The night air was heavy, charged with an energy Evelina could not name. She found the Alpha King in the courtyard, his body trembling, his eyes glowing like molten silver.
“Stay back,” he growled, voice raw, torn between man and beast.
Her feet refused to move. “You’re fighting it again, aren’t you? The wolf inside you.”
His breath came ragged, his claws threatening to pierce through his skin. “You don’t understand—he wants you. Not as a queen… not as a woman. As his mate.”
Her heart stilled. She stepped closer, though danger clung to every inch of the air. “Then let him speak. Let me see him, instead of the chains you’ve wrapped around yourself.”
His eyes widened, the beast within thrashing against the fragile control he held. “Evelina… if I let go, I won’t stop.”
She lifted her chin, defiance glowing in her eyes. “Then don’t stop. Maybe it’s not your wolf that frightens me… but the man who hides behind him.”
With a shudder, his last restraint snapped. The wolf surged forward, a terrifying, magnificent force.
And yet, in Evelina’s gaze, there was no fear—only the dangerous spark of rebellion that welcomed him.
