Chapter 6: Cracks in the Pack

1623 Words
The forest was cloaked in darkness as Elara and Finn moved toward the old oak by the river, the moonlight barely piercing the thick canopy above. The air was cold, heavy with the scent of damp earth, the distant rush of the river a soft hum that did little to ease the tension in Elara’s chest. She’d left Lian with a trusted villager, but the separation weighed on her like a stone, her heart aching with every step. She couldn’t bring him into this danger—not when the wolves they hunted would show no mercy. Lian was her world, her reason for fighting, and the thought of him alone, vulnerable, made her heart clench with a fear she could barely contain. They crouched behind a thicket, the underbrush prickling at Elara’s skin through her jacket. Finn’s voice was a low whisper, his blue eyes sharp with focus. “Serena’s meeting the Bloodmoon beta here. They’re finalizing their alliance tonight.” Elara nodded, her heart pounding, her fingers brushing the hilt of her dagger. If they caught Serena in the act, it would prove her betrayal and force Kade to act. But the risk was immense. If they were caught, there’d be no mercy. Her thoughts drifted to Lian, picturing his small form curled up, safe and warm, his golden eyes closed in sleep, his dark hair fanning across the pillow. She clung to that image, using it to anchor herself against the fear threatening to overwhelm her. She couldn’t fail him—not now, not ever. A twig snapped in the distance, sharp and deliberate. Serena stepped into the clearing, her blonde hair catching the moonlight, her movements predatory. A massive wolf followed—Bloodmoon’s beta, his scarred fur gray and black, red eyes glowing with cruelty. Elara’s stomach twisted, dread coiling in her gut, her breath catching in her throat. “You’re late,” Serena snapped, crossing her arms, her green eyes narrowing with impatience. “Had to make sure I wasn’t followed,” the beta growled, his voice a low rumble that sent a chill through Elara. “Your Alpha’s been sniffing around.” Serena smirked, her tone dripping with disdain. “Kade’s distracted. He’s chasing that runt and her child. He’s weak.” Elara’s fists clenched, anger surging through her like a wildfire. The words were a dagger to her heart, a reminder of Kade’s betrayal, the years she’d spent running to protect Lian. She wanted to lunge, to make Serena pay for speaking of her son that way, but Finn’s hand on her arm kept her still, his steady gaze urging her to wait, his blue eyes a calming force in the storm of her emotions. “What’s the plan?” the beta asked, his red eyes glinting with hunger, a predator eager for the hunt. “Next full moon,” Serena said, her voice low and cold, each word a promise of bloodshed. “We take out Kade while the pack’s gathered. I claim Silverfang. You get the eastern territories. The child dies—no loose ends.” Rage surged through Elara, her wolf clawing at the surface, desperate to protect her son. The thought of Lian—small, innocent, defenseless—being hunted by these monsters filled her with a primal fury, a mother’s wrath that burned hotter than any fire. Finn’s grip tightened, holding her back, his fingers digging into her arm, a silent plea to wait just a little longer. Serena handed the beta a small vial, its green liquid glowing faintly, casting eerie shadows on her face. “Wolfsbane. Slip it into Kade’s drink.” The beta grinned, tucking it away, his red eyes gleaming with anticipation, a predator savoring the hunt to come. Elara’s patience snapped, her rage boiling over. She nodded to Finn, and they burst from the thicket, confronting the traitors head-on, their movements swift and coordinated. “You!” Serena spat, her eyes blazing with fury, her green eyes locking on Elara with murderous intent. “How dare you!” “We heard everything,” Elara snapped, drawing her dagger, its blade glinting in the moonlight, sharp and ready. “The pack will know what you’ve done.” The beta shifted into his wolf form in a blur of motion, lunging at Finn with a snarl, his red eyes glowing with savage light. Finn was faster, tackling him to the ground, their fight a brutal clash of claws and fangs. Blood sprayed as Finn’s claws raked the beta’s side, drawing a deep gash that elicited a howl of pain, the sound echoing through the forest. The beta retaliated, his jaws snapping dangerously close to Finn’s throat, his teeth grazing Finn’s fur, a near miss that sent a jolt of fear through Elara, her heart seizing as she watched her friend fight for his