alexei hissed. Adrian slid a hand behind Aliyah’s head again, pulling her down to his chest. “Stay down.” “But you—” “Don’t argue, Aliyah.” His tone was so commanding, so protective, that she obeyed without thinking. Shots rang out. Gunfire. Aliyah screamed, curling into Adrian. His body caged around her instantly, shielding her completely. Alexei cursed loudly. “They brought guns? Really? Just fantastic—” “Lose them!” Adrian roared. “I’m TRYING!” Adrian’s hand tightened on Aliyah’s back. “Don’t lift your head.” She was sobbing openly now. He kissed the top of her hair. Quick, harsh, and desperate. “It’s okay. I’m right here.” Bullets pinged against metal. Glass cracked. She screamed again. Adrian crushed her tighter. “I need you to breathe, Aliyah, please. Please breathe.” Her voice came out broken. “Why are they doing this? Why—why me?” He exhaled unsteadily. “Aliyah... ” Her heart broke open. Before she could speak— Alexei shouted, “Hold on!” The SUV swerved sharply, barreling through a construction barricade. The vehicle behind them misjudged the angle. It spun. Tires screeched. Metal tore. Then an explosive crash echoed behind them. Aliyah winced at the sound, trembling violently. Alexei didn’t slow down. Adrian didn’t loosen his hold. Silence slowly filled the car. Thick, heavy, and buzzing with the aftermath of adrenaline. Finally, when the road smoothed, Aliyah peeled herself away from Adrian’s chest, shaking uncontrollably. He grabbed her face gently. “Are you hurt?” “No,” she whispered. “Just—terrified.” He exhaled shakily, thumb brushing a tear from her cheek. “I’m so sorry.” She stared at him, at the softness in his eyes despite the danger still lingering. “Why did you have to risk everything?” she whispered. He looked away, jaw tight, eyes full of something raw and painful. “I told you,” he murmured. “You’re the one thing I can’t lose.” Her breath hitched. “But... ” He looked back at her then his voice was almost a confession. "I told you I’ve known you longer than you think.” Her heart pounded. “Where are we going now?” she asked shakily. “To another safehouse,” Alexei answered. “One only two people know about. And it's me,” Alexei said. “And me,” Adrian added. Aliyah’s pulse quickened. “So I’ll be alone with you two?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Is that a problem?” he asked softly. She swallowed. “No... I guess” He leaned closer, just enough that she felt his breath. “Good,” he whispered. “Because I’m not letting you out of my sight after what happened.” Her stomach fluttered. Alexei turned onto a hidden dirt road surrounded by trees. Adrian’s hand remained on her. Protective, steady, and warm. Until they pulled up to a secluded cabin tucked deep in the woods. No lights except a single lantern on the porch. Adrian helped her out of the SUV. His hands steady on her waist. Alexei immediately began checking the perimeter. Adrian didn’t let go of her until they reached the door. Inside, it was quiet. Warm. And safe. Her legs gave out the moment the door shut. She started to crumble. And Adrian caught her before her knees touched the floor. Her face buried into his chest. His arms wrapped around her like she was something breakable but irreplaceable. And Aliyah began to sob harder than she ever had. Everything finally spilled out. The fear, confusion, shock, heartbreak, and longing. All of it crashing through her like a storm. “Adrian…” she choked out. “I—I was so scared. I thought I was going to die—” His embrace tightened. His voice trembled into her hair. “I know. I know, sweetheart. I’m so sorry. I’m so damn sorry.” She clung to him like he was the only thing keeping her anchored. He stroked her back, whispering to her through her sobs. “I’ve got you… you’re safe now… I’m here.” She cried until her body shook. He didn’t let go. Not once. Eventually, her sobs softened into broken breaths. Adrian tilted her face up gently, wiping her tears with his thumbs. His voice was barely a whisper. “You don’t have to be strong. I’ll be strong for you.” Her breath caught at the tenderness in his words. “Why do you care so much?” His eyes softened, then hardened, like the truth hurt to hold inside. “As I was always saying, losing you terrifies me more than any enemy ever could.” Aliyah’s heart clenched. He pressed his forehead to hers. Their breaths mingled. Their lips hovered so close it hurt not to close the distance. “Adrian…” she whispered. His voice dropped lower. “Tell me to stop.” But she didn't. Her fingers traced along his jaw, trembling. “I don’t want you to stop.” His breath shuddered out. His hands slid to her waist, gripping gently but firmly. “Then I won’t,” he whispered. And for one suspended moment, as they're lost in danger, fear, and desire, they stood on the edge of something impossible to turn back from. Something dangerous, yet beautiful and real. Something neither of them could deny anymore.
