Chapter 1: Mask of Perfection

381 Words
Serena had spent years building a life of perfection, but every day felt like a performance. Beautiful, brilliant, and poised, she managed to fit in with the wealthy elite at her school. But behind her mask, she knew she didn’t belong. Her past, full of danger and betrayal, was something she’d buried deep inside, only to be haunted by it every time she received an unsettling message. The message on her phone was different this time. "I’ve been watching you. It’s only a matter of time before I find you." She knew exactly who it was. The voice from her past. Damien Cross. The door knocked, and her breath hitched. She opened it, half-expecting it to be one of the many dangers she had tried to outrun. But standing in her doorway was Damien, looking every bit the mafia king he was—dark, brooding, and impossibly handsome. The air in the room thickened instantly. His eyes scanned her up and down, and there was something in his gaze—something possessive. The man she had once known, the one who had both terrified and mesmerized her, stood before her like a ghost from the past. “Serena,” he whispered, his voice like a caress. “I didn’t think it would take this long to find you.” She barely found her voice. “What do you want, Damien?” He stepped closer, his body radiating an intimidating presence. “I’ve come to make sure you’re safe. But you’re not just in danger from them... You’re in danger from me too.” The air between them crackled, charged with unspoken desire and threat. Her heart hammered as he reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her skin. It was a simple touch, but the intensity was enough to make her blood run hot. Serena took a step back, her pulse racing. "No," she said, shaking her head. "I don’t need your help, Damien." But as he smirked, his eyes darkened. “You never needed it before, but now? You don’t have a choice.” And as the door clicked shut behind him, Serena wondered if the real danger wasn't from her past—but from the man standing in front of her.