life. Serena shifted too, her blonde wolf form charging at Elara with a snarl, her eyes glowing with vicious intent. Elara shifted, her dark fur blending with the shadows as she met Serena’s attack head-on, her green eyes blazing with determination. They collided in a frenzy of claws and teeth, the ground churning into mud beneath them, the air thick with the scent of blood and fury. Serena’s claws raked Elara’s flank, the pain searing, a burning line of fire that drew a yelp as Elara stumbled, her vision blurring for a moment. But she fought back, fueled by desperation, by the need to protect Lian, by the love that burned brighter than any pain. She ducked under Serena’s next strike, her body low to the ground, and lunged forward, sinking her teeth into Serena’s shoulder, tasting blood, the coppery tang sharp on her tongue. Serena howled, staggering back, her blonde fur matted with blood, and Elara pressed the advantage, pinning her to the ground with a snarl, her weight holding the she-wolf down. “Give up,” Elara growled, her voice distorted by her wolf form, her green eyes blazing with fury. “It’s over.” “Never,” Serena spat, bucking wildly, her claws scrabbling at the ground in a desperate attempt to break free. “You’ll never be Luna. You’re nothing.” “I don’t want to be Luna,” Elara said fiercely, her words a declaration of her true purpose. “I want my son safe. And you’re a threat to that.” A deep howl cut through the air—Kade’s howl, commanding and fierce, reverberating through the trees like a call to war. The patrol had arrived, their pawsteps thundering through the forest, a storm of fur and fury descending on the clearing. Serena’s face paled, panic setting in as she struggled harder, her green eyes wide with fear. Kade burst into the clearing, his golden eyes blazing with fury, shifting back to human form, his presence a force of nature that silenced the forest. The pack followed, their expressions a mix of shock and betrayal as they took in the scene—Serena pinned beneath Elara, the Bloodmoon beta bleeding on the ground, Finn standing over him, snarling. “What is this?” Kade demanded, his voice booming, a thunderclap that shook the trees, his golden eyes narrowing with rage. Elara shifted back, trembling, her flank bleeding, her breath ragged from the fight. “Serena’s plotting with Bloodmoon,” she said, pointing to the vial on the ground, its green glow a damning piece of evidence. “She planned to poison you, to take over the pack.” Kade’s gaze flicked to the vial, then to Serena, his face darkening with rage, his fists clenching at his sides. “Is this true?” he growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. Serena shifted back, her blonde hair matted with sweat and blood, her face pale but defiant, her hands trembling as she pushed herself up on her elbows. “I did it for the pack,” she said, her voice shaking with desperation. “You’re weak, Kade, obsessed with her and that abomination. I was saving us.” “You betrayed us,” Kade snarled, each word a condemnation, his golden eyes glowing with fury. “You betrayed me.” He turned to the pack, his tone cold and final. “Take her. She’ll face judgment at dawn.” The wolves surged forward, binding Serena with silver chains that burned her skin, her screams echoing through the forest as they dragged her away, the pack’s loyalty to Kade reaffirmed in the face of her treachery. Kade approached Elara, his expression unreadable, a storm of emotions swirling in his golden eyes, his broad shoulders tense with the weight of what had just happened. “You saved the pack,” he said quietly, his voice low, a mix of gratitude and something deeper, a flicker of the bond they’d once shared. Elara met his gaze, her heart still pounding, her body aching but her resolve firm. “I did it for Lian,” she replied, her voice steady despite her exhaustion. “For our son.” Kade’s eyes softened, a flicker of warmth breaking through the storm, his features softening as he looked at her. “Thank you,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I won’t forget this.” But as the pack dispersed, their footsteps fading into the forest, Elara knew the battle wasn’t over. Serena’s allies still lurked in the shadows, and Bloodmoon would seek revenge. The war had just begun, and Elara wasn’t sure if they’d survive it. She glanced at Finn, his expression grim but resolute, his blue eyes meeting hers with a silent promise of solidarity. They’d won this battle, but the road ahead was dark, and they’d have to walk it together.
